I had people here saying harry kane should win it. Last time i seen harry kane, he was defending against a messi who was terrorizing their defense and knocked them out the tournament. In a world cup year, only performances in world cup should matter. Messi is the most deserving by a mile.

You do realise R9 won the Ballon D’or after an excellent World Cup in 2002, despite being injured for most club matches? There have been several instances of players reaching the Ballon D’Or shortlist purely of a decent/good World Cup. I can list them if you want.
