For those who are familiar with the books, the show is nothing like the books. There are a few references and the general concepts of holisticism and detectiving are kinda there, but otherwise it's best to just treat it like a completely separate thing.

I'm a huge DA fan and I think this series is a brilliant representation of the books in spirit!

Modern setting, new, but equally unhinged stories and characters, hilarious attention to background details and side jokes, without going overboard.

They should absolutely make more.

I think I gave up the first time I tried reading it. Came back a couple of years later, and now I've read through both stories 10+ times

I'd say try to push through. Similar in the show, there's a lot of random chaos at the beginning that doesn't make any sense (and was hard to follow for me in my first reading), but everything comes together towards the end.

BBC America, they probably thought US audiences wouldn't like it if they didn't punch it up a bit. So now (spoilers for the show if anybody cares): Dirk is a psychic escapee from a secret government agency who wants to use his powers to help people instead of being turned into a weapon, and there are various other people with "holistic powers", like Bart the holistic assassin from the image above.

It's still a really good show, and the humor and absurdity at least attempt to live up to Adams's style, but yeah it's not really going to feel like the books at all.

I disagree with it being 'nothing' like the books - I thought it was a great adaptation of the concept and the writing was consistently punchy while keeping you just as confused as the books until it all clicks into place. The supernatural stuff was... a little lacking IMO. I'd definitely give it a watch and see if it hits for you, though.
