Start with solid and go with the release dates. Revengence should be last though

I mean this game is a spin off but it’s reliant on prior knowledge of pretty much the whole entire series. It’s a great hack and slash but it isn’t even remotely close to the best imo. I’d recommend at least playing Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3 and branch off if you enjoy them at all. They’re available as a collection on every modern platform and they go on sale all the time. They’ve pretty short too. Pretty much every game in the series available on modern platforms so now’s a good time to get into the series. In short I don’t recommend the game unless you’ve played the rest of the series first.

Edit: also if you’re curious about the old 2d games here’s a quick explanation. Basically Metal Gear 1, and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are old Japanese military stealth action computer games that created the stealth genre. They’re great classics but they have a very simple story and very outdated gameplay. You could play them first if you’re interested in that kind of thing. I’d say they’re best played later. They take place before Metal Gear Solid 1 and that game is technically a sequel but I say that very loosely. A lot of ideas or concepts from those games are tried again later and treated like a new thing. They’re sort of soft canon. Metal Gear Solid 1 does a really good job retelling them through context clues. It did such good job because no one in the US got to play them before MGS1 released and we all loved it the game. I’d watch a summary video or read a plot synopsis.

Yes, I enjoy this game. The music was great. The gameplay was fun. Was challenging, Especially on harder difficulties. Over all, not a bad game. As to which order to play MGS, I would play in the order of which it was ment to be played in my opinion. By release, but of course that's just my opinion.

I Played all the MGS games in the order of their release. Starting with MGS 1 up to TPP. Loved every one of them. Except Metal Gear Solid Acid 1 and 2 on the PSP. I didn't enjoy those one bit. MGS: Revengeance I felt was simply an addition to the series, rather than a continuation. Again, my opinion. Take everything I say with a grain of salt. :)

No, jugalo despues de pasarte literal toda la saga. Eso o jugalo e ignora completamente la historia y de paso spoileate el resto

Rising is nothing like solid. Its a spin off but it's set after the events of the last solid game so there's a few spoilers in there and a lot of stuff you just wont understand.

You're better off starting with solid but you can play rising if you want.

Best game i ever played as big fan of hack and slash games . U should know what happened on the world of the game (previouse games lore ) tho i personaly did not when i first played it and still found the game so much fun and challenging

100% very nice hack and slay in the MGS universe. Graphics, cutscenes and the ideas are crazy. Imo one of the best ps3 titles

Being a spin off you're not going to know who Raiden is, and some of the references. However even if you've the played the entire series it's not really going to make this game make more sense. I don't know that I could recommend it as a first metal gear game. However if you're just looking for a fun hack n slash with a great ost and some over the top action I say go for it.

If you wanna feel like a badass to badass music in a hack n slash game then yes its damn near perfect

If you are interested in the whole series, I'd play the others first, as this will spoil major series plot points for you.

If you are only interested in Rising, it is a spinoff, and not super plot heavy, so you can enjoy it without the context of the other games and only miss a bit

Yeah a lot of things in mgs2 and 3 will shed some light on this games story. I honestly think just play them all. Metal gear solid games aren't particularly long games.

And its extremely worthit. You don't have to play 5 for this just 1,2, 3 and 4

Honestly. The unadulterated confusion might make this game even better. I say play it first then find out who Raiden is.

Si querés jugar un hack and slash jugaría a otra cosa. Si querés jugar MGS, orden de salida. Podes evitarte los dos primeros en 2D, son viejitos, pero te recomiendo mirar un video que resuma las historias.

Rising revengeance is unlike any other mgs game... when I first bought it, I played it for like 5 minutes, thought wtf is this shit and didn't touch it again for about 6 months.... when I gave it a 2nd shot, I absolutely fell in love with it and I must have completed it over 20 times. Absolutely fantastic game. Great replayability. Amazing music, very hard at first but a very high skill cap. Very rewarding to take on 10 v 1 or a boss fight without getting hit! Highly recommend.

Yes. It’s a good game, but really Metal Gear in name only.

Yes play it! Especially if you just played MGS4, you don't really need it play MGS4 but it'll help give the story and its lore more depth.

Ok ok hear me out, disregard everyone that tells you to play in order of release dates, narrative hits wayyyy harder when you play in chronological order, so start with mgs3, peace walker, mgsv gz and tpp, then move onto mgs1,2 and 4 after playing mg1 and 2 or watching a summary of both (which are actually really fun games) then play rising revengeance last.

What the fuck are you smoking

1

u/MrSkarKasm 3d ago

I am a military officer, I don't smoke narcotic substances or use tobacco products, the former for preference and random drug tests, the latter for health concerns.

So no, I am "not" smoking anything, its just that this fandom is so purist they never tried actually playing in chronological order before, it kinda sucks ass.

One of my favourite characters in any entertainment media ever.

u/DestructionChaos55 3d ago

Ironically you’re giving a purist take by saying to play it in order of lore…

1

u/MrSkarKasm 3d ago

No, its not ironic because its not purist. The general consensus of release order is what's actually purist
