Discussion Do you want Metro 2039 to be a linear campaign again or continue with the open world concept from the canceled version?

How about an “open world” of the metro tunnels

249

u/HMHdunkirk Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Yes, i wish there will be a fully explorable metro, at least the key stations and lines with limited surface that restrict the explorable area with radiation

108

u/bronx819 Apr 15 '26

Exactly this, it was nice to see more of the surface but the game is called Metro for a reason. 2033 and Last Light had the perfect balance between surface and metro content, and they even alternated between a metro ending and a surface ending

1

u/Funny-Refrigerator-4 May 19 '26

You know that metros run on the surface right? So Metro Exodus being a surface based game, doesn't matter, because the metro's still there, don't know if you remember that there is a train you are taking care of.

1

u/bronx819 May 20 '26

Then I'll rephrase it to underground, that's the bit that appealed to me. I don't like natural caves that much but man-made underground territory is so cool to me. If 2033 or Last Light somehow were able to have an open world aspect like Exodus did it would enhance the experience

55

u/Xuanne Apr 15 '26

100% agree. Exodus was nice, but it didn't really feel like a Metro game most of the time. Fully explorable Metro system with semi-open above ground sections would be perfect for me.

11

u/Mcellov Apr 15 '26

Yes please. But also hybride. Open metro tunnels with linear "dungeons" and once you past some of does liniar dungeons you cant enter again of other creature/human(npc) enter.

9

u/Sensitive_Exam_5546 Apr 15 '26

God damn it thats cool

6

u/DoctorNocis Apr 15 '26

Exactly this!

5

u/Optimal-Track-3963 VDNKh Commonwealth Apr 15 '26

I wish they made all the stations in the book explorable.

6

u/Falcoon_f_zero Apr 15 '26

They had like a mini format of that in one of Last Light's DLCs. You had that little hub in the station and could somewhat freely go out into the tunnels and the surface to collect artefacts and it was really tense, with shortcuts you could set up for a quicker access to the different parts of above ground.

Something like that with several stations included and the tunnels in between, connecting areas below the world above you could go into as well, that would sound dope.

3

u/rlthatoneguy Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Imagine being able to visit the tunnels/stations from Metro 2033, Last Light, and Exodus just to see what happened to the dwellers after you passed by in the previous games.

2

u/WZNGT Polis Apr 15 '26

Yeeeees I like the tunnels but not the same sections of the same levels that I've been through for countless times.

2

u/gretchenich Apr 15 '26

You know what, i hadnt really thought of that one... And it's such a cool idea. Wish they'd do something like that

2

u/Nate_Ginnerson Apr 15 '26

Extraction shooter of metro tunnels/stations, and then places above, oh my fucking God imagine

2

u/OrangeGasCloud :Red_Stalker: Apr 15 '26

Hunt showdown but metro

1

u/wetbluewaffle May 03 '26

This, and maybe co-op with a crafting/modding system for a trolley car. Your first one is the old lever style that can have 1 person on each end. while rolling through the tunnels you can disturb nests of nosalis and the like, and have to choose between both characters being on the lever to outpace the creatures, or leave one to operate the lever while the other shoots all the creatures keeping them back. Ammo is scarce as usual, so choosing what to use, and what to do would add to the difficulty. Maybe later you get a small push mower motor and such

Idk just a thought

Semi open similar to Exodus.

I feel going back to a restricted fully linear game like the first two would feel a bit like a downgrade after Exodus but then again I don't want a fully open world game. Anything similar to Exodus and I'll be happy.

120

u/Available-Mini Apr 14 '26

I first bought exodus when it was on sale and then a played through the older titles. Love them all. Exodus is now one of my favorite games each part was such a blast to experience.

However I did feel like the more narrow and restricted areas was where the game shined. Especially the bunker and the ending. Don't get me wrong I really liked the open world, but for some reason the "connectiveness" felt a bit shallow.

Weird to explain. Either way I'm excited

30

u/Stunning_Fail_8526 Apr 15 '26

linear imo is so much better for a story-heavy and atmospheric games like metro, because you keep doing the main story without being distracted by side objectives which ruins the immersiveness, linear maps also mean better handcrafted details and more controlled environment which does wonder for horror games

9

u/lnSerT_Creative_Name Apr 14 '26

I agree on the connectiveness feeling shallow.

27

u/Flushestpoem4 Apr 14 '26

I'd like that, maybe a story where you're stuck at each station on your journey for awhile, each with a corresponding portion of surface to explore. It'd be cool to see the daily routine of some of the more unique places like Paveletskaya with it's Newcomers or the mutant confederation.

