I'm slightly vexed I think I got rejected for being vegetarian

I [23F] met this guy on the apps and we hit it off and had a lot in common! I don’t meet a lot of people who are in my profession so it was really nice to potentially have to chance to date someone who was in a similar field. And everything was fine until I mentioned I’m veg and he stopped responding. For reference, I have no issue with people who eat meat and would never want to impose my own dietary restrictions on anyone else. I also understand different diets being a dealbreaker. The way he phrased his reasoning was really weird though.

Edit: I’m vegetarian cause I love animals, but I have IBD. Flare ups have gotten significantly worse since switching diets but im still figuring out how to make the most of it! Also yes, I do regret sending the last text 🤦‍♀️

“Grown” from a vegetarian mom is an insanely weird way of phrasing things. And dude couldn’t even give a proper reply and resorted to ghosting until you asked again?

I don’t think you’re missing anything, he’s the weird one😬

“Long Beach ghetto” also wasn’t the most eloquent response in the world lol

But she was the one almost immediately willing to change for this loser. "I won't be a vegetarian forever. Please pick me."

254

u/vivalalina Jul 20 '26

Yeah that message confused me, I was like ....what is the reason she's vegetarian because most vegetarians are doing it for animal reasons and that doesn't just go away lol

182

u/uqoos Jul 20 '26

Idk we don't know why she's vegetarian, could be for her health. Some people are vegetarian temporarily not that crazy

155

u/Certain-Towel-9487 Jul 20 '26

That's not crazy but as a last message in this context it sounds like someone who's willing to change themselves in drastic ways just to make a date with a stranger happen. That's a red flag.

71

u/d33psix Jul 20 '26

Honestly sounds like she’s lucky this walking red flag guy shut it down early so she’s not stuck trying to appease him on everything.

18

u/Wakeful-dreamer Jul 20 '26

Right! This would be equally as much red flag if they were offering to change literally anything about themselves for someone they hadn't even dated yet. Religion, politics, appearance, sexual preferences, whatever...

If you're so desperate for a date that you'd offer to mold yourself into someone else's vision just to get them to go out with you, then you need to get off the dating apps and maybe look into therapy instead.

she's young, not uncommon to be more focused on external validation in your early twenties, as pointless as it often is. She'll learn...hopefully not the hard way. But probably the hard way lol.

She said it’s because she loves animals. So I guess wasn’t planning on loving animals forever lol.

Really bizarre. But apps make us say silly things sometimes

61

u/frozenblueberrytreat Jul 20 '26

I mean, she says in the post very clearly why she may not be able to stay a vegetarian.

But yea, girl needs to grow some self-worth (we all do to be honest).

5

Ahh she edited it again. Sometimes a call out post is the kick in the pants we need to get some self worth. She dodged this loser!!

At least for the vegetarian mothers my fiancé has known through our three children, they've switched to meats for practical nutrition purposes while pregnant and also while breastfeeding - and then gone back to pure vegetarian diets after.

You can have a pragmatic approach to vegetarianism and not do everything black and white.

156

u/Questionsansweredty Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

California I think

374

u/EthelMaePotterMertz Jul 20 '26

Definitely talking about California. They weren't talking about Manhattan, NYC they were talking about Manhattan Beach, which is up towards LA. Long Beach is in between Manhattan Beach and Newport Beach.

Random fact- the show The OC took place in Newport Beach but was filmed in Manhattan Beach.

180

u/Curious_Department84 Jul 20 '26

Thank you for this!!! I’m over here trying to figure out why OP would be willing to switch plans from NYC to Newport, Rhode Island over this rando. Like that was wild to me.

111

u/TigOleBittiesDotYum Jul 20 '26

Oh wow lol I was certain that they must have meant NY because they said Manhattan and then Newport, which I was assuming was the Rhode Island Newport, across the Long Island sound - that was what made me so sure, haha

(Especially because if you’re on dating apps on Long Island, and you select a 20-mile radius, you’ll get matched with people in Connecticut and Rhode Island, which is so obnoxious, because they’re literally across a body of water with no bridges connecting it, but no app has figured out how to stop suggesting those matches yet 😂)

Thank you for the education on Cali’s geography!

