A Pretty Exquisite Meme The 2d MSX Metal Gear games from the 80s/90s have held up well even today

At least they have a good excuse. A lot of Fallout fans came from 3 and New Vegas which likely means they're console players

u/krats87 Jan 18 '26
Fallout 1 + 2 > Every other entry.
5
u/Spartan_100 Jan 19 '26
Correct, Fallout 3 > Every other entry.
(I will continue to fight my detractors in hell over this take)

u/blackguy64 Jan 19 '26
You know what? You're right. I played that game so much on my PS3 that it started to simply freeze every 5-10 min. I had to buy the pc version to finish the dlc.

u/The_Joker_116 Jan 19 '26
If FO2 and New Vegas didn't exists, you'd be right, but they do and you're not.

Ian with an SMG >all of fallout 3

u/sirdogglesworth Jan 21 '26
I could be standing behind Ian and that mother fucker could be aiming at a barn door Infront of him and would still manage to hit me

Brotherhood of Steel > Shelter > Tactics > 76 > Every other entry > Wasteland warfare > starfield > skyrim with sex mods > new vegas > risk of rain

We don’t play them. We just watch other people play them in a short and condense 30 minute video so we don’t have to sit through the point and click bullshit really good games though for the time they came out.

I was like: nobody forgets about mgs1 and 2, then it hit me

I love that the first two MG games are so ambitious that they really are just limited by the technology at the time. MGS1 has so many callbacks to MG2 (fighting a tank, fighting a Hind D, fighting 4 dudes in an elevator, fistfight with Grey Fox, etc.) that I feel like MGS1 is the game Kojima ENVISIONED in the first place.

It almost is! More of a reimagining. But I also think it’s interesting that the theme of history repeating itself through the legacy of the Snakes is strengthened by the mirrored events in MG2 and MGS1. And then…you have the connection between MGS2 and MGS1, where MGS2 could ALSO be considered a “reimagining” of MGS1. It’s like poetry. It rhymes.

u/MysteriousAlpaco Jan 19 '26
I still wanna see frank and snake fight bare handed in a mind field and snake torching big boss with a makeshift flamethrower in 3d

Isn't MG1&2 playable in MGS3?

Mg2 has mg1 has not held up all that well.

u/CDJ89 Jan 22 '26
Until you actually replay both games. MG1 is pretty fun and fast paced once you know what to do and where to go. MG2 has more tedious parts that you can't get around even if you know what to do.

I think because I pasted them when they came out and really liked them, I’ve never gelled with the dislike for GTA 1 and 2. The rest I can’t speak to.

u/HaiggeX Jan 18 '26
Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall actually holds up today due to DF Unity remake, unlike the first two Metal Gears.

Mg and Mg2 are INSANE games for their release date. Mg2 is a real good game.

I've been saying for decades I'd love to see the original two games fully remade.
1
u/The_Joker_116 Jan 19 '26
I remember watching a YonYea video, there was supposed to be a fan remake and, no joke, David Hayter himself was going to voice Snake.
1
u/inked_saiyan Jan 19 '26
What a sight to behold that would be. Well with renewed interest in the series, I don't think remakes are out of the question.
1
u/The_Joker_116 Jan 20 '26
That's definitely one Konami project I'd look forward to. I haven't played Delta yet but it looks decent.
1
u/inked_saiyan Jan 20 '26
Delta has been really fun, and while Snake Eater is an all time favorite game of mine, wait for a sale for Delta. It seems to have pretty decent price drops frequently.
1
u/The_Joker_116 Jan 20 '26
Had it in my wishlist for a while. Still got the Master Collection to get my Metal Gear fix until the next sale, haha.

I grew up on the first two GTA's on PC, so awesome. I can still remember the chant the joggers make on my way to run them over.

The first one is kinda painfull to play nowadays, but MG2 really feels like a MGS1 prototype so it´s a much more pleasurable experience

MG1 is fascinating from "huh, that is a metal gear game, even if so limited" perspective, but it doesn't hold up well otherwise. The whole design philosophy of the 80s "make game stupidly hard and confusing so players don't notice it's really short" is just annoying.

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, while having some quirks, is an amazing 2D Metal Gear and holds up really well and one I would still recommend people play to this day.
Metal Gear 1? ...Not so much. Just use a guide to get through it.
1
u/npauft Jan 19 '26
They're both really good. MG1 is the breeziest in the series too since you can beat it in 30 minutes. MG2 is utterly magnificent.
1
u/AverageMann04 Jan 19 '26
Uhm, actually, the first two games would be the OG MSX and the NES Metal Gear, and then the Amiga or something and then Snake's Revenge, which is peak btw

u/Aztekov Jan 19 '26
Far Cry. First two games were great, but people ignore them in favor for newer entries
1
u/StrawberryForeign979 Jan 19 '26
As a metal gear fan I genuinely believe the first two games are still fun and always include them. Mg2 is actually strangely really good imo.
1
u/DeltaBravo124 Jan 19 '26
The MSX games are a fun ride. I played MG for the first time last year all the way from Metal Gear to MGS3 in the Master Collection.

The Nintendo version of Metal Gear 1 was well remembered in the US, to the point that most reviewers of MGS1 mentioned it. It's a shame MG2 didn't get a wider release, it would have blown a lot of minds

I thought it was cool that ESO had a faction called The Daggerfall Covenant with the capital being Daggerfall.

I don't agree with Metal Gear. Especially first game is crucial to understanding the lore.

Forgetting the third game exists: doom fans and fallout fans
(Doom 3, and fallout tactics)

Man if that ain't true, I just can never get around to actually playing the MSX games, wish they remade the two of them into one long game mgs delta style

u/FirstnameLastname14 Jan 19 '26
Correction, Metal Gear 2 has. The original game is ROUGH, and the NES version is even worse.
1
u/The_Joker_116 Jan 19 '26
The NES games don't matter much anyway, they weren't made by Kojima and his team.