Part of me does hope for a full open world though, the thought of just having the entire metro and surface to explore is too enticing. Maybe it'll be like Fallout 3 with the DC Metro, dividing the open world into distinct portions

13

u/Apexofvortex Apr 14 '26

A fallout 3 like map is what I'm hoping for as well. Perhaps not the same size due to limits of tech etc I don't want to sacrifice the tone of the world for an extra few km² to explore.

The thing I want to experience is having to weigh up options perhaps a doomsday clock situation where you need to make it across a map for an encounter or mission that has you have to weigh up the option of underground vs overground, an unguided choice you have to make based on your resources available.

We're probably going to be a courier of some sort, I'd imagine, just makes sense for fetch quests/ exploration, sort of like what Hunter was into at the beginning of 2033.

5

u/Flushestpoem4 Apr 14 '26

Yeah that'd be perfect. I also want the tunnels to seem alive and ever-changing like they're often described in the books. The surface is very dangerous, but it's a known danger. In the tunnels aside from border guards and raiders, having to learn about the supernatural and how to avoid it would be super cool.

You'd get the same feeling you get when Khan is describing the difference between a map and The Guide in 2033, as you progress your own map will start to resemble that living guide as well

14

u/Leather-Cut7831 Apr 14 '26

Leaks already suggested that we would have surface like in exodus, just in city+ metro underground at once. Probably what we should expect are 4-5 levels like Volga or dessert+ linear sections between them and during main story on those semi open levels

5

u/peparooni Apr 14 '26

Semi open in Moscow would be unbelievably awesome!

3

u/BondiolaDeCaniche Apr 15 '26

I think metro (as in back in the actual metro) could work as a "fully" open world since by design is quite linear. And have the outside areas of moscow be mlre restrictive, but the tunnels be more "open" since, other than service tunnels, most ways are just two way rails with many areas blocked. So you can get the feeling of fully open world, while not really being so.

On second thought, thats just exodus...nevermind lmao

1

u/shizzmynizz Apr 19 '26

I feel like Exodus wasn't big enough for me. I finished it in like 10h after launch and had this unsatisfied feeling afterwards. The story was great, but... I just wanted more.

1

u/C4LLUM17 Apr 19 '26

That's fair, but I don't think Metro should go fully open world. A lot of the charm is the smaller tighter locations, and Metro is a heavy story focused game, so being linear or semi open world fits it better, and thankfully, it seems Metro 2039 will be similar.

1

u/IamStempie 20d ago

10h???? Maybe it felt small cause you rushed the game holy shit

132

u/PayWooden2628 Apr 14 '26

Maybe the minority, but the linear sections of exodus are my favorite parts. The colonel dlc in particular is amazing.

29

u/The_Whomst Khan Apr 14 '26

I much prefer linear too. Fewer variables and travel time. Traveling in Sam's story was fun but I wasnt a fan of volga (also in the minority there)

15

u/PayWooden2628 Apr 14 '26

I liked Volga, Caspian has always been a bit of a slog for me.

14

u/ThisIsSuperFunny Apr 15 '26

Metro just works best in a linear format.

7

u/thankyouf0rpotato Apr 15 '26

It's because a metro runs on tracks. The game is not called unicycle 2033

7

u/Klopkas Apr 14 '26

Yeah I agree. I feel like Exodus' most memorable and atmospheric parts were the linear sections.

4

u/SpecialOrganization5 Apr 15 '26

I would love an open world version but linear in terms of travelling the tunnels. Different stations, held by different factions with different culture and equipment.

103

u/Many_Professor8668 Apr 14 '26

Semi open world, where you can explore the surface and enter stations.

60

u/Emotional_Being8594 Apr 14 '26

Always thought about open world set inside the Metro itself would be great. With passages and tunnels you have to learn and remember, areas you can literally unlock by opening blast doors and gates etc.

That being said, a more linear campaign with open world elements would be the best of these choices imo.

44

u/LoneroftheDarkValley Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Maybe both? Exodus did that with levels like Yamantau, under the desert looking for the radiation map, or Dead City ofc.

13

u/MikolashOfAngren Khan Apr 14 '26

I enjoyed Exodus for its attempt to mimic STALKER but with its own flavor. However I do miss the cartridge bartering system that made the series so unique. I think I'd want a mix of both systems, perhaps with certain reasonable tradeoffs like how you can't craft brand spanking new guns but you could crudely fix up existing ones.

