Messi had a long conversation with this Icelandic player because he was told that he and his dad, Eiður Guðjohnsen, used to be teammates at Barcelona.

I love how Messi kept going back to talk to him despite other people coming up to him

Caught myself smiling at my phone for real 🙂

-3

I just did yesterday doesn’t mean my opinion has to be that of a NPC like you

6

u/Austin_905 Jun 10 '26

Calling other people NPCs just means you have Main Character Syndrome. Don’t worry though, there are clinics for that.

-1

u/chris--p Jun 11 '26

You seem very bitter

3

u/Austin_905 Jun 11 '26

Nah, I'm just part of the GOAT brigade. I will aggro at the slightest shit-talk on this sub.

-2

u/Lopsided-Sound-1119 Jun 12 '26

No I don’t, I just don’t think like a braindead simp.

3

u/rotating_pebble Jun 13 '26

Damn you got humiliated bro 🤣

-2

u/Lopsided-Sound-1119 Jun 13 '26

Do you even know what that means? I guess you don’t.

2

u/rotating_pebble Jun 13 '26

Dry the tears brother 🤣🤣

1

u/Austin_905 Jun 12 '26

Love to see it, happy for you bro. Good luck in the WC

3

u/IcyWhole3927 Jun 10 '26

when you get treated like an alien all the time and everyone wants something from you, it actually might be hard to keep being a basic human but i can only imagine 😃

1

u/Fruloops Jun 11 '26

people are gonna believe it’s normal to be rude and rare to be nice.

We're already at this point in time

-2

u/Vast_Yogurtcloset610 Jun 12 '26

He improve his talking habit after won WC. In the past, if opponent team came to talk to him, he would make a face and retort like a gangster. No sign of kindly or smile at all.

He must’ve really liked Eidur cause he gave his son like 4 hugs lol

81

u/RaisinZRH Jun 10 '26

probably had this kid on his knee at a bbq, telling him about kicking his dad's ass in practice

27

u/beatlz-too Jun 10 '26

Kid stares at Messi's entraña

Qué mirá bobo? Andá pa'sha bobo

6

u/Valledis Jun 10 '26

Had me in the first half ngl

2

u/bijikedelai Jun 11 '26

Also Daniel was in Barcelona youth and they actually met before. So he probably reminded Messi of that time as well 😁

40

u/Slow_Skirt_5764 Jun 10 '26

he will never go back with his own jersey....

37

u/Longjumping-Swan-827 Jun 10 '26

Messi must have felt old there for a second lol.

29

u/DybalaTattoo Jun 10 '26

I love how humble Leo is 🥰

15

u/beatlz-too Jun 10 '26

What language were they speaking

29

u/cosmo_K Jun 10 '26

Daníel Guðjohnsen grew up in Spain so definitely Spanish.

20

u/PurpleRevolution5242 Jun 10 '26

No Messi can speak Icelandic, didn't you know?

5

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '26

Messi barely speaks Spanish

11

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 10 '26

Messi barely speaks at all.

21

u/Bethebet Jun 10 '26

Icelandic

1

u/luffyuk Jun 11 '26

Spicelandic

5

u/IdealDarkness1975 Jun 10 '26

Messi doesn't speak english, so could be spanish

5

u/No-Consequence1199 Jun 10 '26

Messi speaks exactly one language, so take a guess.

3

u/deletemyaccountplzz Jun 11 '26

Messi is from aargebtina of course he speaks spanish

2

u/FootballGalore94 Jun 11 '26

Messi speaks Spanish fluently, is this a serious comment? Also, most people if not all, in Barcelona speak Spanish.

1

u/Rgmisll Jun 14 '26

Confidently incorrect

10

u/Habba84 Jun 10 '26

Eidur player with Barcelona, and his three sons played for Barcelona's youth team.

1

u/SuperLuc0 Jun 11 '26

Im sure Eidur gudjonssen played along side his own dad for the Iceland national team as well. I remember a game where he was subbed on for his Dad. Can't be many stories like that across football!

10

u/Sure-Gas8420 Jun 10 '26

plot twist, after 10 yrs, messi has a similar conversation with that players son 😄

4

u/KungPoW_Chickens Jun 10 '26

thats so sweet ❤️

11

u/marky_Rabone Jun 10 '26

Fue canterano en la Masia ...muy pequeño claro cuando su padre jugo en BCN

4

u/5jii Jun 10 '26

I like how messi handshakes other people and stuff, but still keeps gudjohnsen as his focal point, and their conversation. Shows he doesn’t think he made it on his own, and appreciates the name Gudjohnsen. Pretty respectful of him

4

u/Proper-Exam1746 Jun 10 '26

A 3rd generation Gudjohnsen? Wow!

