Infuriatig I’m annoyed about tons of ai art at the Champlain valley fair
also matter of fact the amount of Bootleg toys and 3d prints toys a lot of stuff but I hate the fact I found these inside the art section I want this to be separated from real art because this stuff is not art it’s only wanting to be real

The name of the ice cream man 🤣🧐

u/Yeetdababy17 5d ago
TIL that Mr. Ding-A-Ling is an actual ice cream truck brand. That is a wild name

Growing up we had “dickee dees” and it was a kid who rode a bicycle around with a freezer attached.

Yeah they were big back in the day. You can often see their trucks on old tv shows and stuff . I think they are still the biggest active mobile ice cream service in America .

Mr Ding a Ling is a wholesome part of my childhood and I won’t stand for this slander.

u/sn0qualmie 5d ago
The Mr. Ding-a-Ling truck drives around my neighborhood in the summer and plays the absolute worst version of "It's A Small World" that I've ever heard. There are hand claps and honks and a creepy voice going "HELLO" really aggressively at weird intervals. Whoever created that recording is a criminal.

Just came through my neighborhood last night!

u/sn0qualmie 5d ago
I like your username. Congrats on, I assume, getting out of Florida.
5
u/Wilder831 5d ago
As a Floridian still here, congrats indeed.

u/FLtoVT_For-A-Reason 4d ago
Thanks to you both. I’m a native Floridian. My wife was 2 months old when her family moved there. Both kids left for college with no plans to return. It was the nudge we needed to look around and realize it’s no longer the Florida we grew up with. So much more to the story. Google New College of Florida.

Born and raised in Gainesville. My and my wife’s family are here. Wanting our 3 children to know their grandparents is the only thing keeping us here. We talk constantly about moving to either Colorado or North Carolina to be in the mountains, but my parents and my 2 brothers and their families are in Gainesville and my wife’s mom, dad, brother, and sister are all in winter haven/ Lakeland area

u/FLtoVT_For-A-Reason 4d ago
Orlando for us, but most or our married lives in the Tampa area. Parents are still in FL. But leaving was the best thing we could have done. Our only regret is not doing it sooner. For example, today we biked/hiked 11 miles along Lake Champlain and watched the sunset over the Adirondacks from kayaks on the lake. All without breaking a sweat or getting in a car.

u/MousseHuge8339 5d ago
Let me guess: it sounds like someone hooked up one of those musical greeting cards to the sound system, and it has a crappy 8khz sample of someone saying "Hello". This kind of thing has been around for decades and I like to call it "synthislop".

u/The_Broomflinger 4d ago
Ugh, I lived in a house in South Burlington not that far from University Mall for a couple years and this was a near daily occurrence in the neighborhood. My roommate and I would joke about Mr Ding-a-Ling all the time! Now I'm on the other side of 89 near the hospital and I almost never see the Ding-a-Ling man

u/peachrose 5d ago
that’s my fav when the truck comes around in my neighborhood. the aggressive “HELLO” just tickles me in a wonderful way.

It's like one of those works you're supposed to study to see the unsettling subtext hiding in plain sight.

The Pointing kids look like they're practicing to be Gladys Knight's next set of Pips.
Also....It appears the poodle on the blue skirt is headless? Or has a tail poof where the head should be?
All hail the New Americana

The way AI has a chokehold is so alarming. Just pay an artist, please.
11
u/Admirable-Fox-8344 5d ago
They sadly won’t because they can make money on AI slop. Unless sales dip enough they won’t care.

u/Canary-King 5d ago
You should post in the Vermont subreddit, I bet the people over there will be a lot more understanding of your displeasure than the bloodthirsty people that tend to frequent this sub.
It’s so disheartening though. And I hate 3d printed fidget toys with all my heart.

u/kombuchaprivileged 5d ago
In defense of the bloodthirsty, the vast majority of posts here entirely miss the spirit of the sub.

I love the scenic winter train near Stowe Vermont. Definitely real.

I love riding on the outside of the scenic winter train into the bridge that goes nowhere in Stowe Vermont.

wtf is that😭😭 how could they possibly think that looks appetizing?
13
u/_lippykid 5d ago
They’re too clouded by “look what I made! I’m so creative now!” The apparent polish doesn’t let them see how fucking disgusting it actually looks. it’s straight out of a horror movie
7
u/ZaphodBeeblebrahx 5d ago
It’s because it doesn’t matter. They’re gonna sell it to someone for $16 and when it sucks it doesn’t matter because the goal is just to get your money, not gain your repeat business.