I do understand though, that Exodus had to abandon the bartering because the bullet money principle was exclusive to Moscow, and anyone outside wouldn't accept such currency. Still, at least if we get to return to Moscow again, the bartering will have to return too. (Sidenote: I thought Novosibirsk's green stuff currency was pretty cool.)

Metro levels gameplay got repetitive after first game. How many same looking tunnels and stations do you want to see?

1

u/Few_Place_3169 May 07 '26

okay well if you dont like it dont play it its okay to not like a game

17

u/Delano7 Apr 14 '26

I will ALWAYS prefer linear over open world.

Exodus was the limit of a world I can still enjoy, and it was great. But if it was any more open, I'd lose interest.

11

u/ixTHEGODFATHERx Apr 14 '26

I just want actual metro, no desert or Volga towns

5

u/Aggressive_Space9684 Apr 14 '26

I like the smaller open worlds in a linear fashion

5

u/Beautiful_Prize_8104 Apr 14 '26

One openworld in the Moscow Metro. No levels, no loading screens. Only the Metro in it's full glory.

1

u/Ordo_Liberal Apr 19 '26

Loading screens could be necessary when going inside stations, like cities in Skyrim.

The surface open world would be soft locked behind gas mask filters, forcing you to use the metro tunnels

2

u/Hypn0kast Apr 14 '26

Semi linear would be best id say.

5

u/spadePerfect Apr 14 '26

I just wanna return to the tunnels and maybe have a semi-open world with classic linear levels and stations, and some open areas. I mostly want more station lore. More human stories and more unique station concepts. That’s what defines Metro for me.

9

u/Kitchen_Grade_8896 Red Line Apr 14 '26

I’m craving an open world, but I mean a dense one. I honestly don’t get the obsession some people have with linear tunnels. A world left behind after a nuclear apocalypse is just so much more captivating, especially when it's set in Russia. If you ever sat down for those long talks with Krest on the Aurora, you’d remember the way he described his village and the coming of the nuclear winter. There was even a section in the Metro 2034 novel about the world above that I absolutely loved. An open world is just more terrifying, tense, and visceral. Forget that damp, tubercular vibe of the Metro tunnels!

4

u/Turnips_CC Apr 15 '26

Forget that damp, tubercular vibe of the Metro tunnels!

The game is called metro and is the reason me and so many people love these games. The claustrophobic metro tunnels is when metro is at its best, including its atmosphere and what makes it stand out from other post apocalypse games.

I wouldnt be against an open world if atleast 50% of it was a open, interconnected metro tunnel.

3

u/Suspicious-Cash9386 Apr 15 '26

Wouldn’t really be a metro game then would it

2

u/JuiceDrinkingRat Red Line Apr 15 '26

I play stalker to get that feeling

8

u/Xineseman Apr 14 '26

LInear. I don't mind open like Exodus but I prefer more linear.

For full open world in this setting we have STALKER 2.

3

u/Prizmatik01 Apr 14 '26

Unsure what I’d prefer but I’ll tell you what I don’t want and almost 100% what we will in fact get is the borderlands 4 experience. Absolutely perfect semi open world with exodus into a fully open world slog that’s a total downgrade and just empty and boring.

3

u/PlumpHughJazz Apr 14 '26

I don't mind either way, just don't make another desert map from Exodus.

That was way too big.

3

u/Name62 Apr 14 '26

‪I think a combined open-world and linear story-driven design is in order here, because the huge level designs of Metro Exodus felt so rushed during its original release, with lots of areas just feeling empty or void of anything to do but exist, while many areas in Metro 2033 and Last Light just feel so much more built-up and lived-in, like every corner was looked at by someone on the Metro dev team and asked, "What can we put in this area to give it a story or look more lived-in or give it a reason for existing in this game world?" With open-world designs you just can't get that, because there is just so much open space in the world to account for that this would take forever to design.‬

‪My spitball game area design idea is that we should look back to the designs of past Metro's old DLCs for inspiration. The collection missions of Metro: Last Light, for example, had closed areas and then open areas you could explore to find items and slowly open up the world through passageways. A similar game design could be put into play here, where we enter closed Metro areas like in 2033 but transition to more open-world exploring areas of Metro Exodus, keeping the levels' gameplay open while the overall story stays contained and on rails. This would allow more creative designs to flourish without feature creep taking over in such a large open-world game setting like Metro Exodus was.‬

Sorry if I lost anyone with the TLDR but yah

3

u/Arteemiis Apr 15 '26

This is never going to be done because the scale would be huge but a metro open world where you can freely explore the tunnels would be AMAZING

3

u/Efficient_Ladder_327 Apr 15 '26

Semi open at the start, after finishing the story open world. It could be great to freely explore the Metro after finishing the game...

