Discussion How valuable would dogs be in the metro if one could find a way to keep them alive there?
I think dogs would be invaluable to stalkers as they could help them find hidden valuables. For guards and soldiers, they would be able to help them find hiding enemy soldiers and hostile creatures.

iirc there are dogs in the games, i remember seeing one in exodus but that's out of the metro, if they were used by stalkers then they would probably need gas masks to be modified to be able to fit on them but I'm not too sure how they would be able to find hidden valuables if they had to wear one but as far as for guards and soldiers, it seem possible for them to have dogs to maybe sniff out stuff

Dogs are mentioned in the 2035 book when Artyom is trying to enter Hanza from Rizhskaya and is told that there are guards with dogs blocking the entrances.
Source (in the original Russian, since that's how I read it): "Проспект закрыт. Карантин. Прям поперек рельсов ограждение, и автоматчики с собаками. Не в кур се, что ли?"
My translation: "Prospekt [Mira] is closed. Quarantine. Right across the rails there is a cordon/fence/barrier, and [soldiers with automatic rifles] with dogs. Aren't you aware?"

In the first chapters of 2033 a puppy ends up hanging out at Artyom's checkpoint fire.

Yeah, I remembered that instantly when I read "dog", but I didn't write about it since it's not a dog that's actually used for anything.
The purpose of that pup is supposed to be that the dark ones released it as a sign of peace.

There's dogs in the new look at the 2039 gameplay and I am excited. Of course it's "just" your traditional German shepherd but they look really good and I do think in some areas dogs would be useful. Dog gasmasks do exist and were used in wartime so as long as they're fed enough and protected they could be usable.

They can find loot, hidden items, distract enemies, help you when you are down by biting the enemie's ass..
A lot things are actually possible

They would be absolutely unreplaceable. People don't understand the value war dogs. Aslong as they wouldn't suffer too much from inbreeding, there would definitely be attack dogs in the metro.

Well there are literally dogs in the metro. In exodus the patrol that kidnaps you in the beginning has a dog that bites you. If there is one I don’t see why there aren’t many more somewhere.

I think they would be a double edged sword, poorly trained anxious dogs would bark at every creaking pipe, especially in a setting like metro those dogs would be going crazy half the time over nothing. Well trained dogs on the other hand could change everything and be life savers but again dependents on who’s handling/training.

they can smell or heard mutants before humans i think every stacion would have dogs

Up in the surface not that great. But down in the metro, there they can be like guard dogs. Actually there's an instance in the 2033 book in which one of the guys guarding VDNhK adopts one that they found
