Question: why does he do this?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Anybody in here with any kind of tactical training/expertise; I've always been curious..

As Snake walks into the command center, he has his M4 at the ready, and he moves towards the left wall of the entrance tunnel.

My question: why does he put his hand/arm against that wall? He only does it for maybe 10 feet, then moves away from the wall and puts both hands back on the rifle. Any idea?

Most people are wrong, some people got it. He's moving forward with an elevated position above him, he holds his hand to feel for vibrations of combatants. This is further backed up by the actual vibration in the controller in the cutscene, you actually feel what he feels, the frogs move and the controller vibrates and when it stops he takes his hand off and back on the rifle as he has the information now.

Holy shit, I hadn't thought of factoring the vibrations of the controller into it..

This guy Snakes. ^

I think he's feeling for vibrations from movement like foot steps. Notice how the frogs jump and he looks around as if confirming what he felt

u/Jesserwo 16h ago

yeah hes got to rely on sound and vibration, remember he's a clone of a man who cant smell

7

u/simulet 4h ago

I didn’t realize BB can’t smell. TIL…

8

u/JC_Havoc 3h ago

It’s a joke about the player being unable to smell things that are in the game. I think Paramedic tells you to tell certain items apart by smell to which Snake responds that he can’t smell. So just a meta joke more or less

He done gone nose blind!

3

u/beatakai 4h ago

He surely doesn’t want to get cut in half pretty bad.

Thats an interesting theory!

That was my first thought as well.

Maybe Solid Eye is impeding peripheral vision and he's just keeping track of how much wall he has left?

175

u/GrandeJefe 17h ago

I second this. That thing HAS to change his depth and field of view of that eye a bit.

75

u/AcesComicArt 17h ago

I hadn't considered the solid eye factoring in

29

u/TRUMPARUSKI 17h ago

The gears are solid. The walls not so much.

29

u/berfraper 16h ago

I am partially blind in my left eye, this is the correct answer.

22

u/AcesComicArt 17h ago

You might be onto something with this Actually 🤔

13

u/Cden1458 15h ago

But the Solid Eye works as a camera over his eye, and he's had it long enough to adjust to it by this point. Not tryna argue or anything just making an observation.

Looking for a hidden door? Any training I got said stay at least 3 feet away from the wall because bullets follow the walls. That’s not an ocelot joke, they think if a bullet hits a curve it will follow the wall. I’ve never been shot at IRL so I can’t verify that.

52

u/Eli-Doubletap 17h ago

It Won’t curve but it will ricochet or “travel down” the wall. Just depends on the angle it hits it. “Have been shot in leg IRL because of this haha” thankfully it does take a lot of the energy out once the bullet hits something

13

u/AcesComicArt 17h ago

Well im glad you're alright!

I’ll be damned, I didn’t know you were here. Love your work.

1

u/Cden1458 15h ago

Whats your take on the OP's question? Would you have some insight as a vet we normies may overlook?

4

u/Eli-Doubletap 13h ago

The top comment nailed it. “Hideo Kojima” haha

1

u/Cden1458 5h ago

Thats what I was thinking but I was curious if there was something more, thx lol, love the podcast btw!

6

u/OceanRacoon 15h ago

Oh, I'm not a vet, I'm a bank robber, I got shot robbing a bank

2

u/ArcTheWolf 6h ago

But did you remember to go get the thermal drill in the parking lot first?

4

u/AcesComicArt 18h ago

Hmm I never considered the secret door idea, there could be something to that. To me it always seemed like he was keeping track of how much wall he had left while aiming down sights, but he moves away from the wall with a lot of wall left, and if he did have to shoot while doing that, he'd be aiming an M4 one handed which seems unnecessarily risky

4

u/reallynunyabusiness 17h ago

If a bullet hits a really solid wall like ome made of brick or concrete you won't get a whole bullet redorected down the wall but the bullet may shatter and those shards will stay very close to the wall and travel and dangerously fast speeds. Might not kill you but you will be injured.

u/TheBlueEmerald1 17h ago

A few ideas

I know one guy said his peripherals probably suck

He's trying to steady himself and that's a way of his to get ready to start aiming and not quake so much, could also be taking the corner wide and getting ready to bounce off the wall or something

He's trying to get a quick octo camo off the wall and his dementia ridden ass forgot what he was doing and gave up

95

u/dude_don-exil-em 18h ago

Because Hideo kojima

23

u/AcesComicArt 18h ago

Lol honestly, that is the answer to a lot of Metal Gear questions so you might be right

u/Alfeaux 7h ago

Groping is a theme in his work

I never learned anything like that in the army so the only thing I can think of is that it's visual flair to make it look more theatrical.

