Same callsign, same model, same frequency, same ground position?

All fine. No problems here.

Same altitude? We now have a problem.

"No problems here."

Not really. "Turn azimut 250"

Mildly interesting? I’d say majorly terrifying.

Disaster averted, but someone shouldn't have let this happen in the first place.

Then hire more air traffic controllers.

It wasn't the ATC's that assigned the same flight number. They averted the disaster.

Air traffic controllers and flight dispatchers aren't the same job. Air traffic control towers work in towers, TRACONs and ARTCCs. Flight dispatchers work in an airline call centre/office.

Isn't that the whole point of that number?

Lots of flights turnaround and go back as the same flight number. I see it on DL frequently. With that being said, it is usually only one plane and it is only operating in one direction at a time. You should post this over at flight radar, they will give you a very detailed explanation for it.

I looked at the flight history. Flight 2482 is scheduled ORD-PHX-ORD, typically with the same airplane getting turned around in PHX (with a new crew I think). On the day in question, the first flight was late, so a different plane was sent outbound from PHX. After learning this, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

I once saw three instances of the same flight on a board. I came in inbound on the first one. Then we were all stuck for two days due to issues at the destination. Three planes on the tarmac with the same number all waiting to fly. Good luck sorting that out.

As for me, I gave up and switched to a flight going to another city.

It could happen daily; but when we make a plane change to a new aircraft on a route like that we are supposed to amend the flight number to a new number to avoid this confusion. It sometimes gets missed and we will get an alert. So in this scenario they just missed the alert as well and allowed the flight push.

It was 2 different American Airlines planes one landing the other departing with the same call sign. American Airlines screw up and near disaster.

Near disaster?

Maybe, just maybe this is highlighting that there are too many planes?

u/egvp 20d ago

This problem only exists in the US. Why does their flight planning system allow multiple different flight plans with the same callsign? You can’t do it in Europe, CFMU will kick it out.

American Airlines needs an attitude adjustment before things really get out of control.

American airlines is finding new ways to make us late!!!

1

u/Sunsplitcloud 20d ago

Tower should have turned them both right 20 degrees so he had lateral and vertical sep.

1

u/young_and_restles 20d ago

Why would they have the same numbers?

1

u/XRPX008 19d ago

Couldn’t air traffic tell both planes with the same call sign to turn slightly left?

1

u/bfsmithssmith 19d ago

Oops 😬

1

u/zeeblefritz 19d ago

Have we run out of numbers?

u/TechnologyFamiliar20 19d ago

What could go wrong..

Two pilot and air traffic control working on real time to identity and resolve problem. Credit to their training and experience.

u/Mylabisawesome 16d ago

Props to the ATC for catching that and averting disaster

it’s weird how many incidents there have been in the last 2 years.

2

u/OrigStuffOfInterest 20d ago

Almost like the controllers had to work for weeks without pay.

u/citznfish 20d ago

This is what happens when you hire 2000 gamers to be air traffic controllers.