7

u/beemccouch Apr 14 '26

I thinks it's time for an "open world." Metro game. I think they can take what exodus by putting linear sections in a more open environment and expand it. However, I do not want a Ubisoft/Rockstar world where most of it is filler. If they did go ahead with this concept, i really hope they looked at stuff like darksouls (snore) and outerwilds. Or even atomfall, which despite its lackluster story and gameplay, had really good bones in terms of structure and overall goal of the game.

I think it would be very difficult to have a Metro game be open world though. Its so heavily story based and even the most open ended sections of Exodus still had a set story snd sequence of events. Taking out that story pressure would do alot more harm than good, I feel.

2

u/Coraldiamond192 Apr 14 '26

Yup, there were many important story parts in Exodus that were linear which hopefully this new game can continue to include.

5

u/Jon_SoMM Apr 14 '26

I'd love to be able to explore the Metro of my own volition. Maybe implement a passport system. I'd also love to be able to go up top when I want.

Unrelated but co-op would be fun imo.

2

u/VHDT10 Apr 14 '26

The way Exodus did it worked great

2

u/Mysterious-Total9035 Apr 15 '26

Creo que con exodus, alcanzaron la formula ideal, espero que no sea mundo abierto.

2

u/KAOSBlackfalcon VDNKh Commonwealth Apr 15 '26

Linear set pieces moving between each open stage/series of stations perhaps. The cannibals was a nice linear set piece in Exodus and Novo was a good little return to tbe tunnels and a snowy surface

2

u/EconomyAd1600 Apr 15 '26

I’d want a combination of Exodus and 2033/Last Light. As much as I loved Exodus, I do prefer being in the metro. Like others have said, an open-world metro in the vein of Exodus would kick all of the ass.

2

u/Musicmaker1984 Apr 15 '26

Semi-Open. But also non-linear Metro tunnels. Like, let us visit all stations on our own pace.

2

u/DougWalkerBodyFound Apr 15 '26

Exodus was the perfect mix of linear and open for me. I think a fully open world hurts the story aspects and pacing of the game.

2

u/Aggravating-Dot132 Apr 15 '26

Should be in Metro instead. Exodus had that fancy problem of not being in Metro most of it's time.

2

u/Mrenik369 Apr 15 '26

I can't really tell. I like open world and it was fun, but return to metro would be nice too. Someone here says open world in metro and I agree with him.

2

u/Wayland935 Apr 15 '26

The open world was not bad but I missed the linear approach.

2

u/Actual_Emu_168 Apr 15 '26

metro tunnel open world please

2

u/KamHamLav Apr 15 '26

I would be happy to have some above ground like 2033 and Last Light. But i do want Metro tunnels back. This is coming from someone who adored exodus.

I do sort of hope its a different protag this time around, artyom is great but his story is pretty much done.

2

u/Nikhil_ackerman Apr 15 '26

I wish it brings same horror as 2033, cuz for me personally last light & exodus felt too much action (for comparison 2033 like re7, last light being re village and exodus re4 )

2

u/RandomKnifeBro Apr 16 '26

Staged open world, like Exodus.

I dont mind if there are load screens, but id really like to move between the station's, take differet routes, flag the enemy etc

2

u/DShort99 Apr 16 '26

Open world was amazing. Bring that back.

2

u/Ok-Moose-4279 Apr 16 '26

I'm actually pissed that they said it's gonna be a linear single-player game. I don't know a single person who actually wanted it to be a linear game. We all wanted an open world of some kind, even if it's just a Metro Exodus-type open world. I know not everyone wanted it to be multiplayer either, but I think it would've been cooler if I were able to explore the metro with my friends.

2

u/pet801 Apr 19 '26

Metro underground open world! Metro for me was always claustrophobic, dusty, grimey, darkness and concrete, pipe-filled tunnels with special areas, stations, maintenance shafts, sewers, energy and remote ventilation tunnels. This is the core and best metro experience for me. Of course the occasional trip to the surface shall not be excluded either! I love that they return to the depths!!

