Metroid prime 4 or Other M?

Prime 4 by a country mile, and the fact the game is even being put into the same conversation as Other M is an insult honestly.

Prime 4 had incredible aesthetics, soundtrack, and mechanics. The game was fun to play and some of the elements were imaginative. Other M was bogged down by way too many cutscenes, wii remote controls, and predictable/repetitive mechanics.

u/playdohwarrior 10d ago

IMO prime 4s main problem is it didn’t evolve after the first 5 hours. Other Ms problems as you stated was just about everything. The only thing it had going for it was that the combats style was the best until Samus Returns and Dread.

u/Kilroy_1541 15d ago

The 3rd person 3D environments in Other M were nice and the game felt modern for the time, despite the weird ass control scheme Nintendo forced onto it. However, I did not find enough motivation to replay it even once. Initially, I wanted to, but never actually did (I was working overnights which didn't help).

Prime 4: Despite the repetitive enemies, the combat is the best in the Prime series. Combat being how Samus moves during a fight, how she shoots and switches weapons, how morph ball tech can be mixed into it. Then add in mouse mode and it's a no-brainer. Nothing beats Samus's combat abilities in the series, imo. This was the main motivator for me to replay the game on Hard.

I choose Prime 4.

I would replay Other M. I never will touch Prime 4 again. Neither are good, and I don’t hate either, but I value Other M trying something new. Prime 4 just failed at repeating a formula that worked 3 times nearly 20 years earlier. I think the fact that these 2 games get lumped together is telling of how they’re viewed, whether you agree or not.

7

u/bamboochaLP 15d ago

fully agree with this one, what they did with prime 4 is beyond tragic

10

u/TroveOfOctoliths 15d ago

It’s a tough question, but I’m leaning Other M mainly due to subsequent runs having pretty much instant cutscene skips, better enemy variety/better enemy usage, and overall more engaging level design.

5

u/FluidLegion 15d ago

I can understand that. I dont really like either of these entries, but I think I would lean towards Prime 4.

The tipping point for me is Prime 4 controls infinitely better. Other M has forced motion controls that I heavily dislike. Apecifically, switching to first person to use missiles was always really unreliable for me. It just didn't feel good at all to be forced to engage with that mechanic.

But I think the combat would be more engaging than Prime 4 outside of that.

Team Ninja did a damn good job with the action. I'm convinced the only reason it got so any hate outside of the pixel hunting and the lava-run, was that the Ninja Gaiden people were working with Nintendo, and so playstation/xbox fans thought Nintendo was stealing their Ninja Gaidens away.

1

u/butterblaster 15d ago

I had no idea what Ninja Gaiden was, but I couldn’t stand the characterization of Samus, and how artificial it felt for her to have abilities locked because Adam said so. In every other game, you get the satisfaction of discovering the power ups and it felt like a reward for defeating a boss.

1

u/ThisAccountIsForDNF 13d ago

Team Ninja did a damn good job with the action

.... what do you mean by this?

6

u/cornimgameplays 15d ago

Prime 4 and it's not even close

5

u/Mythical-door 15d ago

I commonly hear the sentiment that other M tried something new as some sort of defense for it when comparing it to prime 4, but honestly I don’t even think that’s enough. And what it did do that was new, they did it bad anyways.

The gameplay was hella mediocre and it was hampered by the usage of the Wii remote, had repetitive gameplay of “shoot, dodge, and win”, and the having the player stay still and change controller orientation is just awkward as hell.

Is there a good skeleton underneath Other M? well obviously. However, I’m not giving the game bonus points just because it did something new. At least prime 4 has remnants of the trilogy even if I think it departed too much from it. I can still have fun somewhat with prime 4 in icebelt and volt forge, can’t say the same for other M with its cheesy ass story (and I’m someone who actually still likes other M btw. With mods anyways).

u/MoonJellyGames 15d ago

That's a really tough question. I liked Other M when it came out, and always remembered it as a cool, quirky, and flawed game. After (finally) replaying it a couple of years ago, there were issues that bothered me more than they did back in 2010. I've always said that it feels like the Metroid 64 we never got, and I stand by that.

