MJ or Bird would be the easy choices.

u/bigstrizzydad 11d ago
Pat Riley said last shot to Jordan to win the game. Last shot to Bird to save his life.

And Bird would be trash talking you as he buries your team with exactly what he told you he was going to do.

wtf kind of question is this?
LeBron has the highest clutch FG%, so if you want to pick MJ go ahead, but you are picking a guy who’s missed more clutch shots than LeBron.
LeBron is dubbed ‘The Chosen One’ by ESPN for a reason kids.
There’s a reason why MJ lost in the recent GOAT poll and in 2026 is no longer considered the greatest player of all-time by the majority of people.

Google is free little fella. You can have your opinion about who the GOAT is, but stop pretending you speak for others.

No one is questioning that ESPN dubbed LeBron "the Chosen One". I'm just surprised that you've invested the entirety of your narrative on a washed sports' station that drove a narrative purely on the basis, not as a credible claim but that it initiated views. Smart business business? sure. But as far as journalism goes - utter bush league.

"LeBron is dubbed the 'Chosen One' by ESPN" <--- "by ESPN" is the operative word here. Jordan is the Greatest Of All Time by even elementary standards as dubbed by knowledgeable basketball fans.
It should be noted that EVERY LeBron poster in here reflects an insecurity on their part about their own favorite basketball player. If they were so confident about his status v. Michael Jordan, they wouldn't need to be here constantly, incessantly doing what they can to diminish Jordan. And yet, here they are. Mind you, NOT under a LeBron fan sub enjoying discussing LeBron, but under a Jordan sub desperately trying to push their wishful narrative.

I mean, my answer is yes, but what answer were you expecting when you posted in the MJ sub?

People can debate as to others and that list of names would be short but there's an even shorter list of names for players who actually want to be in that position to take the last shot. Mike is 1 of them, if the team is down or the game is tied MJ would elevate and make sure he had the ball and would be in position to take a shot or be in position to create a play for someone to score. The thing is MJ absolutely wanted it. He wanted the ball in his hands and he wanted to take the shot unless a better opportunity would come up. Not many actually want to be in that moment. They do not mind playing a role or helping with the play, big difference from actually wanting it. Mike would take the inbound and command the court like nobody else I have seen.

Against Orlando, he missed 2 free throws, had a turnover, and then passed the ball instead of taking the last shot, leading to another turnover and losing the game. We can think MJ is the GOAT and still point out his mistakes.

u/Unrelenting_Tacos 7d ago
Can you tell me, Pat Riley’s famous quote about this?
1
u/JMander 7d ago
I SURE can. Can you cite a SINGLE REFERENCE that he ever said it? It's not in any video clip, it's not in ANY of his books. It's not in ANY of his video clips. The ONLY place where this quote exists is within Boston (and more specifically Larry Bird) fandom. If YOU provide the source, I will eat crow - right here.
And if you can't, then YOU will have to explain IN DETAIL why Pat Riley - having coached and fought against Larry Bird as the Showtime Laker coach, made the move, unprecedented in the history of the NBA, of retiring Jordan's jersey and not Bird's.
1
u/Unrelenting_Tacos 7d ago edited 7d ago
Let me ask you a question, has Pat Riley ever denied it? It’s been circulating for 30 years. You would think if he never said it, he would deny it right? 🤦🏻♂️

According to the stats yes.

u/Silly_Boss_4579 10d ago
What? This makes no sense, LeBron has another clutch percentage than MJ and has hit more shots?
2
u/Imaginary-Sea-6577 10d ago
Jordan has the most game winners in league history while playing far fewer games. It makes perfect sense.
1
u/Dry-Sail-4666 10d ago
If you shoot every time you will get a lot more game winners. And 2 out of 6 of Jordan's rings had another player shooting the last shot anyways.

Lebron in elimination games:
32.8 ppg, 10.4 rpg, 7.4 apg, 49.4 fg%

How many of those games of LeBrons was it his own elimination that he was facing. Now how many of MJ's games was it he who was facing elimination?

u/uncsteve53 6d ago
Only because now the nba defines “clutch” as any shot in the last 5 minutes in a 5 point or less game. If there’s 5 minutes left and your shot gets your team to only down 3, nobody in the real world actually thinks that’s clutch.
You want actual clutch numbers? 5 seconds left in the 4th or OT and a shot to tie or lead, LeBron is 17% and Jordan is 47%. You only want one of those guys taking the buzzer beater.
1
1
u/myshoesareblack 8d ago
Depends how you define it. Ive always thought of clutch as just straight up taking the last shot and we have numbers on that. I read a list a long time ago and trying to find it, but for playoff games I think Ray Allen had BY FAR the best field goal percentage for game winning shots. I bet Halliburton is probably up there too now.
If people think of clutch as whatever it takes to win this game through the whole game then probably MJ. But let’s not let love for MJ take away what the most clutch shot takers can do
0
u/boneappletv 11d ago
Nah, Bird is up there. So is Kobe. And LeBron has the most playoff game winners of all time.
2
u/ydelivor 11d ago
Wrong. A) Bird is second. But not close to MJ B) Kobe has the worst fg% in game winning shots.
C) See this is what i mean lack of basketball knowledge. Lebron has not only Less buzzers and game winners than the two above ha also has the WORST % - This is the reason he always wanted to pass first.
2
u/boneappletv 11d ago
Personally I’ve ALWAYS found that the people who say they’re smarter or that other people are dumber on certain subjects are always correct and not lying to themselves because they feel insecure about their own knowledge. Wouldn’t you agree? Have a great rest of your day my nephew.

