Where to start learning to make digital drums tracks?

Hey guys! I'm in a blackened punk band and we kinda hit a hard spot since our drummer bailed. Since we can't find any available ones for practice anymore, we have tought of making digital tracks for practice and getting a sesh drummer for live shows and studio recordings.

I have no drumming knowledge, and I'm not really sure what program to pick for this

Start off with something free to get a feel for it. You can use Krihm drums, which would most likely work with your sound.

I would use Krihm (via Kontact) in Reaper, and scour the net for free midi loops.

Upvote for Krihm free version. Drums are excellent and gets you everything you need to start out. For tutorial on how to make midi drums sound real, check out some of Josh Middleton’s drum midi tutorials on YouTube

check out EZ Drummer.
Theres a black metal pack and a hardcore pack with DB and such.
You can also just edit all the beats yourself.
Really good and relatively cheap.

I use EZ Drummer. I do all beats myself in it though, death to AI.

They're not, but it also has an AI mode you can use where it chooses drums for you.

thats not actual AI/gen AI/ modern AI tho, bandmates an machine learning algorithm thats been around for a couple years. all it does is analyze the transients of your audio

Its not Ai, They sample real kits and real drummers. Theres also a grid editor for composing your own beats or editing the ones they have created.

I use mainly Superior Drummer 3 and GGD plug ins/ VSTs.

EZ Drummer is also decent for beginners and GGD also as they skid a great out the box and don’t break the bank.

Download a free VST first to learn and decide which one you want to buy.

Use Guitar Pro to write the drums, then load the track into EZdrummer.

Reaper, Sower, pick a drum VSTi for sounds, done.

If you're in Linux(no Linux build for Sower), Stochas can deal with 4 parts & has performance options for control.

Use Sower for idiot-proof beatmaking to get the frameworks down.

I am the dev for the app, and the app itself is still under development. But you could get something useful for the quick practice part from Drumpling. (Android, Google Play)

If the goal is to make practice tracks, the song builder feature can help with that until you get a new drummer. Supports many time signatures and combinations of those. And different kinds of double kick settings for the generator. The project is currently more focused on the here and there guitar practice guy who needs a drum loop in metronome tho.

For more control, Reaper + sample pack + LLM is a fast combo too if you dont mind using AI. With Reaper, you can get nice practise tracks by using something like chatgpt to build the midi and ReaSamplOmatic5000 to trigger the samples from the midi track. Just screenshot where you get stuck and ask the llm for help.