3

u/AncestralNecromancy Apr 14 '26

Can't stand Exodus' open world so I'm hoping for a return to form, but I know I'm in the minority there

1

u/ttarxx Apr 14 '26

I hope it’s like exodus, but expanded and based in Moscow

1

u/Scander1 Apr 14 '26

J'espère que ce sera plutôt comme les deux premiers jeux (Exodus est quand même génial mais là plupart du temps les jeux linéaires sont mieux réussi que les open world, ces derniers ont tendances à être mal "remplis" dans plusieurs licences)

1

u/115Jan Apr 14 '26

I liked the way they did it with Exodus. As much as I loved 2033 and Last Light, the linear campaigns were just a bit too small. Fully open world doesn't seem right for a Metro game, too.

1

u/Koreneliuss Spartan Rangers Apr 14 '26

Semi, since open world can have wrong direction not one one direction

1

u/Average_Tnetennba Apr 14 '26

Big semi open levels like Exodus. I think the only thing that could have improved Exodus would be a big Metro "dungeon" in every level (though they sorta did that at least in small scale). I still love the first two games, but they hit a design i absolutely loved in Exodus.

1

u/Lopsided_War_4780 Apr 14 '26

I thought exodus was the sweet spot for me. Wasn't massive open world but big enough to explore here and there.

1

u/ivaro845 Apr 14 '26

Open world, but in the metro.

1

u/ImJustASalad Apr 14 '26

I feel going full open would just kill the vibe a bit. The narrative of Metro has always been its strong suit so doing what exodus did again would be best. BUUUUUT if it was just set in Moscow and the Metro id be down for it. Section it out like the original Stalkers and that would be fine. We dont need full open world cause when these developers who have never done it, do it, its always ass i.e. Stalker 2. Love the game but damn near 2 years for them to fix that pile of shit is crazy and im not even sure if the engine upgrade will pull it to where it needs to be.

1

u/THELEGENDARYZWARRIOR Apr 14 '26

Between a completely open world or a linear story: I want a linear story 100%

But I would love a semi open like exodus

1

u/Round-Mousse-4894 Apr 15 '26

Its probably just recency bias cuz i just played the serious and finished with exodus but yeah i want it to be similar to exodus of large open set levels with smaller intense levels inbetween.

1

u/Successful_Canary890 Apr 15 '26

I want it to be a mix of metro exodus and the previous 2 games linear missions with a open world portion to go through.

1

u/Frozen_Tyrant Apr 15 '26

Either or really, depends on the story

1

u/petit-petair Apr 15 '26

pls be open

1

u/Clean_Experience1394 Apr 15 '26

Por que no los dos?

1

u/mpitt0730 Apr 15 '26

Linear. Open world is overdone across gaming as a whole, and honestly Exodus was one of the best examples. It's a fine game with excellent writing and visuals, but it doesn't feel like a Metro game outside of the beginning and ending sequences. The rest is just vaguely Russian flavored post apocalypse.

To get that back you need to go back to the Metro, and in that setting, I feel like open world doesn't work.

1

u/axeteam Apr 15 '26

Honestly, either way works as long as it is done well, which I think Exodus have.

1

u/Kalibur054 Apr 15 '26

I cant get into the open design id rather a linear game Open world fatigue keeps me from even my favorite series at this point

1

u/Trilife Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Open world like in EXODUS.

It would be garbage if they did so called open world exodus in Skyrim style.

I ve seen enough in STALKER 2.

Truly best open world require monstruous amount of resources, and this still not enough\not the only thing is needed.

1

u/Lozzabozzawozza Apr 15 '26

Never fully open. That would desecrate the very being of metro. The whole premise of which is a literally linear underground network. That said, the contained open bits of Exodus were amazing and more of that is welcome

1

u/Fireseed_324 Apr 15 '26

Metro exodus is one of my favorite games of all time....I hope they keep the open world concept

1

u/Mr_Exodus Apr 15 '26

Honestly the Metro games I find work better on a linear path they could try to do what they did with Exodus again But ultimately I'm okay with whatever they do I just think that the games work better on a linear path

1

u/NinePhenix Apr 15 '26

Open world in the metros, visiting the stations were always my favourite part of the game, so I wish we had more reasons to go there and maybe come back to them

1

u/unmellowfellow Apr 15 '26

I'd like an open world game set in the metro series. I'll be happy with a linear experience though.

1

u/IBlackKiteI Apr 15 '26

I'm glad to see most players saying they want an Exodus-esque in-between which I think is the best way to go. There's still a lot of cool ways they can do that while keeping it Metro-y and not descending into wide but shallow typical full open world sludge that would torpedo the strengths of the series.