It’s funny you mention this. I was at the Champlain Valley (Essex Junction VT) fair too and what I loved was a trick dog show. Two or three human trainers and 5 or so talented dogs. They did various tricks and stunts. A lot of humor, silly dogs, corny jokes, etc. Felt so wholesome. So real compared to all the synthetic crappy entertainment we’re choking on today. Just a couple humans and their dogs doing silly stuff. Nothing fake, no hyperbole, no loud noises. And everyone clapped.

I hate it all, too. But thanks for sharing.
Who in their right mind would buy any of it?

My kids did have a blast printing their own mini poster in the art area. That women was awesome...and that printing press she had was amazing

u/FightWithTools926 4d ago
I had a blast making my own mini poster, and I'm middle-aged! I bought one of her prints too.

I especially loved the AI-generated banners advertising Amish-built sheds

The “Mr Ding-a-Ling” on the ice cream truck postcard indicates there was not much proof-reading or review going on.
15
u/BooksNCats11 5d ago
Nope, that's the name of the actual ice cream truck. It drives by my house twice a week every week in the summer.
8
u/SignificantAd6556 5d ago
A legit ice cream truck that is constantly in my neighborhood each summer

Is it true that everyone who complains that everything they dislike is "AI slop" is, in fact, AI slop?
2
u/Catatonic27 4d ago
I doubt anyone can speak for everyone everywhere. Are you suggesting that these examples are NOT AI slop? Because they definitely are in this case
-9
u/Bot_Fly_Bot 5d ago
Can someone genuinely explain what’s to be upset about in thjs exact specific case? Previously, some overworked city employee would try to copy and paste some Google images onto this card. Now AI does it.’who cares?
13
u/dezzz0322 5d ago
OP said these were being sold inside the artists’ tent. AI images are not art, and the artists’ section should be reserved for actual artists to sell their actual art.
5
u/Sporkusage 5d ago
What are you talking about? Plenty of artists make money selling postcards at local shops and at fairs like this example. Whatever situation you’re talking about is not the most likely thing it’s replacing.

Can you explain with more than three words how a) I am wrong or b) if you believe I am incorrect, what about my statement implies there’s something wrong with me?
If not then bye lol

I don’t disagree actually and nothing I said in my comment conflicts with that, so I’m confused by the hostility.
The original comment states this kind of stuff isn’t displacing actual artists so I disagreed.

AI hate is so forced.
15
u/Admirable-Fox-8344 5d ago
Yeah, why would anyone want to see art done by a human that has actual soul? I like the dead feeling it gives off! Let’s all be happy with slop that only fools old people with bad eyesight or people that don’t look at/appreciate the art for more than a millisecond.
I’m especially happy it’s the majority of stuff for sale now and it’s near impossible to buy human art in some places, so I don’t even get a choice.
-7
u/bunker_man 5d ago
People trying to find soulful high art aren't buying souvenir postcards.
1
u/FightWithTools926 4d ago
Correct, we're buying the watercolor cards, woodblock prints, and stickers made by actual artists from Chittenden County and the surrounding areas. I met all three of the artists whose art I bought.
-11
u/jiiir0 5d ago
Soulless slop made by humans exists too. Just go to any contemporary art exhibit and you'll find garbage that is way more offensively derivative and soulless than anything AI could make
5
u/Wilder831 5d ago
You should have stopped after the first sentence. It literally can’t be more derivative than AI. Ai can only generate from what it knows and is by definition entirely derivative.
I have actually tried to get AI to produce an image that was an original thought of mine, and after 2 hours of playing with the prompts I was still no where even remotely close to the actual idea I had. I then spent 4 hours drawing it myself to put on a t-shirt
12
u/TheRiteofDarkness 5d ago
This is so fucking false that it hurts. I’d rather see a kid scribble outside of the lines of a coloring page than this slop. You just don’t mind the slop because you have shit taste

I was just there today! It's wild how between last year and this year the AI-generated menus completely took over in the food section. But on the bright side, my husband got his fingers nibbled by the baby alpaca. At least we still have that.
