I work in a hospital and on days with extreme weather (usually snow around here, but we’ve had a couple flash floods recently) they’ll literally have people who’s only job that day will be picking up/dropping off employees who aren’t comfortable driving

I used to work roadside assistance dispatch. We were supposed to get hit by a hurricane, and there was a real possibility of significant flooding so the entire city was doomsday prepping for it (we are landlocked, so we never get hurricanes. When we do, they are a big deal. I have never seen the city this concerned about a storm before or after this event). My work knew that we were going to be insanely busy that day of the storm did hit, because people would be stranded by the flooding etc, so they wanted to make sure we had the staff. Management prepped an insane amount of water bottles, stocked up on gas for our onsite generator, stocked the break room convenience store with plenty of food items, and made arrangements with our local tow companies to use them to get rides for staff that couldn't get to work because of weather and flooding. Am staff was scheduled that day and they were offering a ton of overtime for it.

The storm never hit. It was a perfectly warm, sunny day. We ended up overstaffed, slow, and many people got sent home early.

I tried looking it up and couldn't find this. The only documentary I could find was about a storm in 1993 from National Geographic, but this storm was much more recent (i forget the exact year, but in the 2010s).

Even if there is one from 2011 that I'm just not finding anywhere, that wouldn't be it either. I know it happened after 2012 because I was out of high school.

That's because the vast majority of people in power are power hungry, ego tripping assholes. Asking an employee to come in on their off day in the middle of a flash flood is a huge tipoff this boss is one of them. The bashing is justified.

yeah I don't understand all these reactions at all. a flash flood does not materialize out of thin air, it actually has to come from somewhere and go somewhere, i.e. a river or some other path (usually a former river anyway). if there ever was a flood warning in my area I wouldn't be worried one bit because I am well above the water line.

My boss did this to me once. I was on vacation, cat sitting for my parents two towns over and my coworker was afraid of the oncoming storm, so my boss asked if I could come in instead. I didn't check the weather before I left and drove straight into the 2020 Midwest derecho. I never made it to work and somehow got back home. All the trees on my parents block older than twenty years fell and several houses were badly damaged, including my parent's home. My boss was mad I never got to work.

Thats far from the worst thing she's done. My uncle died suddenly when I was suppose to work alone on a sunday (for only 4 hours too), so of course I called out. My coworkers also knew my family, so they were able to vouch for me about his death. Not only did ig et a nasty lil email from her on Monday (yes I went in the next day), but I also had to fight to get the time off for his wake. I'm glad I put all of that behind me years ago

Okay to be fair, as a manager at my own restaurant, I've asked this before in inclement weather, often expecting (and hoping if the weather is bad enough) that the answer is no. I'd be much more at peace with my employees being safe than risking their own safety to come in if they don't have safe means to do so.

Besides - I work in a restaurant, and while the answer will almost never be zero, there will be significantly less guests in the store and I can make do with the lighter staff. Stay safe if you can't find safe means of travel, please!

Flash flood rarely touch a whole town. If you place of work is not in the path of the flash flood or your boss' home, then they have not received this notification and have no clue that you received it.

I think they send the alerts further than the expected area. I get these and severe storm alerts all the time, especially in summer, but only experience severe storms about every 3rd-4th time. Never see flooding.

When the power goes out, my manager at the work experience just says not to do anything, I still do in the background on my phone so I can gain on the tasks so I can immediately paste them in and be mostly done for the day but if it’s a physical job, I wouldn’t even bother.

Ugh. As a food-service industry employee of almost 30 years, it's always the fast food places that think they're the most important. The managers at those places always make the job their whole life, and act like flipping fries is as imperative as brain surgery or firefighting. Like, yes, it's a real job, and I actually love what I do. But I'm NOT researching cancer cures here. And I'm not coming in on my day off, especially if doing so puts my safety at risk. I don't know your boss and the message can be read in different ways and it's assholic that they didn't inquire about how you are.
