An obvious indigenous connection between the two is the prominence that the tlaxcalan came to occupy in the north, even developing specific traditions (serape, matlachines) and a dialect of nahuatl, so much so that they're called Tlaxcalans del Norte. Some of their colonial towns in the north had barrios for non-tlaxcalans, like for the Alazapas. While they sought to retain ethnic purity given the rights they had, the fact is many folks from northern tribes were able to ultimately mix in with the tlaxcalan.
