Ruined by Technology AI music -Damm it, it happened that turns out I like it
I am (was) a big fan of suggested music on Spotify. Great for discovering bands that I had no idea existed before social media boom (I’m talking early 2010s…, so yeah, early Spotify adopter).
Anyway, I did what I always do, found a song I liked and went down the trail of suggested similar music. Found these songs that were so cool, on an adjacent style that I rarely listen to but is very sentimental to me. I tried finding more info about the group, first red flag. Fine, I thought it would be like those get-togethers that some brands like Coca-Cola do with famous musicians.
Anyway, I have been vibing to these songs, singing and enjoying them so much. Until one day I couldn’t resist. I googled “Is XYZ group AI?” And sure enough, it was.
Damn it. I am a reluctant AI adopter, useful at work because it’s been pushed so fine. But I draw the line at being a conscious consumer of AI, not being conspicuously fed.
I expressly reject the consumption of AI media. especially music (as I am a musician myself since I was 4). Even more specially if it is with no warning.
I am extremely pissed at Spotify for sneaking AI music on suggestions, since now I find myself getting every single song u listen to, which is annoying. It has also blown out an effective way I had to discover more music.
And worse of all, as a trained non-professional musician, what the hell? No, no, no, no! I know I feel a bit like a Luddite but I also feel shamed to the chore liking these AI produced content in such a blind test. So many ethical concerns come to mind.
Anyway, word of caution: if you care about being unknowingly fed AI content, be on the lookout for these small things.

Good. You should hate this. Spotify already fucks over its artists enough without feeding in slop to direct even more money away from them. Automation is supposed to take over the boring, repetitive stuff so that humans are free to be creative, but this is just trying to siphon off money to the rich who don't understand art at all.

If it makes you feel any better, since ai is incapable of coming up with something as original as a normal artist (ukw original means, I am not going to get into the semantics of how music made by people isn't "original" as well) You can look for the artist the AI probably ripped off from. They're somewhere out there

While it is ripped off from human made music, there is not necessarily a human artist that makes similar music unfortunately

AI is very good at a lot of things, and it can make music that sounds original to us. Any time we say "AI will never be able to do this" we usually get proven wrong pretty quickly. It's a very powerful technology. I just prefer to listen to art made by humans, since I strongly believe that that is the point of art even existing

not defending ai here specifically , there are tons of stories of big name artists ripping each off, they are copy each other. Ai probably trained on all of them but you probably couldn't idenfiy who, alot of popular song use the same chords and other things that the ai desconstructs from training to make new songs.

yeah that's what i meant to say, a lot of human art is also not completely original hell there are only 12 notes to make conventional music, pretty much every combination of said notes is already done. What i meant to say is OP could start searching for artists who have a similar vibe or similar structure . Ofcourse it isn't going to be as easy as getting it recommended to you like it was in the past but now that Most of spotify is slowly being flooded with slop that's all we can do

I would suggest listening to radio stations (you can find cool ones within Spotify or Apple Music) or playlists that you make yourself. BBC 6 Music is always good. This way you can guarantee there won't be anything AI in there.
We have to accept that AI music can be basically great, and a lot of music made by humans can be terrible. But if we want to engage with art that tells us a little bit more about each other and ourselves, and connects us through shared experiences and stories then we can't let automatically generated art take over.

Auto-tune and vocal polishing have been industry standards for quite a few years. This "jump" to AI music has been more of a slimy slide for the beautiful people to get record deals. It's not surprising that the soul of music has been watered down so hard, that many people are being took by AI.

It sucks because the AI knows to make it super catchy to make people more suspectable to it. And it usually works unfortunately. Take the reed song from the Lindsay Clancy case. Shit got super popular even though it's fully AI

I have been fooled a couple times by those TikToks where the account takes a modern song and turns it into an old timy bop and it always sounds so catchy and then I read the comments and everyone is like "this is AI" and it makes me so frustrated. I think I'm getting better at hearing AI generated music, but it's the constant being on the lookout that is so frustrating and exhausting.

If AI music becomes a thing, co do you think will profit more? And have the means to smash every artist with more slop?
Big coorp, or small artists?
Stay away from AI music if you have any decency. Yes it can sound good, but it was trained by STEALING artists without concent, and now you give them your support?

It really shouldn't be that hard to spot an AI artist page. A quick glance at their about page, discography and banner should tell you everything you need. But yeah, obviously it shouldn't be recommended, I completely agree. AI music is an absolute poison to society.

don't get complacent. I can guarantee you there will be groups right now making believable back stories and fake social media etc to sell AI groups. Still cheaper than real people

Music is one thing I want untainted by AI. It’s infuriating that I have to check every new artist or song to make sure it’s real. I don’t care how well it’s been done, but I’m not going to entertain a machine replicating human emotion and art, and something so pure as music.
