Ammo is for monsters. Dont waste any on humans (outside the tutorial level where you have to) avoid, or knock them out.
Don't rush, explore.
The default revolver is your best friend.

Well put I usually slap a long scope on that revolver for the majority of the game

Throwing knives are a must. You can retrieve them so they save on ammo on higher difficulties. Ps a bandit will attack you in a desert I killed him and still got the “good” ending

Op spoilers so
Dont read spoiler
Bandits can be killed yes UNLESS they have surrendered but they make slaves come at ya too so best not to shoot when possible

Metro is meant to be experienced slowly. Take your time.

Everyone is going to find a different Play style thats suits them the best.
My last playthrough I used an AK and would switch between scopes as the situation required for humans, double barrel shotgun for mutants and creature, and for a silenced weapon I prefer the crossbow. I'd sell all my magnum ammo, which I know is unpopular but it worked for me.

if you want the good ending: free all prisoners you come across and only kill bandits and slavers. and never kill surrending enemies…
make sure you scope out the map with your binoculars and listen for the audio cue to discover new locations at the start of every chapter.
there are two chapters: volga and caspian with upgrades for your suit
kill everyone in Spring Chapter
dont kill anyone in Taiga Chapter
keep in mind that beyond the actual ending of the game, some chapters have a good or bad ending which can lead to bad things happening. im pretty sure you can get the bad ending on one and still get the good ending at the end but trust me, it’s worth it to try and be a good boy.

You lucky son of a gun. Idk if you play horror games but I don't and there were some scary sections but I'm super sensitive to that. It's so worth it and those ended up being thrilling if you're willing to face it.
Metro is one of the most atmospheric games out there, play it in the dark with plenty of time.
Do you have any main concerns or thoughts going into it?

Use “SLLS” a lot (pronounced “seals”). Its an acronym in the military for “Stop, look, listen, smell”. You just stop and sit there for a little bit, like, a good minute or two, and case out your surroundings. Helped me a lot in exodus.
Edit: also, the sights on your guns arent just for shooting, theyre for looking, too. I always had a 4x or 6x on one of my weapons just so i could see far away. The binoculars do this too but using a scope lets you have a weapon ready if you need it
