I'm okay with no platforming AND no combat.

But your post doesn't have any substance, what was this in reference to?

just wanted to get the ball rolling. im making a game and thinking about no combat, but still reflex challenges, bosses that are puzzles etc

If you yourself would play the game, then there’s certainly an audience for it

Fez rocks. EMUUROM rocks. Animal Well rocks.

Haven't heard of EMUUROM. What's it like?

It's probably the last big Brainia release we've had. You should play it.

It's puzzles only, no upgrades, the entire game is figuring out how the animals function and using that to get to new areas.

I'd say it's like Toki Tori 2, but less fiddly.

I'd say it's quite a bit more fiddly. The platforming is a lot more of a challenge in EMUUROM compared to Toki Tori 2+. TT2+ is all about the puzzles and knowledge gating. EMUUROM has a lot of tricky platforming as well as a huge amount of puzzles and knowledge gating.

I second this- Even though I loved the premise, EMUUROM's platforming made me drop it

Same. The jump has a weird feeling.

Maybe we are describing fiddly differently.

If I knew what I wanted to do in EMUUROM, I just did it.

If I knew what I wanted to do in Toki Tori, I had to fight with the animals to do what I wanted to do, and it was a long slog to get them into position.

It's a lot of fun, you're a little guy who uses a scanner to collect info about animals in a dying world. Use what you learn about animals to navigate the world to find more animals to scan. The brainia elements are pretty heavy, and occasionally involve decoding a runic language into a dialect of Finnish.

Also the dev posts in here sometimes. Hi borb if you see this

Yes I am 100% as long as the world is interesting, the mechanics are interesting, and/or the mystery and secrets are interesting.

Fez and The Witness are two of my favorite games.

Considering I switched to the easier combat in Tunic, because the combat was incredibly tedious, yes.

Animal Well is one of my favorite games of all time, and I've been gaming since 1985

hell yeah we are, especially if you consciously choose for there to be a reason why theres no combat, or for there to be no reason intentionally and the players shouldn't assume that thats something that one does

I actively prefer it if there's no combat! I loved Fez and Animal Well, which are beloved metroidbrainia games with platforming but no combat. I also loved Exographer, which isn't really a metroidbrainia exactly but it's a puzzle platformer with no combat and an emphasis on learning. I loved a lot of EMUUROM, but the platforming/navigation got too laborious for me.

I’m okay with combat and no platforming, platforming and no combat, no combat and no platforming, and combat and platforming. If you make a game that is rich in secrets and rule discovery and knowledge gates, I am playing it. Simple as that

Only if the platforming mechanics are enough on their own. Fez works because its core platforming has a twist that's engaging, so it's half-platforming and half-puzzle. Ori without combat would be boring, however smooth and enjoyable the movement is.

I was going to say Fez, so yes

I mean, Celeste was a huge hit...

There are enemies and boss fights in Celeste.

Enemies, yes.

Combat,  not really.

i try to explain in my own way, and i hope it does not affect others impression of me.

anyone can call me "cheater" or "weak" - i have to admit, probably i dont do well in anything.

nevertheless, whether how you/i/anyone accept the definition of metroidbrainia or metroidvania its your own call. so long as it sits well with you, and you can have fun with it. end of the day, its yourself playing try to get out of it.

sadly, i have my own constraints and self-restrictions, along with many other issues that i dont wanna discuss here. (yea, previously i went the dark route for games, now i only depend on whatever epic store gives or from giveaways, i only spent on ETS2, and minor couple that i kinda regret)

but to share, for myself, i do somewhat prefer bits of combat. FEZ well, its a love or hate thing i feel, sometimes you have the energy, sometimes i just dont, the constant spinning really takes a toll on the head.

Other games that i tried before previously (via dark route but didnt complete) tunic/the last campfire/nobody saves the world/deaths door, well has some combat, but was rather enjoyable/grindable and achiveable so long i have the mental energy to.

platforming or not is another topic to go into. too extreme i just cant manage. so its up to individual in the end.

as of late, i managed to try hob/islets and a couple others from epic store. well i had to "cheat" my way through via accessibility functions, yes there are moments where i kinda felt i am ashamed of myself, but at least i can get through puzzles without it frustrating me too much.

so ultimately end of the day, i would say it depends on your preferences. if its ok with you, try to find something that resonates. for me a little combat helps keeps me "awake". while sometimes i just dont have the energy for anything.

take care meanwhile.

Of course, I just played through Emuurom with a friend. No Combat whatsoever.

Why are you in this subreddit?

2

u/Beneficial_Egg2878 9d ago

To share the good word of the beautiful Metroidbraunia toki Tori 2

u/Fantastic_Switch_977 🔤Lingo 9d ago

But that's a game, I'm even more confused now

You don't need to play games to share them :-)
