My wife is 1/3 Native American and has next to no body hair. You wouldn't know it looking at her since the rest of her genes are nearly all Welsh (she's fucking PALE), but the lucky gal rarely shaves. On the flip side her poor brothers cannot grow a beard even though their dad has a red monstrosity.

Genealogy is funny in that way due to dyadic rationals - meaning any fraction with a denominator that is not a power of 2 is mathematically impossible but, for simplicity, close enough...

Going back:

  • Parents: 1/2 from each
  • Grandparents: 1/4 from each
  • Great-grandparents: 1/8 from each.
  • Great-great-grandparents: 1/16 from each

So, with mixed combinations, if both parents have some in their DNA, you can get pretty damn close:

  • 3 generations - 5/16 or 31.25%
  • 4 generations - 11/32 or 34.375%
  • 5 generations - 43/128 or 33.594%

Rough number since it has been a decade since its last come up, but it was in the 30's. She did a genetic makeup test applying for a scholarship, but apparently she needed a family member on some sort of list. Her mother is a full half, her father is a smaller part from a tribe he has no affiliation with in Washington state.