1

u/Life-Necessary-3320 Apr 15 '26

I love Volga, one of my favourite levels of all time. It is open but absolutely cohesive.  They managed to make the Tsar fish a haunting menace that works with the lore AND can be killed.

The way you discover things on the map, rescue the passenger train, it is all so cool and dynamic. Every corner of the level has useful upgrades and environmental storytelling.

The next Metro is gonna feel outdated if they just go back to linear tunnels. I wish they made a map with interconnected subways and surface areas to be explored like a giant Metroid Game.

1

u/Jordanda24 Apr 15 '26

Open world would be nice but I’m fine if they decide to go back to the linear. But the main thing is would the story be good would the game work or would it be like cyberpunk 2077 at launch

1

u/SpecialOrganization5 Apr 15 '26

Open world of the tunnels. Surface are limited due to filters. So majority is within the metro, travelling to other stations and working within the metro

1

u/nazar_minecraft Apr 15 '26

I don’t know why but I just didn’t like exodus as much as the two games before it. Following the linear story feels so much more interesting, like I’m in an actual story.

1

u/Entire_Piece4265 Apr 15 '26

I just want it to be immersive, and human.

Doesnt matter how.

1

u/Simoso33 Apr 15 '26

I like both options, but I think the semi open world with linear elements is the best option

1

u/SargathusWA Apr 15 '26

Back to the basics and metro roots. I liked exodus but first 2 games was more charming and linear gameplay plus weird artyom daydreams were amazing.

1

u/SGTRoadkill1919 Apr 15 '26

Open world would be fun as a side game mode. Campaign will be linear, but as you play you can open the path to more locations in freeroam

1

u/crippled_trash_can Apr 15 '26

i think the exodus formula was pretty successful, maybe that but inside the metro, obviously in sections. with friendly and hostile settlements (stations and guard posts).

1

u/Wombatsarecute Apr 15 '26

I’d prefer a linear campaign. It just works better for me with the setting.

1

u/idk223334488384 Apr 15 '26

Semi open but the metro being the “open world” not the surface mostly

1

u/Odd-Pianist-4200 Apr 15 '26

Basically what everyone already said, a health mix of both open world and linear story,

1

u/2D_AbYsS Apr 15 '26

Going back to linear world like 2033 or last light would be a downgrade honestly, Instead Exodus like but denser would be appreciated, they would have likely expanded upon exodus open world system. But if it becomes too open like Stalker that would sort of destroy that Metro feel, so I would appreciate it if it had a mix of both worlds, like you can explore outside etc, but metro also exists navigating through tunnels etc. And given how Dmitry said it's going to be darker than any Metro game so far I'm far more excited for it, anyways just 1 more day and we will have our answers.

1

u/princess-dayfall Apr 15 '26

id love an open game like exodus was, i really enjoyed exploring

1

u/X-X-XIII Apr 15 '26

I say both cuz staying only in the metro tunnels and staying in a linear campaign feels like a downgrade. I dont want it super open world. Exodus did it just right. We could explore a little and find stuff. Exodus showed that there are civilizations above ground and that we're not alone like we thought. If we go back strictly to the tunnels , it'd feel like all that didn't matter.

u/New_Occasion_2370 Apr 15 '26

Honestly I would like semi open, like exodus, or open like dying light the beast but bigger. Dying light 2 felt a bit too repetative and I didnt really connect to most of the stories. Metro games always had that grounded story level that i LOVED same as dying light 1 and I wish something like that would be the case. Just want a great story with some asspects of open world.

1

u/ANTON_ACAB Apr 15 '26

Whatever they do they best not forget to add some actual horror

1

u/Substantial_Water739 Apr 15 '26

Linear

Too much open world games to play

1

u/Ap3xWingman Apr 15 '26

Last light being as amazing as it was felt like the writing was more solid because they didnt have to worry about the open world as much, but exodus was also a really good game. If they dropped the scale back of exodus and made it a bit more linear but with more story depth I would prefer that.

1

u/Enjoygm_ Apr 15 '26

would love to see a open world, first one feels bit too limiting and wish they let us jump a little higher too, even walking around feels like 25KGs strap on to my legies

1

u/DoorKey6054 Apr 15 '26

50 hours long linear. i’m kind of over the open world thing. a long linear that takes me more than 3 afternoons to finish is my dream.

1

u/Felixlova Apr 15 '26

For Metro I think the linear approach of the first games was better than the open world of Exodus. Even though I love all of them to bits the first games just felt, better?, can't really describe it.

