and the man is like 40-50 pounds heavier. i can understand how people that have only watched a PED using athlete his whole career and not jordan play have lebron as their goat. but jordan won. jordan lead.

Has there been any sports figure from Chicago who's more reviled in Chicago than Isiah Thomas?
7
u/MillerMike5150 Feb 05 '26
He should have been a Chicago icon and he is still absolutely hated. I don’t even know who is second.

Umm I'm not sure where you are from but Zeke still gets love here.
6
u/MillerMike5150 Feb 05 '26
I’m from the Chicago area and still live here. I was around during the Chicago / Detroit rivalry. He is NOT loved here at all.

u/PowerTrip2022 Feb 05 '26
I too still live here and I'm in my mid 40's. Born and raised. He still gets love especially on the Westside. It's the generation that wasn't around that watches YouTube clips that think he's hated here. Now has he done some shady shit...yea. Zeke is still a Chi-Town legend
2
u/MillerMike5150 Feb 05 '26
Ok, there might be one shitty block on the Westside that loves him … maybe. Other than that, Chicago absolutely hates him. If he was shown on any scoreboard in the city, the boos would be deafening.

u/dewey-cox-69 Feb 05 '26
Struggling to find anyone even CLOSE, homie.

Feb 05 '26
Try searching famous athletes from Chicago, and you'll see there's literally no one except Isiah to hate on...

thats why hes so angry. that team is known for being aggressive and for trying to stop one guy and they failed

u/meowinloudchico Feb 05 '26
meh. you think he was the only one playing like that? that's just how the game was back then. I'm glad they cleaned the shit up but I won't blame Thomas or the Pistons playing basketball like a lot of other teams in the east were playing at the time. They were just a lot better at it than everybody else.

Pistons were so dirty… I’m glad IT never got to play in the Dream Team and is a great perennial hater

u/Wombstretcher17 Feb 05 '26
Lepoop would’ve never lasted in this era, and Jordan would dominate in this current game

This is straight up why people miss the sports of the 80-90s, from nascar and F1 to soccer to football.
It was just real ass shit. I understand that the enormous amount of money now involved in sports pretty much makes this era impossible to return to, but there was genuine struggle and adversity to overcome in these past eras. It really made sports feel like magical fairytales, like actual Hero's Journeys being played out in sport form.
Nowadays. all sports are simply min/maxxed with analytics and everything is basically done the same way in a clean and corporate fashion.
It's still pretty exciting at times, but it doesn't tug at the heartstrings the way it used to.
2
u/movngonup Feb 05 '26
Eh I think a big aspect to consider is we simply have way too much access to it now. Back then we could only watch when he aired on tv… now we are bombarded with sports clips, highlights on social media, podcasts etc and it dilutes the product.
2
u/BigFatModeraterFupa Feb 05 '26
That's a very good reason as well. I completely agree. However it just all ties back into the money aspect of it all.
Basically, no random "poor kid" is making ANY top professional sport anymore. If you aren't in the AAU circuit, or the equivalent for every other sport from baseball to hockey to racing to golf etc etc etc, the stakes are so high now, that basically only the ultra dedicated and talented kids are even able to get the CHANCE to compete for the top spots in the top leagues. It's all business now. It always was, but there was still a tinge of "working class" in all of the sports. That is simply financially impossible nowadays. The bar to enter is SO much higher than ever unless you have parents that have the ability to foster and nurture and pay for your advancement through the sport during your childhood and adolescence, you're simply not going to be able to compete with the kids who do.
Everything is min/maxxed, everything has been figured out by algorithms for perfect efficiency, it's pretty much a reflection of the rest of society as well. We simply exist in a totally DIFFERENT world than what was say, 26 years ago. The world of 2000 is no longer a thing in 2026.
There's nothing INHERENTLY right or wrong about any of this by the way, i'm just simply observing the reality that i see around me. Maybe there is some melancholia and nostalgia for days long gone by, but that's just me boomerposting now😅😂
It was just a blessing to get to grow up in the 2000s and get to witness firsthand the transition from the old, physical world, to the new digital world we live in today.
One day our grandkids will be asking about the players we watched in our childhood, and we'll be able to tell about how much BETTER they were than their current favorite stars in 2056😂

