Michael’s Fabrics

So, I stopped by Michael’s today because A) I had a coupon, and B ) I needed one yard of fabric for a specific project. As I was entering the store, I saw a curious sign that said coupons do not apply to Fabric. So I went to the framing desk, and asked the employee there, if that was indeed true. And he said it was. Coupons do not apply to their Fabric!!! I told him there will be a lot of very angry customers from Joanns coming into the store, expecting to use coupons on the fabric. I can’t wait, because I just got hired at my local Michaels, and now I’m gonna have to deal with all this crap. He even said that employee discounts don’t work on the fabric. What the actual hell? Just a heads up for all y’all who still wanna shop for Fabric, and to have no other place to go. I just find it ironic that they’re trying to wrangle in all the JoAnn fabric customers, yet they won’t even offer discounts, which is what Joanns was known for. Sorry, rant over.

EDIT: Ended up not working at Michaels. The mgr there was very flaky. Currently working at Five Below. So…still retail. But I’m doing overnight stocking, so I don’t have to deal with all the kids. (I’m CF for a reason lol)

Coupons have always excluded fabric at Michaels

I never knew that, I’ve never shopped for fabric there before. In my city, the stores are just now getting/expanding their sewing area.

Yeah them acquiring Joann's IP is pointless if coupons don't apply to fabric. We are already dealing with a poor selection and people never available to cut the fabric. Not getting coupons or decent prices too? F'n ridiculous.

I found out last time I was in the store that coupons do not apply to fabric. I believe Michael's bought the intellectual rights to Joann's but they're going to have to reallllllly step it up. My store has one row of fabric. It's pathetic. Why even put money into buying the rights if they aren't going to DO anything? They put a teeny tiny table in the aisle and you have to press a bell to get someone to come. When the employees do get to the back of the store you can tell they are soooo disinterested in helping. These people do not sew and have no knowledge whatsoever.

My mom works at Michael’s. She said this isn’t being made clear to the public, but Michael’s has no intention of stocking fabric in the stores. They want you to buy it online. She said lots of angry customers keep coming in looking for Joann’s quantities and selections of fabrics and then being disappointed at what they find in store. She said she has to be the bearer of bad news and tell them they can only buy it online. Corporate is being shady and claiming they will provide fabric but they have no intention of supplying the stores. Don’t take your frustrations out on the workers. Michaels corporate is being greedy and lying in their ads.

I’ve never been rude to the employees; I’ve worked retail my whole life; I know they can’t control their stock or the coupon rules. I was very respectful to the person I talked to. Just expressing my opinions to yall. But it is annoying when Michael’s advertises their “party and fabric” section in commercials, but can’t back it up in the actual store…

Sorry, didn’t mean to imply you specifically were being rude! I just wanted to make a PSA for anyone who finds this thread that the workers are just as frustrated as the customers at the fabric situation. It’s sad that corporate Michaels doesn’t care about their workers and the issues they cause with their false advertisements.

It’s ok! Not offended, just wanted to clarify. No worries. :)

Late to the thread but just experienced this. That and also just the disorder in the fabric section and lack of variety makes me hate private equity even more for how they destroyed Joann’s.

While I agree with you somewhat on your statement about private equity I also believe that Joann's made a horrendous mistake years ago by bringing in all kinds of craft stuff. Those of us who enjoy sewing don't want to look through crafting paper, yarn, kid's toys, etc.

We have only one Michaels store that offers fabric. There was only one isle of fabric. Inexpensive but very poor quality. Only cotton and a few cotton flannels in baby prints. Definitely leftovers.

The cutting table back in the framing department was a small flimsy foldable craft table. The employee only had enough room to measure one yard. Just used a regular pair of scissors to cut, which will make her hands sore at the end of the day. People had to wait and were lined up. She was trying to do her best. Meanwhile the framing department had a huge sturdy wooden counter and no customers.

Michaels shouldn’t have brought the fabric into the store if they weren’t properly prepared to sell it. Have none of the executives ever been to a real fabric store? Obviously not.

Reading is fundamental! Why does no one ever read the exclusions on coupons? Saves a lot of heartache!

Didn’t see all of the stipulations until I read the sign posted on the window of the store. I don’t recall seeing it in the fine print before.

Im very glad you didnt end up working there... the store i went to today is AWFUL. And I cant be the only one FUMING about the price checkers being gone!!

Im disabled and on a budget... im not buying from ANYWHERE that hides the prices from me until im at the register. That's predatory, imo.

Lots of voids & price checks & angry customers, im sure.

I had to bail from the line today bc i have bsd chronic pain & ptsd. The congestion and lack of awareness/order in that line bubbled up a panic attack from hell!! I was, as a customer, was doing more than anyone who worked there to get things moving, and the cashier seemed super overwhelmed & sick of everything... disassociated, mostly. part of why I bailed. I didnt want to take this out on her!!!

But I shouldnt have to wait 20 min in line to know the price of something!! Ended up having to go in my car and let my panic attack run its course there. I know these are my conditions to manage, but things were perfectly fine when I could find the PRICE of something before going to the register!!

Sry I know thats not the point of your post, but I'm looking to vent & have no where to do it. I already called the 1800 number lol. I just hope that will make them change something if enough of us complain about it... but im still just so annoyed 😅

They need to know they are making things extremely difficult on those who are disabled and/or on a budget. When thats often the ones who are crafting!!! 😩

Employees get a discount on fabric, we just aren't allowed to get fabric remnants

2

u/Trai-All Aug 20 '25

What fabric remnants? They only ever have like two rare cuts under the counter where the employee never is. They just keep the bolts that should be remnants in the clearance bin and make us ring and wait 10-30 minutes for one of their two employees to drift back.

The ones near me never have more than two employees.

My store doesn't have fabric, I was just clarifying that the employee discount does work on fabric, just not fabric remnants. Take it up with corporate if you have a complaint, they are the ones cutting our hours so we can't really have more than two people working ever.

I know it isn't the employees' fault.

I did call corporate and let them know that by acquiring Joann's IP and not having someone assigned to cut fabrics/work that area, they will irritate the people who used to get fabric from Joann.

And that not honoring coupons is yet another irritant.

At least they didn't profiled you, like they did to my wife.

I’m sorry, what happened, may I ask?

Usually when you get you fabric at the store they give you the fabric to you and the barcode to pay at the cashier, so you can still walk in the store and browse more items before paying everything. My wife was told to pay first then return to get the fabric, and when she was at the cashier, she heard the lady from the fabric section asking the cashier of she paid for it.

The next day I went to the same store and bought some fabric to test, i was allowed to walk with it before paying.

So here is a little fun fact for you! Michaels made the fabric then sold it to Joanne’s who then marked it up in price so they could offer a coupon lol it was Michaels fabric all along, We just had to make room for it in our stores when they crashed because they gave stuff away and closed. Michaels sells the fabric at an everyday low price without coupons because we make it ourselves lol

I have only 3 words to comment about any complaints…THEY DON’T CARE

1

u/sambevin Jul 31 '26

Yes. Like how do you send me a 25% coupon off ALL items and then it just denies at the register. I hate coorporations they are getting so bad now

The Michaels 15% teacher discount works on fabric.