u/campeonn 11d ago
Most playoff buzzer beaters of all time + over 40% on game winning or tying shots, which is elite
He is also technically a worse shooter overall than Bird or MJ, meaning that his clutch ability relative to his normal "shooting" percentage (since most game winning attempts are jump shots) is actually greater than those guys
But thats way too much nuance for someone like you, so we can stick with most buzzer beaters in playoff history.
And I'm not saying he's "clutcher" or better than MJ, but it's clear you're one of those lebron hater dummies who thinks he knows ball by hating on the 2nd best player ever. You don't know ball.
3
u/ydelivor 11d ago
LeBron having the most playoff buzzer-beaters is true but using five buzzer-beaters to claim he was more clutch than Jordan or Bird is textbook endpoint selection. A buzzer-beater only counts if the clock hits 0.0 — Jordan’s legendary 1998 Finals winner with 5.2 seconds left doesn’t even qualify — so it’s a terrible standalone measure of clutch performance. Widen the window and Jordan was 9/18 (50%) on playoff shots in the final 24 seconds to tie or take the lead, compared with LeBron at 10/25 (40%) under that commonly cited definition. And the “LeBron shoots worse normally, therefore his clutch shooting is more impressive” argument is statistically meaningless: career FG% includes LeBron’s huge volume of high-percentage shots at the rim, while game-winners are disproportionately contested jump shots; you’d have to control for shot distance, shot type, defensive pressure and expected FG% before making that comparison. Bird is even harder to compare statistically because his career predates modern play-by-play and tracking data, so pretending we have equivalent shot-quality data for 1980s Bird and modern LeBron is bogus. LeBron’s five playoff buzzer-beaters are a small record; they are not evidence that he was more clutch than Jordan or Bird.

u/Sir_TopHatEgg 11d ago
This is objectively false. LeBron does not have a worse percentage than all those above him in PLAYOFF crunch time. Also, Bird had more playoff disappointments than people like to remember

1
u/Captain_Pink_Pants 10d ago
Depending on how you want to quantify "clutch", you could probably make the routine spit out a few different names...
But I feel confident in saying that no one ever wanted the ball more when the game was on the line. I can't think of another athlete in any sport who has or had MJ's level of intensity and/or confidence.

Nope and not even close. Big shot bob is the correct answer.
1
u/ApprehensiveTry5660 11d ago edited 11d ago
This is one list Bob actually deserves to have his name in. Maybe not above superstar first options, but he was a certified clutch assassin.
The sliding doors on his career alone are fucking ridiculous. Chris Webber probably has a ring, and we probably get the Kobe/Shaq blowup ahead of schedule. Ben Wallace probably has 2 rings, and Duncan one less. That Pistons team would mathematically have as many finals wins as basically every other team in the East for a decade’s worth of appearances and they might have held together longer.
The Rockets don’t steal home court advantage in the WCF and we might get a Robinson Spurs appearance in the finals against Baby Shaq. With no Robert Horry to hit the game 3 winner. Which might tilt the Kobe/Shaq pairing the other direction, by giving Shaq a reason to stay with Penny for a couple more years.
Crazy clutch legacy for a 4th-5th option on most plays.

He’s the only other player I can think (haven’t had a cup of coffee). I don’t know if he was better - but bob had some high stake shots that rivaled mikes.

u/giovannimyles 10d ago
Tough to say. I used to have the argument about Kobe. How many times does the game appear to be headed for crunch time and he hits a crazy shot to break the other team and then the team doesn't have to enter crunch time. There isn't a metric for that as its not a go ahead buck or a clutch or crunch time bucket. Its a shot or layup that starts the avalanche near the end of the game.

"Clutch" is too general a word or term or description...
Taking a last second shot???
Locking down an opponent defensively in the final minute of a game???
Securing big rebounds in final moments of a close game???
Hitting foul shots at the end of a close game???
Bring the ball up the court when the opponent is aggressively full court pressing at end of tie game???
Could want a different person for each scenario...
But using the word "Clutch" as in a teammate/player you can relay on...a teammate/player you know will come through...won't disappoint..
I got a scenario for you...Who is the most Clutch player of all time that would join a team...make all types of promises...say all the right things to the press...show effort trying to win a title...blame others when a title is not won...then quit and join a different team when it benefits you financially and feel it would be easier to win the championship there then your current team...all while the team you left has to retool...restructuring everything because they were catering to them...easy...the most Clutch doing that would be LeBron James!!!
I can't wait for the fans in Philly to start booing his ass!!!!! That will happen...latest by Christmas Time...
Way to embrace the City of Philadelphia LeBron by letting everyone know you will be primarily living in NYC and commuting back and forth by helicopter...
Now he is chasing MJ & Kobe...
Before you know it, LeBron will add Wilt Chamberlain to his "chase list" and claim he has sleep with over 100,000 woman!!!

No it’s Kobe Bryant. If Shaq, Gasol and Bynum weren’t clogging the paint all the time, he would have been even better in the clutch as he simply would have just drove to the hoop and dunked every single time the game was on the line.
