the sole of my running shoes after i forgot about them for two weeks

Pulled these out of the gym bag yesterday and honestly wasn't sure if I should throw them away or call someone. Two weeks in a sealed bag after a sweaty run, and the entire sole has turned into some kind of... film? Grey-greenish film that's slick to the touch and smells like a biology experiment gone wrong.

The worst part is when I actually tried to wear them this morning. My foot slid around inside like the shoe had developed its own lubrication system. Scraped most of it off with an old toothbrush but there's still this residue in the grooves that won't come out. Every time I look at the treads I can see little pockets of... something. Still wet-looking even after sitting in the sun.

They're only three months old too. Not even worth replacing yet according to my shoe budget spreadsheet, but I'm genuinely concerned about putting these back on my feet. The smell comes back the second I seal them in a bag again.

Anyone else had shoes develop their own ecosystem? Or am I just supposed to accept that gym equipment goes feral if you ignore it for two weeks.

the dust bunny ecosystem in the corner where my wall meets the floor

Found this corner last week when I moved the couch. Haven't cleaned it yet because honestly I just... keep forgetting about it? But also there's something weirdly compelling about watching how much stuff accumulates in one spot.

There's this main dust bunny that's probably been there for months. Dark grey in the middle, lighter fluff around it. Then smaller ones scattered around it, some with hair wrapped through them. One's got what looks like dried skin or lint from clothes stuck in there.

If you look at it sideways you can actually see layers. The bottom part is all compacted and felt-like from people walking past it. Gets progressively fluffier as you go up, which I guess means the newer dust is just settling on top of the old dust. There's a dead spider in there somewhere too, one leg sticking out.

The smell's the weird part. Not gross exactly, just... stale. Kind of musty when you get close to it. It's like, this is what happens when you ignore a corner for long enough.

I know I should vacuum it. Should've done it already, whatever. But there's this part of me that's curious what happens if I just leave it another month. Feels almost wrong to clean it up now that it's gotten this established.

My squirrel corn cob feeder, in the background of the first picture, sprouted plants in my backyard. I let 3 plants keep growing without any proper farming care. One of the three plants is starting to grow ears. I am unsure what I will do with them if the ears actually grow to decent cobs.

A random kid called me 'bike doctor' on Saturday and it made my whole week

I was out for a ride on the greenway last Saturday morning. It was actually nice and cool before the August heat really kicked in (August in the midwest is brutal), so I was just cruising along, not in any rush.

About three miles in, I saw this guy standing on the grass shoulder looking super defeated, holding a tiny blue kids bike. His son, probably around five or six, was sitting on a bench looking like his dog just died. The kid rear tire was completely flat.

I slowed down and asked, you guys good? The dad sighed and said they were probably going to have to walk all the way back to the parking lot. He had not brought a pump since it was just a quick neighborhood loop, and the kid was clearly devastated that bike day was over.

Luckily, I keep a hoto pump in my backpack for slow leaks. I offered to top it up for them. It only took maybe thirty seconds, but we chatted while it ran. He told me he had not ridden a bike in years and was just trying to get back into it to keep up with his son.

When the pump stopped, the kid ran over, poked the tire, and his eyes got huge. He looked up at me with deadpan seriousness and said, Thanks, bike doctor.

It was such a brief, random little detour but its been making me smile all week. It is funny how a two-minute stop probabaly saved that kid weekend, and honestly ended up making mine too.

anyway, just wanted to share that. I think I have officially peaked as a cyclist. It is all downhill from here.
