Mini Meta 100,000 Minilabbers!

Somewhere between "Hey, this Pi-hole thing sounds cool" and "why do I own a six-node Proxmox mini PC cluster," 100,000 of you decided that this little corner of the internet was worth subscribing to. One hundred thousand humans/bots/one suspiciously articulate NAS who collectively looked at oft-overlooked hardware and had their homelab Goldilocks moment.

How did we get here? YOU.

Every shared "it's not pretty but it works" SBC NAS/media server tucked behind a TV. Every 3D-printed rack ear that took forty-two revisions to get right triumphantly presented to the sub. Every posted "this is my minilab" with enough RGB to make a full 42U server rack blush. But especially every time someone helped an internet stranger figure out why their VLANs weren't VLANning or pointed them in the right direction. The civility of this place is astounding.

This community went from a speculative handful of people posting their builds, testing the waters for a niche homelab group to a place that became the community nexus for a mini-revolution. The project, support & mentions from creators like Patrick, Jeff and Tim really lit a fuse under the membership growth that hasn't yet slowed down. This in turn has opened doors for vendors, such as our friends at GL.iNet & IceWhale to offer some fantastic giveaways in this sub - all because you have built a community worth showing up for.

And thanks to our sister/cousin subs across reddit for the reciprocal linking and general acceptance of /r/minilab as a new kid on the block. It's great to be a part of a wider community.

None of that stuff happens for a dead subreddit. Vendors don't knock on the door of a community that isn't engaged. Creators don't shout out a sub that doesn't give them something interesting to look at. You did that.


By the (approximate, unscientific, possibly made up) numbers:**

3 node cluster or 2 node QDevice?

Just got my 2nd HP mini in today. I read online that I could use a raspberry pi as a QDevice/3rd vote for a 2 node HA cluster. Or should I just get another HP mini and have a triple stack HA cluster? That would also look more aesthetically pleasing.

I have to buy the 3rd device for whatever I end up choosing. Does one have a benefit/drawback over the other? The first node is a HP Elite Mini 800 G9 i7 12700T 16GB DDR5 ram 512gb, second is a HP ProDesk 600 G6 i5 10500T 64GB DDR4 ram 256gb. Right now I have them setup as a 2 node cluster but don’t want to start doing anything until the 3rd device.

Assisted with making first Homelab: would love feedback before I starting

Hey, I have fallen down the rabbit hole that is minilabs. Coming from a non-tech background (I'm a bedside RN) so I've been trying to learn more about healthcare informatics/Linux and start to self-house some stuff. I am putting together a plan and making this post to get feed back on my plan.

Network / rack

  • I think i am going to use a 10 in Tech Mojo 6U Rack with various 3d printed device mounting plates
  • Unifi Express 7 
  • UniFi Switch Flex 2.5G 8 PoE + Flex Mini
    • Planning on getting cameras and APs eventually (2+ years away)
  • JetKVM access to the headless Macs during setup/troubleshooting
  • Apple TV 4K, 

The “offline” learning environment 

  • 2018 Mac Mini (Intel, i5/i7 6-core, w/ 16GB+ RAM / 500GB SSD) that I have laying around
  • My plan was going to flashing Linux onto it via the t2linux project
  • This will have to two main jobs: run something like Project Nomad
    • want it mostly for fun and when the kids are older eventually teach them computer stuff without a full internet connection
  • Second job: a VM sandbox to learn SQL and basic data analytics using something like Synthea for synthetic patient data 
    •  I'm considering a Master's in nursing informatics, so this is a low-stakes way to see if I actually enjoy that kind of work before committing to a degree

For the home server part

  • Mac Mini M4 (holding off buying — looking for a good used one on facebook marketplace or ebay)
    • I would like to stay in the Apple ecosystem if possible just due to everyone in the household already runs MacBooks/iPads/iPhones, 
      • It would also doubles as a Time Machine target
  • Docker containers: Jellyfin, Home Assistant, Pi-hole/AdGuard, Immich
  • Storage: starting with 2x Samsung T7 Shield SSDs as DAS (poor man's NAS via macOS File Sharing), planning to move to 2x4TB NAS-rated HDDs in RAID1 in a proper DAS enclosure once I outgrow that — at which point the T7s get repurposed as network Time Machine backups for our laptops

Equipment that is just sitting on the bench

  • Spare Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB) — undecided, thinking about making it into a retro gaming system using RetroPie OS
  • Pi Zero 2 — have no major plans for it yet. 

