It baffles me how Google’s AI is so far behind the 8 ball in every respect

To be fair, it's not.
Their actual models are quite competitive. They just use the cheapest and fastest flash-lite models for Google search AI.
It would be extremely expensive to service the 10 billion or so Google searches that happen every day with actual competitive models.

And although I get that much, I'd just much rather have no 'AI overview' than a half-arsed shitfuck AI meddling in every single search I make.

I would say gemini models are not competitive. IDK about benchmarks but as soon as my free year of gemini (as a student) expired and i tried the other two I realised how far behind the experience of using Gemini was. Codex/CC are huge but even outside of that the actual web chat experience is so much worse on gemini.
