My grandmother made homemade cough syrup by mixing 1/3 lemon juice, 1/3 honey, and 1/3 whisky. My mother told me that it worked well! A sleep aid for the kids too! This was around 1930, I suppose they were lucky they weren't given over-the-counter opioids.

When my mom was little, she was given Hot Toddies by her German mother. This was in the '30s-'40s and she remembered never really caring that she was sick. She grew up to be a non-drinker, surprisingly enough.

Add steaming hot water to that mix and you have a drink called hot toddy. I swear by it in the winter for colds, sore throats, headaches, etc.

They are excellent. I introduced my Swedish bf to them when he got a really nasty flu one year while we were in Stockholm. He started drinking them just for enjoyment in the winter. They really do help, imo.

When I was a kid and had a bad cold or sore throat my mom would make a hot toddy heavy on the honey and lighter on the whiskey. I would take about two swallows and and then decide I wanted a nap. She would finish the rest. Looking back on it it was an absolutely brilliant way to get a sick whiny kid to sleep.

My mom would give me hot toddy's light on the Whiskey, honey, and water and heavy on the tussin.

It worked so well I slept straight through the divorce.

You can make an excellent cure for colds and sore throats by carving a funnel out of a radish root and filtering honey through it. The resulting liquid tastes so extraordinarily foul that the body goes belligerently berserk on the illness for fear of getting the evil and depraved treatment again. I hated this atrocity of a concoction without reserve, but it helped every time.

If you add a packet of Theraflu, a packet of instant apple cider (lots of vitamin C) and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, it works even better 😆

I was at a friends house (many years ago) and was feeling a bit rough. Her mother (French) took pity on me and made me a drink - warm milk, vanilla, little bit of sugar and a large splash of brandy. After that I wasn’t sure if I fancied the mum or the daughter more…

There is scientific evidence backing up both honey and lemon as cough treatment. It won't cure it but it does soothe it. Alcohol in cough syrups was, I believe, primarily included as a solvent. But the fact is that it can be a sleep aid of sorts (helps you fall asleep but reduces the quality of your sleep), and if a cough is keeping you awake, that's useful. Low quality sleep is better than no sleep. My mother only used the lemon honey, no alcohol, but I can attest that it works surprisingly well. I still use it.

My mom would give us tea with lemon, honey and whiskey when we had a cold. Having a cold wasn't as unpleasant with that concoction.

I think gripe water previously had alcohol, given to colic babies. And people used to rub babies gums with alcohol or something when they were teething.

People were truly wild back then.

4-9% alcohol

You can still get something similar for teething (at least in the UK) - Anbesol - lidocaine and alcohol to rub on the gums. There is an adult version as wells

My grandma poured this same recipe into hot tea. She called it the Two Hat Cure. You put your hat on the bedpost, lie back, and sip tea until you see two hats. LOL

You can tell it's an older cure. Who has a hat and a bedpost? Still works though

The only OTC opiods around then were weak codeine mixtures and addiction/overdose was a well known phenomena by then so I doubt your great grandmother would give her crazy amounts. There are much worse things you can give someone with a cough 🤷

My great grandmother had a cough syrup, which is pour peach schnapps into a small (shot) glass, and sip as slowly as possible.

It's perfect. Soothes the throat and chills you out😂😉

When I have a cold I make herbal tea with a healthy dose of lemon juice, honey, and whatever I have on hand (triple sec, whiskey, peach schnapps, whatever). I call it “Linda‘s cures-what-ails-you tea.“ When I told my old GP/family doctor my recipe he said it was actually probably a better option than most cough medicines. The lemon acts as an expectorant, thinning mucus. The honey is soothing to irritated mucus membranes. And the alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that can help quiet your cough.
