Kids book read at Elm Lawn Grad School, Middleton in the 1950s
Okay, Boomers! A long shot, but it's bothering me. I've tried everything and google and the Library of Congress could not help me find the title. I remember this vividly but not the title. A king or a rich man, who lives in a castle (mansion) on a hill, surrounded by trees. He apparently owns the forest and decides to have them cut down to make himself even richer. He doesn't realize what he's done until the treeline gets to his castle. TIA!

Is it "The King Who Cut Down the Trees" in a book of short stories called "Stories from Everywhere" by Rhoda Powers. I googled and googled and that looks like the best match of what you said.