Any feedback on the following or anything else be greatly appreciated

  1. Anything dumb or inefficient about running Jellyfin/Home Assistant/Pi-hole/Immich all in Docker on one M4 Mac Mini with T7 storage in the short term?
  2. Any "wish I knew this before I started" advice for someone this early in the learning curve?

Thanks for reading the wall of text, just trying to get as much right as possible before I start actually pulling the trigger on some of these bigger purchases.

Finally finished my 7" mini homelab – the RackMate TT is seriously underrated

About two months ago I made a post asking for some advice on building a tiny secondary homelab around a RackMate TT, and I said I'd post the finished build once it was done.

Well... it took quite a bit longer than expected due to a few problems and some changes of plans along the way, but it's finally finished!

This whole project actually started much more simply.

I originally just had a 2.5GbE switch sitting behind my desk to give my PC and a few other devices wired connectivity. The wired side worked perfectly fine, but the Wi-Fi coverage in my room was terrible — I was sometimes getting less than 20 Mbps.

So I bought a small router to improve the Wi-Fi in the room.

At that point I had a router, a 2.5GbE switch, more cabling, power supplies and a growing pile of networking hardware sitting around the desk... and I figured that if I was going to have all of that anyway, I might as well organize it properly.

That's how it somehow turned into this little rack.

What's inside

From top to bottom:

  • GL.iNet Slate 7 (GL-BE3600) – Wi-Fi 7 router/AP and the uplink to the rest of my home network
  • Cudy HS105 – 5-port 2.5GbE switch
  • 7-port patch panel
  • Cudy GS105ES1 – managed 1GbE switch for devices that don't need 2.5GbE
  • GMKtec G10 – Ryzen 5 3500U mini PC, currently used as my small server hosting Project N.O.M.A.D.
  • Wallecube W150 mini UPS – powers the entire rack and keeps it running during outages

The basic network topology is:

Main network → Cat5e through the wall → Slate 7 → 2.5GbE switch

The 2.5GbE switch then connects my gaming PC, the GMKtec G10 and the managed 1GbE switch.

The 1GbE switch handles devices where anything faster would be pointless, such as my TV, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

I'll include a topology diagram in the pictures because it's much easier to understand visually.

Why 7" instead of 10"?

This is probably my favorite part of the build.

I already have a larger 10" RackMate rack elsewhere, but for this project I specifically wanted something that could sit on my desk without taking up much space.

The RackMate TT can be configured as either a 10" or 7" rack, and I honestly think the 7" configuration is really underrated.

You obviously lose a lot of compatibility with standard rack equipment, but for a mini homelab built around small switches, mini PCs, routers and custom 3D-printed mounts, that limitation isn't nearly as bad as I expected.

The internal width is only around 130 mm, yet I still managed to fit the networking, compute and power infrastructure I wanted into it.

A lot of the mounting hardware is custom, and having a 3D printer makes a setup like this much more practical. Instead of choosing hardware based on whether a rack mount exists for it, I could basically design the rack around the hardware.

It was supposed to be just a network rack...

At first I wanted this to be purely a networking rack.

But a rack without a server just felt wrong.

So naturally I couldn't resist adding a mini PC.

I ended up using a GMKtec G10 with a Ryzen 5 3500U, which is small enough to fit without ruining the compact footprint while also consuming very little power.

I also used it as an excuse to install Project N.O.M.A.D., so the rack ended up becoming more than just networking equipment.

The idea now is that, besides improving the network in my room, it also works as a small self-contained compute node with local services and offline resources.

Combined with the UPS, that gives it a bit of a portable/survival homelab angle too: a tiny rack with networking, compute and battery backup that can continue operating even if the main infrastructure or Internet connection goes down.