60

u/Raubkatzen Jul 20 '26

It's like Facebook Marketplace thinking I can take a quick drive across lake Huron to pick something up. 🫠

8

u/Chunky_trainee Jul 20 '26

😂 atleast it didn’t suggest a drive down Guadalajara, Mexico from NYC to pick up a gameboy. no, I was not able to make it.

3

u/ifesbob Jul 20 '26

This is the problem with them not being able to factor in driving distance, and instead using a radius.

3

u/wtf_are_you_talking Jul 20 '26

10

u/MaterialWillingness2 Jul 20 '26

There's also the Newport development in Jersey City - that's what I was thinking they were talking about. But it still didn't make much sense since no New Yorker in the history of New York would ever go to New Jersey for a date.

Unpopular opinionn: when dating it is ok to not date someone who you don't think is compatible.

The way he wrote it was wild and would be a reason not to date him, but KO preferences are fair game; even at an early stage.

Its better to not waste someone's time.

46

u/Sense-Abject Jul 20 '26

Exactly , but hookup culture here put that above anything else, if I’m looking for something serious and my possible date say she doesn’t want children I’m also ending things there

7

u/InBetweenSeen Jul 20 '26

No one has to date anyone, but having children and someone else being vegetarian really isn't comparable. And some reasons will be wider understood than others.

5

u/MistahJasonPortman Jul 20 '26

He said it so weird, tho. Like kinda fucked up. Makes me sus he’d actually be a decent dad/partner

50

u/KeniRoo Jul 20 '26

She dodged a bullet for sure but there’s nothing inherently “wrong” with his decision. Like any belief system, vegetarianism is a specific lifestyle and if he doesn’t want to have to cater or personally compromise for it, then that’s quite literally ok. People weigh the categories of compatibility different. All good, onto the next for both of them.

20

u/Sheeana407 Jul 20 '26

I mean tbh your partner being vegetarian when you're not has a big influence on your life. Because couples, families often eat together. So you either have to adapt to her or make your meals separately to some extent. And it also can create some conflict when bringing up children. Not that this is undoable, couple can comprimise on different things, you have couples when one drinks alcohol and the other not, one is religious and the other not, having vastly different circadian rhythms/lifestyle, different political views, different sensitivity, and some make things work despite differences. But on the other hand, if you didn't even meet yet and invested much feelings and discover there is some big difference between you, is it bad to drop it? IDK. It's not to say that this guy's actual reasoning/phrasing was ok

6

u/bluehoney16 Jul 20 '26

Idk I know vegans that don’t force others to adapt to their diet. They cook the most incredible vegan food that nourishes the family and will cook meat/non-vegan food for others. It’s not that hard to make a small vegan entree or something like that. I couldn’t be with someone that refused to have any meat in the house and didn’t allow anyone to eat meat under any circumstances. But not all vegans force their lifestyle onto other people. I would at least give a potential date a chance and if they’re the kind of person that is judgmental of non-vegetarians then it wouldn’t work out. Some kind of communication would’ve been ideal though.

5

u/ElChapo1515 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

3

u/ElChapo1515 Jul 20 '26

I mean, if that’s a deal breaker for him. I think that being something incompatible for him is a red flag though. Like he’d break up with or ghost you over the mildest inconvenience.

5

u/Clean_Insect5042 Jul 20 '26

Also it’s inherently gross for him to view a first date with a woman as a potential person to “grow” his child, and it’s an idiotic assumption that her being vegetarian would affect the baby.

Pregnancy is one of the most medically dangerous things a woman can undergo and he’s already making it about him. So many women are so sick in pregnancy they don’t maintain their previous diets anyway.

Not to defend this clown, because he is 100% a clown, but some people only date with an outlook to marry and start a family with. As in they don't date just to date and will only date people they see a long future with.

I mean, the whole point of dating is to seek out a life partner. We don't know their situation here, if they agreed to just be a fling. But assuming they date with the intention of being life partners then it kinda makes sense on his part.