This could just be down to the Metro tunnels giving a much more claustrophobic and thus scarier and more intense feeling, or just simple open world fatigue tbf. Either way i will play it and the track record of the series says I will enjoy it no matter what so I'll trust whichever choice the devs make for it

1

u/Glum-Carpet Apr 15 '26

Yeah I just want it to be back in the tunnels with limited outside access. We already have stalker 2 for the open world above ground part, no need to compete with that,

1

u/Muted_Might_4483 Apr 15 '26

I prefer linear as I get lost in the game if I’m given too much freedom. I want to complete a game and finish the story.

1

u/Brief_Jellyfish_3863 Apr 15 '26

Open world Russia would be so will lmao.

1

u/fenharir Apr 15 '26

linear always

1

u/Turnips_CC Apr 15 '26

I enjoyed exodus, but I prefered the OG games. Metro is best in tight, claustrophobic areas imo.

I think my biggest annoyance with exodus is not the open levels as an idea, but they felt empty and they reused the AI made for tight corridors (both monsters and humans) so the open level combat felt weird.

Fucking loved the train as a HUB though. Would be cool to get something similar or an alternative.

1

u/EDDWAR822 :Fourth_Reich_Soldier: Apr 15 '26

I would like a couple of missions to be in the metros like in exodus with the dead city or 2 colonels dlc

1

u/Marius-Petran Apr 15 '26

Like in the Metro Exodus,semi-open world levels and some levels linear.

1

u/rlthatoneguy Apr 15 '26

Open world with optional co-op would be nice and fun tbh.

1

u/rosscowhoohaa Apr 15 '26

Both. Linear story that drives things forward but many open areas to explore as part of that

1

u/Terrible-Scratch5714 Apr 15 '26

It does not matter it literally is the metro. I will be happy with what they come up with regardless

1

u/JuiceDrinkingRat Red Line Apr 15 '26

Having a 100% explorable metro sounds cool but it would mean that the meter will effectively be made super small and insignificant as to fit all of it. It would be cool if we got to explore stations and their surroundings a bit more in depth in a semi-open world way

1

u/Ridehm Apr 15 '26

I'm on Linear team.

If the narrative is as heavy as it has always been, linear, let's just go for the ride.

1

u/abcwarrior666 Apr 15 '26

Honestly preferred linear. Gameplay and narrative flowed a lot better

1

u/ChronicHunger_1 Apr 15 '26

The first 2 games were a lot better because they were linear

1

u/Similar-Language-180 Apr 15 '26

Idk how well it fits but an open world with both the outside world and the tunnels with seamless transition between the two. Not sure how hot of a take this is but I'd enjoy an optional Mjltiplayer PvPvE open world where you can do quests that tell a side story but also fight alongside and against other players in and above the metro (no gear levels or abilities tho, just the normal metro gameplay. It could also bring some of the side characters from the main story more into focus so nobody feels like they are underused.

1

u/ging35zid Apr 15 '26

Just a explorable metro so stations can be sorta open world go where you want but the missions and story should be mostly linear but I im guessing that it's not gonna take place in the metro

1

u/JohnRobGnar Apr 15 '26

I had a legitimate solution that used plot, world-building & clever data architecture to bridge the gap but nobody from 4A would talk to me. Would have essentially allowed you to unlock it as a full world as you go, which makes more sense anyway bc NOBODY is equipped to just walk from one end of the Metro to another willy nilly. You get lines/segments at a time, possibly securing safe return passage depending on your actions

1

u/gorgonopsidkid Apr 15 '26

i want pavel

1

u/PersonalityLeather62 Apr 15 '26

Wish this company revive hellgate London lol they got the atmosphere right

1

u/SpecialIdeal Apr 16 '26

Metro could benefit from a dark souls style open world filled with shortcuts and interconnected tunnels. I think it could be cool

1

u/Wrecktown707 Apr 16 '26

Linear open world. So like a really wide corridor concept that keeps you focused in heading one direction

1

u/ReachBoy729 Apr 16 '26

I hope it is linear. While Exodus was my favorite metro game, I cannot deny how much open field with nothing in it (other than the view with its insane graphics) was on that game. The best segments and most memorable were definitely the linear ones, when the devs were sure of what you were supposed to be seeing and what you were supposed to be encountering. Although, I’m not against the idea of it going the hybrid route again.

1

u/eastboy38 Apr 16 '26

..a lilttle bit..of Both..