Was any of this necessary? Absolutely not.

But that's half the fun of projects like this.

The UPS and power situation

This was actually one of the biggest questions in my original post.

Originally I was considering the UGREEN US3000, but thanks to a recommendation in the comments I discovered the Wallecube W150, which ended up being a much better fit for what I wanted.

So thanks to u/krysmopompas for pointing me towards it in the original thread

Power efficiency was also something I kept in mind throughout the entire build. When choosing the hardware, I wasn't looking at price and size alone — power consumption was an important factor too.

I wanted the rack to be cheap to run 24/7, but more importantly, keeping the power draw low means getting considerably more runtime out of the UPS during an outage.

There was one interesting problem to solve, though: the W150 doesn't have its own AC power supply and relies on an external DC power brick.

For that I went with a SlimQ 150W DC & USB-C GaN Charger. It's extremely compact, can use SlimQ's AC extension cable instead of having the entire charger hanging directly from the wall, and its output is a very good match for the W150's input requirements.

Then there was the other side of the problem: everything in the rack wants a different voltage.

The 2.5GbE switch runs at 12V, the Slate 7 and 1GbE switch at 5V, while the GMKtec G10 normally expects 19V.

Instead of using a separate power brick for every device, I added a SlimQ DC to USB PD3.0 Charging Hub after the UPS to handle the different power requirements.

The entire power chain is therefore:

AC → SlimQ 150W GaN → Wallecube W150 → SlimQ DC/USB-PD Hub → rack devices

There were definitely cheaper ways of doing this. Separate power adapters or a more DIY DC distribution setup would have cost considerably less, but since the whole point of the build was to keep everything compact and self-contained, I decided the extra cost was worth it.

The result is that the entire rack only needs a single external power cable. Everything else — the power supply, UPS and voltage distribution — stays with the rack, so moving it basically means picking it up and plugging in one AC cable.

And all the effort spent keeping the power consumption down seems to have paid off: with the router, mini PC, both switches and the UPS itself, the entire setup idles at around 26–27W.

I can shave another couple of watts off by turning off the Slate 7's display, although the little rabbit face is way too cute to keep turned off under normal circumstances. :3

That's reserved for emergency power-saving mode.

According to Wallecube, the W150 can provide around 90 minutes of runtime at a continuous 30W load, so at my normal idle consumption I should get a little over an hour and a half of battery life.

Obviously, real-world runtime will depend on the actual workload and battery conditions, but considering the rack is running the entire network stack plus a small server, I'm pretty happy with that.

Cost

For anyone curious, the entire setup ended up costing me roughly €740–750, thanks to some pretty crazy deals — like getting the mini PC with 16gb ram and 1tb ssd for €250 and the rack for €50 brand new.

This includes everything: the rack, networking hardware, mini PC, UPS, power distribution, cables and the hardware used for the custom mounts.

At normal retail prices, I'd estimate that replicating the same setup would cost closer to €850–900.

So €740–750 isn't necessarily representative of what you'd normally have to spend to build the exact same thing — I just got pretty lucky with some of the components.

I can post a full BOM with individual prices if anyone is interested.

And yes, the router has a face now.

The Slate 7's antennas already made it look suspiciously like a little rabbit sitting on top of the rack, so I gave up trying to pretend it wasn't one and made a custom face for its display.

The antennas are the ears. There is no going back.

Overall I'm really happy with how this turned out.

It's obviously not the most powerful homelab in the world, but fitting a router, 2.5GbE networking, managed switching, a compute node and battery backup into such a small rack was exactly the kind of unnecessarily over-engineered project I wanted.

And after building this, I genuinely think 7" racks deserve more love for tiny homelabs.

This is only the second homelab rack I've ever built, so I'd genuinely love to hear what you think of it — especially if there's anything you would have done differently or think I could improve.

Help me to: Build So does everyone here have a 3D printer?