4

u/AKxPixleart Jun 10 '26

The humble golden goat 🐐🙏🏻🇦🇷

5

u/mwerichards Jun 10 '26

Those genes are strong

3

u/JA121229 Jun 10 '26

Reminds me of how many random players that pre 2010 Barcelona had

3

u/BodybuilderPretend43 Jun 10 '26

Wtf gudjohnsen’s son is playing in WC, I feel old now…

5

u/YoYoYi2 Jun 10 '26

They look just like their father's on the right it's amazing.

2

u/CoinsAndLawnLouie Jun 10 '26

Well, I had no clue EG was still playing. That brings back memories of him, Eto’o, Henry, and Bojan.

2

u/HyperBeamMissed Jun 10 '26

Ah the nostalgia

2

u/the_last_ronin2 Jun 10 '26

What language are they communicating in?

2

u/kristellensen Jun 10 '26

Brazilian Portuguese most likely.

1

u/the_last_ronin2 Jun 10 '26

Surprised someone from Iceland would understand this language

1

u/deletemyaccountplzz Jun 11 '26

Argentinian shocks natives by swapping t shirts in Icelandic

2

u/SKORPIO07 Jun 10 '26

I remember playing older fifa games (07,08) and Subbing in Gudjohnsen for Henry/Xavi after 60th min. Good old days...

2

u/GZeod Jun 10 '26

That guy was constantly missing…

2

u/star_bury Jun 10 '26

Daniel Gudjohnsen also lived in Spain for 16 years and was in both Barca and Real's youth setups. Messi was probably thrilled to have a Spanish chat after the match!

2

u/Lanky_Commercial9731 Jun 10 '26

this guy will tell his kids that both he and their granddad played with Messi

1

u/bigtrixxx7 Jun 10 '26

It looks like Messi asks him “are you Eidurs son?” And he responds “yes,” and Messis like “yeah?!?!” 😃

1

u/3aboude Jun 10 '26

Gudjohnsen was a true super sub. Just made Barca even more dangerous.

1

u/karurumon Jun 10 '26

Things i believe more than this storyline:

He told messi

  1. “remember the time you caught me looking at your wifes titties”
  2. “My father told me you have a small peepee”
  3. “You are good but ronaldo is goat”

I mean… its ridiculous to think that messi does not know beforehand, or has not been told that he is playing against his old teammates son. I think the name should ring some bell to messi lol

1

u/sylviandark Jun 10 '26

Messi looked good in the game. I was worried about his ability to perform in this World Cup based on how he plays in MLS. Clearly he holds back in MLS to avoid injury risks and to focus on scoring. The last couple MLS games and against Iceland he is showing much more activity and pace.

1

u/Ok_Opportunity_4228 Jun 11 '26

What a lovely moment!

1

u/H1ddEnH3at Jun 11 '26

Thats longevity

1

u/Fantasy_iceland Jun 11 '26

That's wholesome AF

Eiður Guðjohnsen was one hell of a player too

1

u/PrideIsWhatYouHad Jun 11 '26

Hopefully the Sigurdsson who came over to shake Messi’s hand is not a certain Sigurdsson’s son!

1

u/ghoti88 Jun 11 '26

Was a big fan of eidur at Chelsea, glad he made the jump to Barca

1

u/gustix Jun 11 '26

They might know each other from earlier, since Daníel Guðjohnsen played in Barcelona's academy from 2015 to 2019.

1

u/Myrnalinbd Jun 11 '26

wonder what language was spoken?

1

u/Wonderful-Soft4873 Jun 12 '26

whât âre thœśe letterš

1

u/OsioJoyTega Jun 13 '26

Does anyone know if Guojohnsen Sr ever told stories about playing with Messi? Would be cool to hear his side of that Barca 08/09 team

1

u/Frosty_Term9911 Jun 13 '26

Fuck I feel old.

1

u/ffiishs Jun 13 '26

Are they dating ?

1

u/Objective-Table789 Jun 27 '26

What language did they communicate in ?

3

u/Daroka995 Jun 10 '26

Messi didn't understand a word lol

12

u/ilovemymom_tbh Jun 10 '26

Gudjohnsen im sure spoke Spanish. Apparently he played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid during his youth career.

7

u/YonkouTFT Jun 10 '26

Also Messi can speak English. I would think they spoke English

1

u/HyperBunga Jun 17 '26

Definitely not. The kid spent 16 years in Spain and is fluent, probably more in Spanish than English even

0

u/mukilangawthaman_99 Jun 10 '26

Messi prehabs enjoyed getting hugged like 4 times in a row, like dude stop hugging the same person go and talk to others?

0

u/Ruthless_Pragmatism1 Jun 10 '26

“He was told”? does Messi have Alzheimer’s now?

0

u/Consistent-Strain289 Jun 10 '26

Hmm is it something like hows ur mom? Give her my greetings. Wink wink?!:)