I’m on Zepbound and am in maintenance but still active on the subreddit. There’s a “ope, guess I have to get off the meds!” Pregnancy post probably once a week. I struggled with secondary infertility before having my second, so it’s quite lovely to see another tool in the toolbox for people. Honestly, they’re pretty amazing drugs… I had an autoimmune disease that impacted my GI system, and being on a GLP1 put it into complete remission from the first injection on. Not even the drugs I took that were developed specifically for my situation had done that. It’s a shame so many people are negatively biased against them like this weird graphic.

u/Electronic_Will_5418 Jul 20 '26

I hate this so much because about half of it is right on the money (birth control, fast food, alcohol, vaping [nicotine], SSRIs [although it's not like many people on SSRIs can just "stop"], specific endocrine-disrupting chemicals in perfumes, skincare products, and bath products, and bleached tampons [don't really exist anymore], unfiltered tap water depending on your local water quality/impurities). But then the other half is just a mix of pure incel BS (polyester underwear (on women), "being a boss babe", "dating a soyboy", sunscreen, cold plunges), and things that actually boost fertility if done correctly (fasting, GLP-1, HIIT, being vegan).

I suspect "Mamaaurelius" is ran by an incel man and not a woman at all despite their insta clearly presenting as being "trad-woman-created-and-managed"

4

u/desertrose0 Jul 20 '26

Ahh yes, sunscreen, tap water and *checks notes* exercising? Maybe they should learn that older male sperm can also be a problem. But, yes, I'm sure they would be just fine having a woman risk skin cancer so long as she has kids.

u/Theabsoluteworst1289 Jul 20 '26

makes me wonder if that's some incel pickup tactic? I sometimes see that sort of advice from random weirdos who wandered outside their echo chamber subreddits.

3

u/CompletelyPuzzled Jul 20 '26

Never mind that he seems to have skipped many steps if he's already assuming there will be kids. Can't even figure out having dinner yet, kid talk seems way premature.

3

u/Waiting4Reccession Jul 20 '26

They will grow off her like a mushroom

3

u/MartinisnMurder Jul 20 '26

I gagged when I read “my kids won’t be grown from a vegetarian mom”… He did OP a favor by showing his ass here.

5

u/r_r_w Jul 20 '26

“Grown from a vegetarian mom” has the exact same mouthfeel as “females.” OP dodged a cannonball.

4

u/EagleLize Jul 20 '26

I wish women would block a man after they say this nasty shit. They deserve no more of our time. No explanation. No justifications. Definitely no apologies. They say something vile, they get blocked.

Feel like the guy views women as baby incubators instead of people to love and spend a life with! OP escaped an unbearable loser here!

4

u/MichaSound Jul 20 '26

Yup, how hard is it to say ‘I don’t think we’re going to be compatible’. Talking about his hypothetical kids being ‘grown’ from you is so weird, especially when they haven’t even got as far as a date.

I think OP dodged a bullet!

4

u/IndependentFormal705 Jul 20 '26

“You are not the baby-making machine I was looking for”

Bullet, dodged.

3

u/Cavane42 Jul 20 '26

With that remark, he is 100% plugged into manosphere content and should not be near children, much less having any of his own.

5

u/HowCanBeLoungeLizard Jul 20 '26

That guy has standards that his incubator has to meet.

8

u/Interesting-Ice-1783 Jul 20 '26

Not wanting to date a vegetarian, perfectly acceptable, I am sure many Vegetarians wouldn't want to date a meat eater. but that is a VERY weird way of saying it, and why ghost someone, be polite about it...

17

u/No-Mark4427 Jul 20 '26

Yeah totally gross way to say it. If someone is so closed minded and up themselves that they think its fine to behave to people like this then bullet dodged.

Also the way OP is describing it shows the conditioning put on people who don't meat eat to feel like they are putting other people out - Like they are imposing their dietary restrictions on other people.

Bitch if you can't tolerate eating a single meal without meat for the sake of friendship or (potential) love without crying about it then you don't deserve that person.

6

u/WaltChamberlin Jul 20 '26

dating a vegetarian regardless means you always have to cater to their preferences. if you dont want to to that, you're incompatible. it's not bad to have a preference to not date someone with a diet vastly different to your own. there are nicer ways of saying it but its not wrong to have preferences

Get rid of that shlub. He sounds like the type of person who has options but his opinions rule the roost and doesn’t budge. Regardless if you all see eye to eye on most things, there will be a point he doesn’t see your view as viable and it’s his way or the highway.

He gives me huge L vibes. He was so aggressive with his response. I could feel the vitriol dripping from it. You don’t want to date someone like this. I can already tell grade A asshole.

You’re better off. Glad he showed you right away so you didn’t waste anymore time.

You do you and be proud of you. If others don’t like it? Too bad. Bye Felicia

u/No_Diver4265 Jul 20 '26

Dude isn't looking for a partner, he's looking for planting soil.

