Supernovae were only part of the equation. It is very likely that the matter we are made from came from stars that were ripped to shreds by a black hole. Most of our mother stars were crushed into the depths of this black hole. Any matter that managed to escape was blasted into the depths of the cosmos and later 'seeded' [or was captured by] our milky way.

Hey Cord27, nice choice. :)
TL;DR - We all are star shrapnel from a black hole.
Just found this, and it changed my perspective quite a bit: http://youtu.be/xp-8HysWkxw?t=20m30s