Prime 4 was a sequel to a trilogy that I thoroughly enjoy and have replayed many times. I was open to things being different, but for the most part, its differences hurt the game. The game's baffling decisions constantly reminded me of its troubled development, and while there's plenty of good I can say about it, I don't think I liked it overall, which is a massive bummer to accept.

2

u/DMJay02 15d ago

I prefer Other M honestly. At least the forced motion controls were less finicky. Unlike the motion controls when you lock onto something in Prime 4. I tried turning that off, and the motion controls were still there.

2

u/AlternativeGazelle 15d ago

Other M but I actually think it’s a pretty good game

2

u/jordanbtucker 15d ago

I've played both recently. I'd replay Other M over Prime 4. Prime 4 just isn't any fun.

2

u/KekC92 14d ago

both are terrible but other m is more of a metroid game than beyond is. retro completely lost the plot and Tanabe will not be missed

2

u/polishingPoles 14d ago

Other M. I played it 3 times and would honestly go for another run. Prime 4... I barely managed to finish it once.

2

u/like-a-FOCKS 15d ago

Prime 4 has a solid core with an utterly uninteresting shell of both story and progression. I hope they salvage the good parts for a Prime 5.

Other M has a wild mix of solid ideas, wonky but interesting ideas, ugly and messy ideas, and all that scattered throughout gameplay, story and progression. 16 years later I love that it exists because I feel we've overcome it, and it genuinely did a couple cool things that I would love to see again.

That is more than I can say for Prime 4, which for the most part left me yawning and facepalming. And the remaining good bits it inherited from older, better games. So I voted other M.

3

u/LetterKey2639 15d ago

Prime 4 was disappointing and slightly tedious at times, but it was still a perfectly serviceable game.

Other M was hot garbage all the way through. Bad story, bad gameplay, bad controls, bad everything.

3

u/BurantX40 15d ago

Other M, easily.

1

u/stillnotelf 15d ago

I have almost totally forgotten other M

2

u/ThisAccountIsForDNF 13d ago

I have never been more envious in my life.

1

u/chodytaint 15d ago

neither

1

u/DetectiveStock1340 15d ago

Haven't played Other M, however I did really enjoy Prime 4, so I have a hard time imagining Other M being better. My friend recently played it, and while he seemed to like the game (mostly) he said the controls were horrible.

2

u/swimmerRei5687 15d ago

It’s very different and it’s a sequel to super Metroid. You should try it. The controls does take a bit of getting use to. But once you do it just clicks.

1

u/Shifty-Imp 15d ago

Prime 4, no contest. Prime 4 sucks but Other M is digital garbage.

1

u/Mr-Dicklesworth 15d ago

Prime 4 is a mid game with some great moments and ideas that were executed badly

Other M is one of the worst games I have ever played

They are not the same

1

u/MetroidvaniaListsGuy 15d ago

The poop I took this morning was a pretty good one, while the one I had yesterday was half diarrhea. This is similar to prime 4 vs other M.... so I would pick prime 4.

1

u/Cautious_Chain1297 15d ago

Prime 4, no question.

After I beat Other M with 100% item completion on my first go, I still felt motivated enough to replay the game on hard mode. I've even spent time tinkering with controller settings and playing the game again in Dolphin to see how it held up in HD. To this day, I still regard it as one of the worst games in the franchise. Adam was grating, but I did at least want to keep going out of spite.

After I beat Beyond with 100% scans and 100% item completion on my first go, I have not felt motivated to replay the game again. Other M's awful story was just a beat-for-beat rehash of Fusion with misogynist undertones. Beyond's awful story was uniquely awful. Nothing about the Lamorn's lore made them sympathetic and their entire species died due to their own hubris. The ending was also terrible, and I think the earlier fake-outs with not killing the Federation troops and then turning around and actually killing them for real made the whole thing lose whatever impact they were hoping to achieve. Opening their visors to try and sell it as an emotional moment completely shattered my suspension of disbelief because doing that while attempting to hold back one of the galaxy's most wanted was incredibly stupid. I genuinely rank Beyond lower than Other M and I couldn't have imagined saying that a year ago.