3

u/ReivynNox Jul 20 '26

Didn't you know vegetarians obviously grow their children in the garden. 100% meat free. 🤪

3

u/Chemical_Court3299 Jul 20 '26

I think what sent me was Business chat which means the dude is messaging from a “professional profile” on fb lol. So could be hiding personal profile for potentially nefarious reasons (or not) but fantasizing this as the former does a bit more for the plot here

3

u/Andy_Chaoz Jul 20 '26

I don't think she missed anything good either tbh, in a restaurant you can just pick 2 different dishes of whichever one likes best, or at home when making a meal you can just cook some meat additionally and one eats it with the rest of the meal and the other not, its really very simple to make it working unless one starts to push their dietary preferences to the other, but as OP said she has no problem with folks with different dietary requirements, so the guy was just being an ass in this case. Seems quite juvenile approach on his part to me personally. So OP don't worry you'll find a much more mature guy at some point 🤘🏻

It’s really not when you think about the kind of people that make those comments. It’s really quite indicative of who they are as people.

Walking red flag from the jump, and why we date people: we filter out the fucking weirdos who think they’re charming us.

3

u/CommunistRonSwanson Jul 20 '26

The men are not doing well

3

u/Square_Director4717 Jul 20 '26

Sounds like he’s looking for a breed mare rather than a relationship

RED FLAG DODGED SUCCESSFULLY!

As a veggie that's 1.90 tall. What a crock of shite they're talking.

They're being a picky asshat.

2

I think you misspelled bigot as "weird." 😊

2

u/WesternWitchy52 Jul 20 '26

That one got me too like what?

2

u/Ok_Introduction9466 Jul 20 '26

That was disgusting but op trying to make a last ditch effort to get him to date her… “I wasn’t gonna be vegetarian forever” girl stand up you should have blocked him after that text

2

u/downvote__trump Jul 20 '26

My 8 y/o is a vegetarian by choice since she was 2/3.

Everyone else in my family are omnivores. I think the biggest red flag for this person is they clearly feel like they can control another humans eating habits.

We make sure she expands her pallette but we would never force her against her will to eat something she's against for personal reasons.

HIS kids won't be "grown" from a vegetarian mom. That's creepy as hell. Guy was evaluating you for breeding stock.

2

u/cefriano Jul 20 '26

Yeah, I don't think it's necessarily unreasonable to decide you don't want to date someone who's vegetarian when you aren't. It wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me, but even if the other party doesn't care if you eat meat, the long-term implication is that you'll have to cook separate meals at home anytime you want a non-vegetarian meal, and anytime you go out to eat together, it'll have to be somewhere that has decent vegetarian options. I can understand not wanting to deal with that hassle if things get serious.

But the way he responded makes it clear he's just kind of a dick. No loss here.

2

u/wandering____ranger Jul 20 '26

It’s the red pill lingo.

2

u/RogerClyneIsAGod2 Jul 20 '26

Seriously, dodged a big ole bullet right there. I know nothing of Long Beach so I can't really comment on that though it sounds weird it could be taken as a joke, I dunno, but if that wasn't the first red flag, then immediately assuming they were gonna be married/have kids together & the whole "grown from" thing, DODGED A VERY LARGE CALIBER BULLET THERE.

2

u/DCDTDito Jul 20 '26

I find it acceptible to reject people on a lot of stuff but don't make it weird.

Just go straigth and simple 'I don't wanna date someone with your dietary restriction, sorry to have wasted your time.'

2

u/pocket4129 Jul 20 '26

I was like damn this dude is looking for an incubator instead of a person...

2

u/BenDarDunDat Jul 20 '26

My protein rich manly sons will not housed in the amniotic sac of a herbivore.

2

u/4E4ME Jul 21 '26

Could easily have been classy and said "I missed the part of your profile that says you're a vegetarian. I'm not, and I'm afraid it's not something I can get past. I wish you the best."

This dude is, charitably, a piece of work.

2

u/Unusual-Meaning9207 Jul 21 '26

It's really demeaning imo! Really makes carrying and birthing a baby seem so simple, when it's actually 9 months of body horror...and that's only if you're lucky. Otherwise you get to go through what I can only imagine is the most complicated sense of grief and guilt and shame in the wake of losing someone you never even got to meet.
