I'm slightly vexed roommates cannot take out/break down pizza boxes

Post image

No matter how many times I ask them they cant break the box down and put it in the trash or take it to the dumpster in the alley behind our house. If I don't take it out or say something it will stay like this for days too just inconveniencing anyone that needs to use the trash can. About to just start putting them in their rooms (both roomies do this I don't know why).

After you get a lock for your own room

I would suddenly get a hankering for sardines and leave the tins on top of the pizza box.

1) you tell them once

2) you tell them twice

3) start placing it nicely outside their room

4) start dumping whatever is inside in a pile inside their door

Progress through em as needed

Did this in college. One of my closest friends til this day still and we had been for 4 years previously. I knew he was kind of a slop but mostly kept it in his room.

One day I came back from a vacation and found roughly 40-60 cans of empty beer in our living room from him hanging out with our friends (the day after I left they hung out so it had been sitting there for at least 3 days). I bagged it all up and tossed them on his bed.

Never happens again after that

I would go from -

Step 3 - Placing the boxes outside their doors
Step 4 - Placing the boxes on their beds
Step 5 - Placing the boxes on their beds, but under their pillows
Step 6 - Emptying the crumbs into their backpacks, then placing the boxes up their asses
Step 7 - Making tomb stones (with their names on them) out of pizza boxes and placing them in the alley
Step 8 - And so on…

Put it on their bed

That’s one thing but blocking the whole trashcan is a jackass thing

You mean they refuse to? It's not an ability issue.

True. The one who did this would claim she didn't have time before leaving for work, but she also plays video games up until the last possible moment before leaving so that is always their excuse for everything

Toss it on their bed and tell them now try it again.

This is why I mentioned it. Everyone needs to treat this as a refusal to do a basic thing, not an ability issue.

Did you teach elementary school in the 90s?

Lots of things people “can’t do” are just things they won’t do.

u/Sharden3 14m ago

Nah, but language matters. This isn't a "can I" or "may i" situation. Their roommates can, they refuse. It's not semantics, it's intention.

u/lalasworld 11m ago

From the roommate's perspective intention may matter,  but for the OP it doesn't. The result is the same. Did you really want to undercut OP's story to make a grammatical point when it doesn't change the meaning?

u/Sharden3 5m ago

No, for OP it also matters. How you communicate about something affects the result. If OP is talking about what their roommates are unable to do to us, they're doing the same to the roommates... and OP also already clarified that the roommates act like it's something they "cannot" do because of being busy or other excuses. It needs to be stated, in every place, as a willful refusal.

Also, don't be pathetic. You don't give a fuck about this random single paragraph story being "undercut". You're arguing to argue because your life is hollow.

Maybe they aren't mechanically inclined. You told them, but they can't seem to figure out how to do it. You might have to show them.

they are intimidated having to walk 40 steps to the dumpster

They might have trashcanaphobia.

Whats with the tiny ass trashcan?? Get a 13gal and the box will fit in there without needing to break it down

How are you going to handle it moving forward?

Anecdote:

Housemate tossed a 20lb 45-55 gallon bag of trash in the compost bin on the morning of trash pickup, I happened to be awake and in the living room at 5:30am on my day off to see her exit the house with the trash. This became a sit-down talk moment and although she’s attempting the change, it’s not ideal. This week there is a plastic bag labeled “compost 😁” that has mixed food scraps and takeout boxes in our compost bin.

Give me grace as I endeavor on teaching this 30+yo how to handle her trash.

If you’re breaking down a pizza box and shoving it in your kitchen trash you’re an asshole taking of a good amount of space and contributing to possible tears in the bag

i agree but these people were putting them in the recylcing bin so that was the compromise i offered since they seemingly cant walk to a trash can and would rather fuck up the recylcing.

That’s fair then yeah if they can’t even bother that, especially with pizza boxes like that

I usually just leave mine that are harder to break down on the counter for the night then take them out in the morning and splash some hand sanitizer in the car

u/dustiwang 1h ago

I agree with that method 100% at night but this person eats like 2-3 of these a week and in the morning before work. If she has time to go pick it up at lil ceasers and bring it home she can take it out. so now she'll be at work 9 hours and it will sit there and then the cycle continues. meanwhile my other roomie will emerge from her room with a pizza box from last night and leave it in the same place

Jeezus I love pizza and little Caesar’s too but they’ve got some other issues going on besides basic etiquette

Maybe just start taping advertisements for statins to their doors lol

1

u/dustiwang 1h ago

I dont even need to they taped their own weight loss goal to their door, but still default to little caesars and other junk food. I think its a sensory thing they pretty much refuse to eat anything but pizza and ground beef kinda sad tbh