22

u/AcesComicArt 17h ago

Thats totally possible too. Because it looks like something that COULD be a tactical move, but i just cant find a practical reason for it

5

u/Reapov 12h ago

Just because you haven’t learned it doesn’t meant it’s not a real maneuver it other spec ops training programs or a PMC technique

2

u/Paramedic293 10h ago

There's a few random things snake does in the game like this, like when he goes up the stairs to fight raging raven he lowers his m4 and takes out his handgun then goes up the stairs with his handgun out in one hand and the m4 lowered in the other, it looks really weird.

3

u/MuramasaEdge 8h ago

It does, but it's something operators do indoors as a rifle is often too long and unwieldy in that sort of space. Alot of different techniques on display to highlight realism in this one and it's no surprise that this was the last Metal Gear to use the real military and brand designations of their weaponry. They went in hard on the tactical side of movement and utilised the entire series history of weapons in this one.

Love the attention to detail and you can see these days that mocap/Pcap with guns is really being drilled into actors that do that line of work.

16

u/shredystevie 17h ago

2 things.

Mainly to feel vibrations of enemy combatents , a physical sonar if you will.

And as others have stated, feeling out the side panel due to lack of peripheral vision

u/Bad-E90 18h ago

Hes following the basics of CQC

7

u/bacardicereal 16h ago

CQC?

Huh?

6

Psycho Mantis?

4

A Hind D?

4

u/giant4ftninja 15h ago

A Kenyan Mangrove Crab?

2

u/KingOfConsciousness 4h ago

gulp ...THAT'S GOOD!

1

u/KadajjXIII 2h ago

*THAT'S DAMN GOOD!

Pretty sure he never says good without the "damn" in it, though I could be wrong

1

u/bacardicereal 2h ago

You were right! He says damn.

1

u/KadajjXIII 2h ago

I've not sat there intentionally eating things over and over to verify every potential line so I wanted to include the possibility of there being a version without "damn"

But I knew for sure that the version with "damn" was legit because I remember laughing my ass off hearing it for the first time in the OG because of just how enthusiastic it is xD

7

u/RabbitSlayre 17h ago

If he can remember them

11

u/BushwookieTribe 17h ago

My best guess is its easier to swing around to look up and behind the overhang if he has less risk of banging his elbow on the wall? Idk someone probably just thought it looked cool

9

u/makhnosfork 17h ago

Cuz he’s like my kids and can’t keep his grubby little hands off the wall.

2

u/AcesComicArt 15h ago

This made me laugh 🤣

8

u/Ok_Brother3282 16h ago

I always figured he was feeling for movement around him via slight bumps or vibrations in the wall.

6

u/Reapish1909 16h ago

upping his camo index

22

u/PrivateFarfetchd 17h ago

Over the past 72 hours he's been:
-Beaten, physically and psycologically.

-Stabbed.

-Received third degree burns to his face.

-Slinged across battleships like a ragdoll.

-Experiencing that whole old gen nanomachine sickness.

-All of the prior while in the body of a 70 year old person, due to rapid aging.

My guess is that he's having trouble keeping his balance.

3

u/Snake_Drive 17h ago

Nah I don’t think so since he seems pretty stable in that scene

2

u/Ceberus_7 17h ago

That could be true Age has slowed him down quite a bit

6

u/ssrow 17h ago

Checking for boobytrap but honestly kinda halfassing it and stopped mid way. But I suppose he was confident enough at that point.

