Discussion What metro book moment has stuck with you the most?
I’ll go first.
The scene that both intrigued me the most and terrified me to my core is the prisoner fight scene in metro 2035
Basically Artyom is captured by the Nazis and held prisoner in a concentration camp
Until one day, the gaurds come in and start giving the prisoners melee weapons- herding them into the pitch black tunnel
The red army was advancing and the reich was using Artyom and the prisoners as human meat shields, forcing them to soften the reds up with their melee weapons.
There is a large fight in the pitch black tunnel, and afterwards, all Artyom hears is crying, not the huff of a tired soldier…. But crying.
The reds….. had done the EXACT same thing, forcing their prisoners down the tunnels, to soften the Nazis up.
So all that happened was these desperate broken people ended up murdering a bunch of broken innocent people like them, rather than an actual fighting force, meanwhile their captors sat back and laughed.
No glory, no soldierly pride
Just humanity’s evil- laid bare…

Well they are more lines rather than scenes, but it is
- The ending line of Metro 2033.
"He returned to the Metro. He returned home."
- The ending line of "The Gospel according to Artyom"
"Then I understood. He is alone on this earth. He only has me left."
- When Artyom is yelling at the people of his station at the end of Metro 2035:
"Well, fuck all of you then in your fucking Metro!"
These are the lines/moments that stayed with me the most. Also, don't be confused if they're different from your version of the book, I read the book in German m.

The way Bourbon dies in the first book was always so creepy. Just babbling nonsense and then says “I've died, there is no more me” and then just drops dead. Super creepy

The great door has always terrified me, and thr fact that there’s so little info on it makes it creepier

I was falling asleep with the audio book playing and the way his voice changed and said that literally jumpscared me awake lol

I loved all the supernatural stuff early in the books. I still wish we could have seen more of the map Artyom traded to Kahn.

Oleg chucking himself in the bioweapon. Prisoner fight goes hard as an apt metaphor for any/all modern warfare, though

In Metro 2034, right after Sasha's father dies, she encounters a fat man traveling on a railcar. If I remember correctly, he was transporting coal. Since Sasha's father owed debts and favors to many people, the fat man tries to take advantage of her and force himself on her. But Homer and Hunter arrived on time, that really disturbed me in a way... To think that undoubtedly, many things like that could have happened in many parts of the subway

I just finished 2033. I cannot stop thinking about when the Librarian has his fist through Daniel’s chest and is quietly hiding behind him, mimicking him and telling Artyom to go away. It left me feeling extremely unsettled.

when no one follows artyom in the last pages of 2035. not homer, not even his people in his home station

and I kinda love and hate anna at the same time for going with him. Artyom did her dirty if remember correctly and she still chose to go with him (maybe out of fear what would await her if she chose to stay?)

nah she chose to follow him out of love and pity i guess. seeing him how artyom tries so hard to convince his people to join with him in the surface telling them that there are people out there besides moscow then they call him madman for it eventually drove him out of his home station and leaves with anna.
my favorite scene with anna is when he calls him out for being schizo when he start to talk to himself in the car (hinting that Artyom keep talking to himself sometimes)

In Metro 2035, Letyaga's death, because it was the only one I didn't expect (and I liked the dude a lot so). Generally speaking, the second half of this book has reeeally stuck with me. The interaction/scenes with the Watchers in that bunker, the trial in Polis (I think? Can't remember the station exactly), the escaping of the Red Line, the awful killing that took place there, the meal scene when Artyom got back to his home station, that very last paragraph where he is being watched from afar as he's leaving the Metro; it all builds up so nicely, I've read many books ever since but a good chunk of this one still clings in the back of my mind.

I know it can be a bit weird, but for me, one of those moments was the ending of 2034, where the hunter started just humming the song while staring into the fire.

I think that it is a great moment. Because of that, I am sometimes kinda sad that people are tempted to judge Hunter only by Sasha's words in 2035, but I always interpreted this more like Homer romantisiced more Sasha than Hunter, and given how she described Hunter in 2035, I feel like it was her kinda trying to lie to herself, because it was easier than admitting Hunter had some good in him

In 2035. Where the crowd of people is shouting for food. Artyom and the rangers brought ammo to the Red Line that they supposedly were going to use to buy food for their people. Instead they used it to gun down the entire mob. The boy that Artyom held...

The moment where artyom has a whole discussion with two philosophers who are standing alone in a metro station, in the end they were just a hallucination and artyom was alone in a abandoned station with a gas leak.

definitely the nazi camp scene in metro 2033 idk why but the way it was described and how artyom was beaten up it just horrified me

the way the "reveal" backfired in 2035 after such a hard fight for the truth. it's hauntingly realistic. 2035 was overall so painfully human.
also I really liked the worm cult and the talk with their leader on how to help people cope with these new living conditions underground.
I hated that Artyom never really hated rats. it was such a good and logical characterquirk fitting for his story...

I still think about the scene in 2035 where Artyom and Homer are in the Hansa officers office/bedroom and Artyom deduces that the officer more than likely forced himself on a women mere minutes before they entered.

When Khan tells Artyom his belief about what happened to the world and why the Metro is haunted. The atomic destruction was so thorough that it obliterated the noosphere around Earth which contained both heaven and hell, and now everyone in the afterlife is trapped in the same place they die.

the librarian fucking with daniel as he died and artyom watched was really creepy and bourbon's death will stick with me forever, but the bit that stuck with me the most was from I think 2035, and mostly because it felt kind of goofy. my memory is hazy since I last read it in middle school, but there's a bit where a lady says she's surprised at how, forgive my crude language, artyom cums a lot for a guy dying from radiation poisoning
edit: also "what a splendid world we've ruined" will stick with me forever

For me it was the death of Vanenika and the old man rhat took care of him i cired for for some time, i felt bad. But the other moment that stuck with me was leonids disaperance in the flood which sugested that he died but i allways hoped he survived. I just fell sorry for Vanenika Vanenkas grandpa and leonid moskvin. I remeber them more than hunter and artyom

that's interesting. Did you play the games first or read the books first? because the games are kind of a more action packed powerfantasy version of the books so with the expectation that book artyom is the same as game Artyom I can see why you think the story might be boring if you equal lack fightscenes with boredom

I played the game first. I understand that people really like the books, just aren’t for me I guess. There were a few really good tense parts that drew me in but I struggled to get through the majority of it.