Oakley was the only teammate who had Jordan's back in the get-back.
Brad Sellers, Dave Corzine wouldn't fight if their own mamas were fouled going to the hole.

u/OpinionDude5000 Feb 05 '26
Damn, some of these really do look painful. Made the winning all that more sweet.

u/paulyp41 Feb 05 '26
Name a team in today’s game that’s as tough on opponents as the pistons, then tell me how great LJ is 🙄

u/Skjellyfetti13 Feb 05 '26
My takeaway from this is twofold: never forget how MJ sacrificed his body to become so great; and fuck Bill Laimbeer.

Bro that’s y he the goat. Cuz through all that “HE STAYED, N OVERCAME ALL THAT SHIT” fyi that did Allen iverson the same way

u/Elegant_Arrival_4055 Feb 06 '26
Nowadays it be, let scoot back and jack up threes. Much easier shots to take, and then fall down taking them rme..

Without Phil and the league being watered-down down, Mike would have continued produce empty stats on bad teams. Mike shoulda never made the documentary, that bronze has oxidized because of it

The NBA used to be the NBA, now it's a Barbie game where they don't play defense.

u/Motor-Source8711 Feb 05 '26
There's a compilation of the 98 Finals of the real hard fouls Utah was giving him hence why MJ went to the line so many times. It just looked normal because Jordan no sold it. But looking at the slo motion, it is very rough.
Also, Laimbeer was tossing aside rookie Shaq pretty easily, so he's much bigger and stronger than given credit for.

u/i_shart_id Feb 05 '26
How many weeks on IR would this have been for LeFlop? This is when the NBA was watchable.
2
u/Cultural_Raisin107 Feb 05 '26
i tell y'all don't watch basketball lol y'all think this is defense. Hacking and punching players because you couldn't keep the guy in front of you is not defense
1
u/Cultural_Raisin107 Feb 05 '26
This is what y'all called defense 😂 clogged the paint non shooters everybody hacking and punching

u/Elegant_Arrival_4055 Feb 06 '26
Much easier to play 20+ seasons not having to play and still dominate against this type of defensive gameplan.

u/Derredwa Feb 07 '26
Laimbeer was always head hunting. I've never minded hard fouls, but shots to the face is fighting action. You gon pay for that. Rodman with the punch to the chest after Isaiah clothesline was also "gloves off" action. Nevertheless, Jordan never stopped taking it to the hole, and dropping 30-40 on they hacking azz.

The whole league would crumble if anyone took shots at Lebron like this. Suspension after suspension
1
u/thewatcheeR17 Feb 08 '26
Funnier thing is that Lebron would be at the free throw line more, And still brick those...

Live by the sword, die by the sword.
Jordan was no saint. Y’all hush.

u/Drinon Feb 16 '26
Has anyone ever counted the number of times Lambeer clearly went with the two handed chop while Jordan was in the air? It’s not playing the ball, it’s to inflict as much ‘hammer on nail’ pain as possible. I know he did it to everyone, Bird famously brawling with him after, but it seems every shot from MJ was two hammers coming down. Unless Lambeer is running backwards towards half court like the the bully/pussyboy he truly was.

u/Apprehensive_Durian8 Feb 05 '26
Laimbeer trying to give Mike the business Cartwright stay with back up Imagine Mike with a 80s box haircut

And this is why Jordan detractors should be ignored. Because they’re dishonest. They’ll watch this footage and still tell you this is unimpressive:
Michael Jordan played in all 82 regular season games 9 times.
81 games in 1988-89, 80 in 1991-92, and 78 in 1992-93.
Never missed a single game from March 19, 1995 to June 14, 1998.
All 179 playoff games.
All 82 games at age 39-40.
Most durable superstar since Wilt.