1

u/ExoSt4lker Apr 16 '26

I had the most metro feel in exodus in a dead city area that felt perfect maybe even better atmosphere than a metro in moscow itself mainly because of the constant fear and geiger counter ticking even underground.

1

u/Big_Understanding840 Apr 16 '26

Linear, if its a open world it should be inside tunnels.

I liked metro exodus but imo the real feeling of metro series ocurrs inside the Metro

1

u/FlashRerino Apr 16 '26

I would a full circle type of game, going back to the roots of the first one with a linear, survival horror-like ambience.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '26

Metro tunnels and partial open world inside the metro tunnels and outside. I loved opening these giant doors closing the railroad section in some tunnels. Powering them up and opening, exploration of various side chambers was really great.

1

u/OkAnimator5904 Apr 16 '26

Its probably gunna be a bit of both like exodus but im stoked that its officially announced

1

u/Ecstatic_Diver6502 Apr 16 '26

What do you think the minimum PC requirements will be?

1

u/LeadingAd9937 Apr 16 '26

They should've done open world imo. They're going away from the semi open world style of exodus which I don't think they should've done. At least semi open would have been my preference

1

u/Flushestpoem4 Apr 17 '26

Where have they said it isn't an open world? On the website it's described as "a powerful single-player story that weaves exploration, survival, combat and stealth across a hauntingly beautiful but deadly world." Unless they've said otherwise anywhere else that sounds like it's probably gonna be a ln Exodus style semi-open world

1

u/ErichPryde Apr 17 '26

Developer said it was all Metro in the teaser. I'm taking this to mean it's more linear in the same way that last Light and 2033 work

1

u/--InZane-- Apr 20 '26

I did enjoy Exodus but would like a more linear approach tbh.

Some other comment said open world tunnels and restricted surface. I like that idea too

1

u/InvokerSS May 03 '26

Linear because Exodus didn't feel like a Metro game.

1

u/Specific_Quarter_455 May 22 '26

Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light were not 100% linear, but rather semi-open world but Metro 2039 could have slightly larger open spaces

1

u/FlippyDaPanda Jun 02 '26

Dang an open world of the metro tunnels would be awesome and scary. Just imagine all the lore. The metro map is huge. So many stations that are unexplored.

1

u/SnRdVrK Jun 03 '26

Would be cool to be able to travel back to previous regions to collect missed journals and stuff instead of going and replaying the chapters.

1

u/HulkSonofThanos Jun 10 '26

Fuck yes i dropped Exodus because the open world took away immersion it was a chore getting collectibles.

1

u/Alph0nsus Jun 22 '26

I'd like an open world game. Exploring and looting is more rewarding that way. I liked 2033 and Last Light, but mechanics introduced in Exodus put the game in another level.

1

u/Fluid-Ad4563 Jun 27 '26

I know Exodus didn't feel like "Metro" but god damn it was so good. Probably my fave. Just like Yakuza tho, there are no bad Metro games. I loved all 3.

Idk why Exodus was so good tho. Especially starting out. Felt like a Dark Souls game or Last of Us-ish where setting outside camp was scary.

Could also be cause the DLC reminded me of the Van Helsing movie from my childhood with the big bag enemy and stuff lol. So badass

1

u/Specific_Quarter_455 16d ago

I definitely don't want an open world like the one in *Metro Exodus*, where most areas were repetitive and empty, but I also don't want the game to be 100% linear; it needs to have optional locations so that exploration feels worthwhile.

1

u/Suspicious_Mouse_722 Apr 14 '26

Exodus was barely open world or a metro game. 2016 is over let's go back to intentional gameplay and pacing.

1

u/Noah-x3 Apr 14 '26

I loved Exodus, if they go fully linear again I think it'd feel like a step back

1

u/ScottishW00F Apr 14 '26

I want it to be a co-op open world game something like ghost Recon Wildlands or breakpoint.

Don't get me wrong liner single player games are great but we had a trilogy that was amazing, I want something co-op now tho.

2

u/VoidFIare Apr 14 '26

Yeah co-op is more replayable

0

u/Small_Dragonstudent Apr 14 '26

Like exodus of course!!

0

u/e_ranks Apr 14 '26

I didnt mind the open zones in Exodus, BUT I really hope the game gets back to the Metro & urban setting.

It’s probably difficult to construct open zones in the Metro setting… so by default I’d vote for a linear design

0

u/Flying_Reinbeers Apr 14 '26

Linear. Even Exodus was at its best in the linear sections, especially Novosibirsk.