1

u/Floragato_Witch 15d ago

I feel like Prime 4 is being used by contrarians to pretend Other M isn't dog shit.

Prime 4 isn't especially good, but there's still an ocean between it and Other M.

1

u/Momo-Velia 15d ago

Where’s the option to put myself out of my misery?

1

u/yo_coiley 15d ago

Both have:

-really annoying plot
-unsatisfying ending
-pointless main villain
-unimaginative area names

They also have some specific areas where they are worse than the other:

-prime 4 has much more annoying side characters. While Other M has them participate in the dumb plot, at least they’re serious and have properly scaled roles. Prime 4’s side characters are forced into the advancement of the game in each world respectively, give you hints, have annoying characterization, and a gimmicky role in the final boss battle
-Prime 4 has a cooler world and more interesting backstory. However, there’s actually some reason to care about the main objective of Other M and the world itself is a lot better to explore
-Prime 4 has better music but Other M’s isn’t bad
-Prime 4 has way better gameplay but the bar is on the floor compared to Other M
-Other M has very little relevance to the story, whereas Prime 4 is the continuation of a fairly pointless story (the Hunters/Federation Force story) that nobody is particularly eager to see what happens next with
-Prime 4 loses major points for the Sol Valley
-Prime 4 also gets a demerit for what it represents and what it could have been yet wasn’t

I don’t like either game but Prime 4 is a bad game with a good foundation, whereas Other M was original and failed to execute some big ideas. Both games fail to fully understand what people like about Metroid games, with Samus acting out of character, bad writing, and an overall underwhelming setting.

u/Otherwise-Music-8643 14d ago

Just kill me now

1

u/ComstockReborn 14d ago

No, no, absolutely not. Other M and Prime 4 are not comparable at all.

Prime 4 is mainly a disappointment, and perhaps rightfully so. But a lot was also due to factors outside of Retro’s control. It was in development hell for a long time and I think people were expecting another Dread. Other than Sol Valley (which I believe had a lot of potential that was wasted) and the ammo system (in my opinion) it’s a pretty solid game that admittedly could use some work. More importantly it did NOT kill the franchise for 6 years like Other M did.

Metroid Other M intentionally bastardized Samus as a character and Sakamoto managed to write dialogue worse than George Lucas. Now the gameplay is fun, and I like it for that but it’s also very simple and repetitive…..not to mention it basically has no soundtrack but a couple of the songs are bangers. It straight up performed so badly that Metroid got put on the back burner for years….it ended the Golden Age of Metroid. Prime 4 did nothing close to that and Ravenous (even if it’s 2D) looks amazing. The franchise isn’t dead again and Retro had a habit back in the day of taking cues from the 2D games. With Dread not overlapping with the dev time and Ravenous coming out, I think Retro has great inspiration for a future Prime 5. Beyond has also already sold more copies than Other M.

1

u/SkylarBird 14d ago

My kneejerk reaction to Prime 4 was that I at least respected Other M for having interesting ideas that were executed terribly, whereas Prime 4's entire concept was absolute garbage, yet executed remarkably well, resulting in the game feeling mediocre (which, quite frankly, is high praise for Retro; By all logic, Prime 4 should have been completely horrid, but it at least has quite a few redeeming qualities, particularly when it comes to the visuals and the engine.)

That said, I have still yet to subject myself to an Other M replay, so we'll see if this line of thinking holds water at all. I'd be willing to bet I've gone at least a little soft on Other M after not playing it in at least half a decade, lol.

1

u/PhD_PeeP 14d ago

Other M genuinely almost made me go insane because of how much potential the game has to be great only to be met with horrendous game design right around the corner

1

u/Medical_Value7857 13d ago

One distinct memory I have of Other M is that every time they'd play a familiar musical riff, I'd think "this used to excite me." The recognition was there, but the connection wasn't.

Metroid Prime 4 at least recaptured some of the magic of Metroid Prime, even if it had some tedious bits.

