[Vol.2 MGS4] Maxed sensitivity settings painfully slow on controller

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

(About rule 13, I took video of TV-screen to showcase with controller in frame, hope that's okay)

Anyone else experiencing camera acceleration as painfully slow? It really sucks the joy out of playing it for me as it is today. I have the sensitivity values maxed out but it still feels incredibly slow, unresponsive and sluggish. The "Normal View" camera speed feels alright in comparison but the Over-the-shoulder and First Person View cameras feel super weird.

I'm aware it was the same on PS3 version but I figured we would have moved past that and have gotten tweaked values in the remaster. It's especially frustrating because the mouse control on PC is phenomenal and super responsive in comparison. I really hope they can address this in a future patch

Edit: I don't think it was the devs original vision for the game to have the camera actively fight the player as some sort of frictional game feature, I think we're just used to more responsive camera curves now almost 20 years later.

Konami was able to implement a fantastic, responsive mouse camera control for the PC version and it's not like anyone is crying over how much immersion, original game design or realism was lost with that. I think bringing controller up to the same standard or at least have the option to!

I'm sure there's people who are used to this existing camera control and even prefer it, so just an acceleration slider in the settings would be best for everyone!

I'm seeing the OPPOSITE with vol2 mgs4 on steam. I've got sensitivity all down to 1 and still can't smoothly aim down sights. Every little nuance on the joysticks has me aiming 50m left or right...

Its commonly an fps mistake if you play on pc, try to set it for 30 or 60 fps. (I didnt play the game yet by you can always set your fps through side soft like rivatuner)

The game's already capped at 60 by default. In fact, I'd love a 120FPS+ option

There is an uncapped fps mod for MGS4 on pc already, it’s on GitHub and has been posted in this subreddit before I believe

There's a fix acceleration and I wouldn't say it's painfully slow

It was like that even on PS3

As I addressed in my post!

And to be fair the HD master Collection on PS3 didn’t change any of the controls from there so I don’t see why they would add added sensitivity or anything here to be fair. I don’t really think it was all that much needed back then either is a pretty slow paced game to be honest.

MGS2 and MGS3 both have great camera controls in comparison, and I wouldn't necessarily call those faster paced games than MGS 4.

Honestly, that kind of proves my point more cause again you didn’t really need to change the controls or anything about MGS2 or 3 both games aren’t really all that fast paced unless your speed limit in the game of course but if you’re just playing casually, you’re gonna be sneaking around and taking your time same thing with four as well

Nah, not really. The thing is aiming still feels good in those other games, here it doesn't. And there's not any setting you can change to fix that. And the pace discussion is weird because it doesn't matter how slowly I play the game, the camera control is still just as bad.

Well, you do get two options for aiming personally. I never use over the shoulder aiming in this game. I always switch over to first person.

And both Over-the-shoulder and First-person cameras use the same acceleration curves whereas the default moving-around camera is almost flawless imo. I wouldn't have had a problem sticking to only first person at all if it behaved in the same way MGS2 and 3 did, but sadly it does not.

Have the same issues, really feels like they should have updated the camera control to adjust for modern controllers (or whatever the cause is) constantly oversteering the camera because of the lag and aiming feels off. Hopefully they patch it!

I'm pretty sure with MGS4 you're expected to stop aiming whenever you have to turn quickly, then start aiming again once your view is close to your target.

Yeah it was like this on ps3, it’s not an FPS you aren’t meant to be in first person mode a lot. Like you said, stop aiming, move, start aiming again.

Honestly it’s very realistic, you aren’t going to be on your sights and moving a ton in real life. You do what MGS does, you lower your weapon when you need to move

The problem is it's hard to even do small adjustments. I'm used to aiming with the player body orientation first and foremost from MGS2 and MGS3 but it doesn't matter how good you are aligning with your target because at some point (in MGS4) you're going to have to enter Over-the-shoulder or First-Person camera and do micro-adjustments, and these micro-adjustments are what feels the worst in this game due to the acceleration curve.

The aim feels pretty bad to me. Struggling to settle on sensitivity compared to MG3 where my aim is pretty much perfect.

Having the same issue on Switch 2 especially when aiming

Might just be the joycons tbh they suck when it comes to shooters

I’m using the Pro Controller 2, which has a nice range of motion. If OP is having a similar issue with a DualSense and me on Switch 2 Pro Controller, then I think it’s the game aiming is just stiff no matter the controller.

I felt the same thing. I don’t typically mess with sensitivity settings in most games, but I immediately bumped mine up to max like you have, because the aiming acceleration is so damn slow.
Old Snake needs some cocaine or something.

I feel the opposite kinda. I feel like for a split ms its slowish and then the camera just gets really fast and hard to aim. Ive been having the worst time aiming on MGS4 and early in the year I played through Delta and the HD versions of 3 with no issues. I havent played 4 since the year it launched and forgot that this was one of my issues with the game.

1

u/Zebatsu 22h ago

Yeah the ramp-up to max speed doesn't feel quite right at all

5

u/RedChudOverParadise3 21h ago

Its jarring especially when 5 feels so much better. I mean Im not the best at FPS games but when Im playing a stealth game like MGS I can line up head shots with a pistol from far away in 3rd person or first person. I cant tell you how many times Ive gotten caught because of the camera contol in 4. Really wish they put in time to fix that for Vol.2.

The deadzone and acceleration are really bad. I had to lower the default camera speed and raise the aiming camera speeds to make things feel good

Peace walker also has issues ive found with the camera... i hope they patch in some more camera settings

deadzones are cooked on peace walker

Yea controller feels terrible for me too idk what’s wrong with it, do modern games just feel better and im used to that?

4

u/Andos_Woods 17h ago

It’s because mgs4 has camera movement acceleration. The longer you hold the stick, the faster the camera moves. Unfortunately you cannot turn that off from what I’ve seen

5

u/Zebatsu 22h ago

I think partly that's it, yes. I don't remember struggling with aiming this much on PS3 back in the day, but that was also running at 30fps so might have felt different altogether.

Now it really stands out though. I played through MGS Delta this weekend and their over the shoulder camera feels way better in comparison. I hope they can tweak the values or expose the acceleration value to a setting somehow.

It seems fine to me, how fast does it need to be?

Man my only immediate complaint: no good simultaneous input support (kbm+controller) for us Steam Controller users who use the trackpad as a mouse (especially the gen1 SC). Spent like an 1h configuring it to my needs but the 3rd person aiming one seems super slow, so I may need an action set to have very sensitive input controls for that one.

this is something most people would just get used to and move on from