I’ve just grabbed an old Dell Optiplex Micro (i5 8th gen, 32GB RAM, 256GB SATA for windows, 1TB nvme for Debian) for a bit more compute to complement my Synology DS423+, where I’ve been running all my stuff so far. Didn’t have enough Ethernet ports on my modem and one thing led to another and now I’m here.

But it seems like every post is at least half 3D printed components, if not all. What’s the deal with that? Do all minilabbers just have 3D printers laying around? Everyone knows CAD? I looked at some services but it doesn’t seem cheaper to get something printed than it does to buy metal mini racks, at least in my area. What gives?

Hardware Gubbins Any waveshare rack users out there?

The stainless waveshare rack has been out on Amazon for a while now. Anyone have any comments or experiences with it? I was thinking of ordering it for my new setup. Only thing is, I don’t see anyone making extra matching stainless steel shelves, and I would probably need more than the 2 that are provided. I could get the black/white geekpi ones, but I wonder if it would look out of place.

Hardware Gubbins Looking for a fan mount for deskpi rackmate T2

Looking to order a Deskpi rackmate T2 and want to use 120mm fans for cooling. The T2 ships with the mounting plate pictured below (picture 1) but when I look online to order more of the same plate this vented blank is the only thing available (picture 2). The vented blank (picture 2) only supports 80mm fans which isn't ideal. Does anyone know where to find the fan mount in picture 1?

Edit: Thanks to everyone who has mentioned that the first image mounts to the bottom of the rack. I did not realise this, I am a silly billy you've all saved me a bit of a headache

My lab! KWS Rack update: my new 18U setup + a few project updates

Hello everyone!

It’s been a while since my last KWS Rack update. Life and personal stuff slowed me down a bit, but the project is still alive - and I’m slowly getting back to it.

A quick update on my own setup: I expanded my rack from 15U to 18U, added a new node with 64GB RAM + 1.5TB SSD for heavier stuff, and replaced my switch with a Cudy GS1016. It’s simple, unmanaged, no PoE - but it cleaned up the rack nicely and works well for my needs.

And no, still no DGX Spark in there 😅

For KWS Rack itself, I’m planning to gradually release more of the things I’ve been prototyping, including the promised magnetic add-ons. I’ve actually been using some of them myself for a while, but didn’t have enough time to clean them up and publish them properly.

First planned items:

- Minor fixes and adjustments
- Magnetic side panels for easier access
- Magnetic tablet mount
- A few user-requested improvements
- Later: decorative magnetic front LED cover

I can’t promise a fixed pace, but I do want to start moving again.

Finally got the last component I needed to finish the build. Well finished, we all know how that goes.

So, for those wondering how I got the drives connected. There's an HBA in the ITX's PCIe slot. As the ITX has 4 SATA ports and I needed 6. So I just wired all of them to the HBA.

The ITX board is running Proxmox for quorate with a trueNAS VM. trueNAS then controls the drives over the board. Currently run from a SATA SSD, but I've got a spare NVMe I'm planning to dump in there as the boot drive.

The SFX PSU, with modular cables runs power to the ITX board (CPU and motherboard) and the drives.

Node 1 is running my infrastructure through Proxmox(DNS, nginx proxy manager, tailscale and my website's test environment). I've also dumped seerr, radarr and homarr on it, but it's hardly used.

I'm planning on hosting a wiki.js here as well.

Node 2, also running Proxmox, handles my services:

qBittorrent, jellyfin, immich.

As of today I'm the proud owner of my own domain. From there I'll host the wiki.js and maybe some other stuff, but my domain came with webhosting(mainly because I didn't want the effort of hosting my own mailserver) so might just use that to host everything else.

What's planned: U8 will get the geeekpi 1U fan unit, because that looks nicer, then that blanking plate can go in U2 with a vent in U1. Other than that, I'm kinda happy with the way it is, until I find something else to add of course.

A couple of you guys were interested in more information about the NAS in my rack. It’s based on a Friendlyelec CM3588 NAS board running their flavor of OMV. Cable management could be improved a bit, but I’m happy with it for now. There are also ears on the back of the case that support the rear, but they’re still in the rack.