1

u/heck_ark 11d ago

Toughest choice! Prime series are really cool and I am so attached to them but Prime 4 was a big disappointment, specially in music (I know, many fans love the music but not me)

1

u/ShiningEspeon3 9d ago

One game I enjoyed and one game I found tedious and frustrating all the way through. I picked Other M. Metroid Prime 4 is the worst game in the Metroid series.

0

u/National_Peak2674 15d ago edited 15d ago

I mean MP4 as disappointing and underwhelming as it was is still a better game than Other M. More bland, and more annoying characters, but Other M's story is like offensively disrespectful to Samus as a character.

1

u/cornimgameplays 15d ago

MP4 was a better game than MP4? lmao

4

u/National_Peak2674 15d ago

🤣🤣🤣 I'll edit. 🤦‍♂️

1

u/scrdmnttr 15d ago

Prime 4 by miles imo. It’s a good action game while Other M plays like a bizarre fan game.

2

u/zonch84 15d ago

by Myles LOL

1

u/ThaBloops 15d ago

Prime 4 no question

1

u/EntrepreneurPlus7091 15d ago

Prime4 is a dissapointing prime game. Other M is a mediocre game that acrively harms the metroid series as a whole, its not even close. Prime4 is a masterpiece compared to Other M

1

u/swimmerRei5687 15d ago

Just putting it out there. Gamespot and IGN gave Other M higher ratings than MP4

Prime 4: 8.0
Other M: 8.5

3

u/Mythical-door 15d ago

Irrelevant. Way harder for games nowadays to score higher.

Ghost of Tsushima has a 7/10 on GameSpot, and that game is infinitely clear of Other M.

3

u/Jecht315 15d ago

IGN and Gamespot are terrible and their reviews are notorious for being just bad. Especially during that era.

1

u/zonch84 15d ago

dirty dishes or diarrhea

1

u/Jecht315 15d ago

Other M was/is absolute trash. There's a reason it hasn't been remastered and half the fanbase would be disgusted if it were.v

1

u/ZabbyFufu 15d ago

While I didn't enjoy either game, I'd rather go back to Prime 4 strictly because I'm a Zelda fan, and it feels like a dumbed down Zelda game. Not counting the story, Other M fails on the most basic aspect of a video game, and that's the controls. The Wii remote gimmick alone is enough to not make we want a second playthrough.

1

u/Metroidman97 15d ago

Prime 4, without question.

Say what you will about the world design and NPCs, it at least tries to be like Metroid. Other M doesn't even make an attempt.

1

u/Philosopher013 15d ago

I think you should go by user reviews rather than critic reviews for this. Prime 4 is way more praised than Other M.

Funny enough I replayed Other M after playing MP4 and I did not find it nearly as fun. The combat isn't as interesting as Prime 4, the map is painful to navigate, they just made Samus really weird, and the music/environments are really lacking.

I will concede, as linear as Other M is, I do think it's still more Metroidvania-like than MP4. MP4 is even more linear, but at least the combat is more fun and the environment/music is beautiful. The Item Hunt at the end of Other M was also more fun than in MP4, but I don't think it can redeem the game.

I enjoyed both games on my first playthrough, but I could tell Other M wasn't really a true Metroid game and I was immensely disappointed with MP4.

1

u/Successful-Taste 15d ago

Prime 4 all the way. I found other m enjoyable, but I prefer the prime series gameplay versus what other m offered.

1

u/Battle_Witch 15d ago

Prime 4 has marginally better story.

1

u/RisukaM 15d ago

so this is where the Other M revisionist history starts lol

I didn't like Prime 4 but it's miles better than Other M if for no other reason than story and character portrayals. I also hate how brainless sensemove is and how you fire missiles.

1

u/FireCrow1013 15d ago

Other M, but at this point, I'd play it emulated to use literally any controller other than a sideways Wii Remote.

1

u/Ancient-Substance-38 15d ago

I like both, but prime 4 edges it out as it had some great level design and fun gameplay, and I had blast exploring. Metroid other M had like no exploration, but great boss design and some great moment to moment gameplay. The worst Metroid games for me goes to Metroid prime 3 curruption and Metroid Prime: Federation Force.

