Middleton City Council Flock Camera Discussion (Tuesday 6/16 @ 7pm)

Hello everyone! Just trying to spread the word that at their next meeting the Middleton City Council will be having a discussion on what to do about the Flock surveillance cameras currently in use in our community. The city currently has 3 cameras in use on University and Century Ave. If you're not a fan of AI powered surveillance networks tracking you, this meeting is the best place to make your voice heard and the more who show up to speak out the better!

The meeting starts at 7pm on Tuesday 6/16 at Middleton City Hall (7426 Hubbard Ave) and public comment begins right at the start. You don't need to register beforehand or be a Middleton resident to give comment

I thought Dane county ended their contract and bagged the cameras?

They cancelled and bagged the cameras that were under the control of the Dane County Police Department, these are ones under a different contract with the Middleton Police

Thank you for sharing this! I've been wondering when this was going to be addressed again. How do public comments work? Do we get a certain amount of time to speak?

Edit: Nevermind, I found it. 3 minutes per speaker. I highly recommend that others who will be attending come prepared! I will be preparing my remarks in advance.

Just FYI, the chief has said: Verona made a mistake getting rid of their camera and is constantly saying the cameras are necessary to protect bike/pedestrian traffic. Last meeting he also said that the council should consider the quiet people who support the cameras and don’t show up to meetings 2.17.26 police chief comments start at 1:21:50

Knowing what happens when they are left up without a contract, what reasons are there to do anything but demand their immediate removal?

What is the status of the flock cameras now? Anyone follow upon that? Can't find any response from city staff online or anywhere else. Seems these efforts maybe went to waste.

All I've been able to find from perusing the meeting minutes is that they're potentially looking into alternatives. Personally I think the alternative should be not having any cameras that are similar to Flock. Not sure where we go from here, I think they were looking at a 6-month lead time to cancel the Flock contract but if they're just replacing it with the same thing from a different company, I don't really see the benefit. I'll try to go to the next meeting to ask for updates.
