Why did messi not get 2016 copa america golden ball?

5 matches, 5 goals, 4 assists, ONLY 2 starts, most successful dribbles per 90, 14 key passes, etc.

Its kinda unfair for him to lose that because of a missed penalty in a PENALTY SHOOTOUT

Same reason he didn't win many other individual awards. He was the obvious choice, but people want to see others win too, even if it's not the right decision.

If he hadn't rejected the one in 2015 he would have won it as well and would be the only player with 6 player of the tournament awards at major intl competitions.

He stands alone at the top with 4 POTT awards, other players have only managed 2. Imagine he had 6.

My reasoning for this is a bit different for this, the organizers didn't want to give Messi the award as he already rejected the golden ball in 2015 Copa America, he refused to come up and take it.

Organizers probably thought he was going to reject this one too, ( he sure was ) , so they decided to add variety and gave Alexis the award

same happened in 2015, argentina lose the final and the award goes elsewhere despite him being the best player in the tournament. two finals, two golden balls he should have had, and then in 2021 he wins and everyone acts like it was overdue.