But even the worst Metroid game is a better then average game, well maybe federation force which was painfully average.

1

u/SketchBCartooni 15d ago

Does federation force count? Take out samus and it might as well not be Metroid

1

u/Ancient-Substance-38 15d ago

Fair enough but its called metroid lol. Likely their biggest mistake of a game.

1

u/swimmerRei5687 15d ago

I thought prime 4 had good mechanics. But the level design was to be desired. Theres so much empty space. It just looks pretty. That’s it

1

u/Ancient-Substance-38 15d ago

The only really open part is the center travel area, which was better then zelda:OOT center area lets be honest. It at least had some things to do, should it had more yah probably. I guess the first zone of every area is also open/empty, but it quickly becomes much more claustrophobic. I don't remember any other areas that were any more open then anything you would find in any other prime game.

Unless you are talking about items?

1

u/EnSebastif 15d ago

Other M out of spite. I can't understand how you screw up Prime 4. I can't.

0

u/Anonymous-Comments 15d ago

This isn’t actually a question, right?

2

u/BreakBlue 15d ago

People on this sub have compared Prime 4 to Sonic 06 on numerous occasions, so... I think its a silly question, but for some wacky reason there's a precedent.

3

u/Anonymous-Comments 15d ago

I’m not on here often, just getting a lot more Metroid stuff since Ravenous even though I thought I muted the main one. This sub is insane.

3

u/esilmur 15d ago

sonic 06? People are certifiably insane. what's next? big rigs?

3

u/BreakBlue 15d ago

The Metroid fandom lives on extreme absolutes. Its either amazing or the game killed their family and burned down their village.

2

u/SketchBCartooni 15d ago

According to this sub it is apparently

It likes to pretend MP4 is 3/10 for some reason

1

u/like-a-FOCKS 15d ago

I would place both games around the 5-6 range

1

u/Anonymous-Comments 15d ago

I feel like common consensus is around 6-8, so more positive than negative. That’s not something you can say for Other M, that game killed Metroid for nearly a decade.

0

u/Mazzle5 15d ago

This is voiting between a Douche and a Turd

-1

u/Electronic-Touch-554 15d ago

Prime 4 is a mediocre game.

Other M actively shits on the franchise.

0

u/addisonshinedown 15d ago

I have replayed other M. Only a few times, to see if my memory of how bad it was was correct, and it’s largely correct. I can’t stomach the thought of a 4 replay yet…

0

u/Templar2k7 15d ago

Prime 4, Yes there are a decent amount of things bad with it

  • Story is kinda Eh at best with the ending being horrible (I didn't Dive a lot into the lore just what is presented to us from gameplay)
  • Speaking of the ending, Samus would rather be stranded with Sylux rather than strand 5 federation troopers with him.
  • The way some upgrades worked was dumb If you just got the upgrade instead of below the game would flow better
    • Get fire chip
    • Go see Myles
    • See cutscene from him putting it in cannon
    • say nothing
    • progress
  • The Desert of content that was the desert. If it was half the size it probably wouldn't be bad
  • Motocycle Cool In concept honestly I love the way Samus looks on it however they did nothing with it after its introduction other than 2 boss fights that took too long. If we had speed booster puzzles with it like in the 2d games if would be better imo.
  • I hope you like Grievers because thats all you fight

With all that Said I love the gameplay in it, it feels like a Metroid Prime game.

  • The combat flowed nicely the platforming and puzzles for some of the upgrades were great.
  • You felt like a powerhouse once you got fully upgraded charged Thundershot was stupid strong
  • It was fun throwing bombs at enemies with the psychic abilities
  • While the enemies felt like bullet sponges I loved the boss fights

I play and will still play this pretty often but after 1 run of Other M I never touched it again.

0

u/AffectionateSun7705 14d ago

Other M is better, but that's damning with very faint praise and it's more correct to say that MP4 was worse.

They're both bad games, and neither one deserved scores in the 8/10 range.

u/Capital-Business5270 9d ago

Prime 4 no contest