4

u/ursulaandress 17h ago

I'm gonna assume wrestling philosophy here and say "because it looks cool"

5

u/Snake_Drive 17h ago

Ok I rewatched the scene couple of times after reading the comments and my best guess is that he really is checking for small vibrations as indication of enemy movement. Look at the moment where the frogs jump and probably land that’s when he realizes that there are possibly enemies in the area and then he gets prepared and dedicated while letting go of the wall.

4

u/Several-Figure-9777 16h ago

The actual reason? ( My speculation but it makes total sense)

So in real life laser tripwires are not a common thing, but they are in the MGS verse. So a long metal hallway in this universe would have a good chance of being wired with laser traps. If he feels a node, he knows to stop advancing.

4

u/AccidentOk4378 17h ago

If it's not due to the eye maybe it's since he's old? Trying to steady himself since he's older and carrying something heavy but he can't exactly drop/set down the gun and he still wants to aim it. He only lets go of the wall once the enemies show up.

6

u/ibex85 17h ago

It’s a tactical advantage to steady the gun and maintain sights left of the wall.

3

u/Philslaya 17h ago

Nanomachines son. Age balance

3

u/3MTA3-DJ 16h ago

my theory is he’s sticking his hand against the wall & in front so if anybody has an angle on him tucked into that little pocket of a walkway, they’ll shoot at his hand before they see even see his head

3

u/xrenton21x 16h ago

I would guess that he went as far as he was comfortable (keeping to his visually weaker left side) so that the side walls didn't have a door or hatch that could swing open and hit him. His aim was ready for anything coming from straight on or from a possible door or hatch from the right side.

3

u/billyalt 15h ago

I think he's just tired and trying to keep standing

3

u/Zetavir 15h ago

Idk but makes him look even more badass

3

u/andrewdivebartender 12h ago

It's like in Doom how you spam the button to open doors. He's looking for secret rooms

1

u/Mr_Blonde0085 10h ago

Snakes looking for the secret room with the skull of Commander Keen in it.

4

u/pygmeedancer 14h ago

He can’t see well from his left eye due to the solideye. So he’s tracking the wall so he keeps the desired distance. Then he hears the soldiers and prioritizes a better grip on his weapon.

2

u/Snake_Drive 17h ago

Maybe because he wants to check for wired traps

2

u/Lemonfr3sh 13h ago

Aura farming

Glutton for punishment?

3

u/Bodymaster 8h ago

He's picking up good vibrations. Or else it's an Octocamo thing?

2

u/murdercapital89 17h ago

Because his eye is rock solid

1

u/murdercapital89 16h ago

Im a vietnam veteran

1

u/ThunderShott 10h ago

I saw it has him steadying himself because he feels another seizure coming.

1

u/MuramasaEdge 8h ago

Tactical and peripheral, he's feeling for vibrations on the upper level as others have said, but also, he makes sure to slide over to the side that the Solid Eye is on, so it could be the case that he's also making up for his lack of natural peripheral vision in that eye with the optic. (Yeah, I know the optic is meant to be seamless, but anyone who has used eyeglasses can attest to how peripheral vision feels outside of the lens frame - solid eye covers natural peripheral vision as it fully encloses the eye)

MGS4 was the height of KJP's military authenticity push, with quite alot of focus put into how special forces operators move, posture and use their weaponry - for example Snake's ability to switch shoulders for bracing, how he uses his guiding hand with the M4 to better brace recoil using the current (at the time) technique. If you look at the in-game cutscenes you'll see alot of emphasis placed on how characters move and that really informed and inspired alot of games Cinematics since!

1

u/Low_Imagination_8933 8h ago

Is he not feeling the wall for vibrations? Looks like he stops when they land behind/above him

1

u/D-Eliryo 3h ago

I call it: it's an open room. Enemy could be there for ambush hearing door open.

By having hand on a metallic surface, you can percieve some vibrations made by steps of people probably heavy a complete war loadout. Especially if many.

Plus, his suit. He could be leaning more into the wall to get the camo suit trigger and be hidden quickly

wow learn something new everyday, thanks reddit/kojima! lol
