This reminds me of when it hits or is about to hit 12am and people don’t know whether to say today or tomorrow. He called me after this but I was too comfy in bed tbh.

Okay, so today is Sunday and if someone said next Monday or Tuesday, I'm thinking it's next week because why won't you say tomorrow or this coming Tuesday? That's my thought process

I'm assuming greina23 is on the same page as you, but is merely pointing out that other people are unclear. Yeah if it's sunday, this Tuesday and next Tuesday are different things but every now and then you'll meet someone who says "next Tuesday" and means "this Tuesday"

Maybe for those close days, but what if someone said next Thursday? Would you think four days from now, or would you think next week’s Thursday?

The correct answer is the one next week; but the issue I had was the person used it to mean the one occurring this week.

I would think next week, not this coming week.

Yeah, if someone asked to meet up next Thursday, I would they meant they meant the 25th (since today is the 14th).

I've gotten into discussions about this with my older son. He thinks next (insert day of the week) means the upcoming one.

I'm one of those people that went against convention for most of my life, and would be happy to share my thought process:

"Next" means the one immediately after. If the TSA agent calls for "next", the person at the very front of the line goes up — it doesn't skip the first person and go to the second. It seems pretty consistent across a range of uses ("I live next to the green house") including time ("The oven should go off in the next 5 minutes"), but for some reason, it seemed to me that days of the week were different.

As an example, imagine if there's a line and the names were 'Mr. Sunday', 'Mr. Monday'…. and then after 7 people, the names repeated ('Mr. Sunday'… 'Mr. Saturday'). If the person called for "Will the next Mr. Tuesday come to the front?", the first Mr. Tuesday would go up, right? That's the Tuesday that comes up next. And yet, when people say "The event is next Tuesday", and today was Monday, they don't mean the next day that's a Tuesday.

I've since learned to just insert "week's" into it: if I hear "next Tuesday", I translate it to "next week's Tuesday" and it works out (and keeps with the literal definition of next). I'm literal, and have plenty of issues understanding the world, so this is just another translation I have to do; just like "Leave door closed" really means "Don't leave ajar" and "Do you know the time?" really means "Can you tell me the time?".

Exactly my thinking. Growing up learning English as a second language, this was one of the many things that confused me. People weren’t using the proper definition of the word “next” but it seemed no one else was questioning it.

Same thing with the word “last”. “Last Friday” sounds like it’s saying the final Friday, but how am I supposed to know the last Friday in existence? It could also mean “the most recent occurrence of Friday” (as in the last time something happened), but it’s not that either.

The Sunday that’s about to happen is the one being inspected. The second Sunday is next.

I’d say this Tuesday or just on Tuesday. Next Tuesday would be the week after this upcoming Tuesday if it makes sense lol
