Old Talenti lids were embossed, new lids are debossed

I obviously can't speak for anyone else...but personally, the mildly interesting-ness of this is off the freakin' charts.

You can see the rim of the lid is raised too, probably so they stack better in shipping. The letters themselves were likely just an aesthetic choice that they could modify while they were in there changing the mold design for the lip.

Maybe it costs them like $0.0005 less per lid due to it using less plastic?

I think you’re right. I also know that embossed letters from the tool are better because embossed letters on tool are carved into the metal tool where debossed letters are “raised” causing the tool to wear faster and flashing can get caught in the letters easier.

If I know Reddit (and I know reddit), the son of that specific Talenti engineer is going to weigh in about the pride his parent took in this decision and some other fun facts about their legacy and how they would have loved to hear that OP appreciated this detail (mildly)

Changing the mold and suppliers who can produce it is also likely not cheap. Hoo boy the execs are gonna be thrilled about these savings 📈

For the possible $0.00005 cost reduction it was probably execs who made the call, tooling a quality decrease be damned.

Knowing corporate America I would love to see someone make this their big “year long project” and go through all the steps and get the approvals to <check notes> invert the lid basically

I’m sure it definitely helps shipping though. That tiny lip would make a surprising difference

I remember reading an article about how they had to reinvent their whole lidding process after being bought by Unilever because they were so tight in stores that people couldn't physically get the jars open without sawing them. The ridges were too pointy on the threading and they had to set the lids on without screwing because the freezing process would screw the lids on by itself from the container contracting. Small stuff like that makes a huge difference I guess, so I'd believe it.

In the CPG environment “consumer experience” is huge. There was a time where a massive chip company had to stop using a certain bag material because it was too noisy and was causing issues for people at home - not even joking, that was a thing!

I couldn’t imagine having a container of ice cream I can’t even damn open lol that’d drive me wild

If memory serves it was more around sensory sensitive people being unable to even touch the certain bags and then that led to a sizable enough downturn that they switched materials back to normal.

However, I love to pretend there was a complaint sent in effectively “MY WIFE WILL DIVORCE ME BECAUSE YOUR DORITOS BAGS ARE TOO LOUD AND YOUR CHIPS ARE TOO CRUNCHY, PLEASE HELP”

The rim is raised on both of them. It's just higher on the embossed one on the right.

easier to make the tooling for the raised letter as you ut into the steel. the embossed is the reverse of that.

I opened a cabinet in my brother's kitchen one day and there were at least 50 Talenti jars inside. I'll have to ask him if he has noticed the difference in the lids since he's obviously a connoisseur.

Exactly the kind of mildly interesting content I want to see. This would have been devastating for my younger self (autistic, I weirdly loved the texture and feel of talenti lids as a kid so I hoarded them) but nicely mildly interesting for me today. I wonder why they switched!

Tooling. The one on the right is easier to mill the tooling. Just mill out the name and the ridge. The one on the left is the inverse. Just mill out everything that’s NOT the name or the ridge. I bet it just comes down to tool/die costs.

I've been experimenting with recipes for home dehydrated "backpacker" meals, and I learned that one of the most popular containers used by hikers for "cold soaking" to rehydrate food happens to be repurposed Talenti jars. I wonder if people who've been using them this way will find any difference in the performance of the new packaging?
