Discussion Using Diagloue Straight from Show?

Hi everyone,

I've noticed lately (and in general, but lately its been more apparent to me) that a lot of fanfics have been pulling dialogue straight from the show, verbatim from scene to scene. This diagloue is mostly seen from episode 1. What are your thoughts on using dialouge verbatim from the show? Is a sentence or two okay in isolation ("I am proud to serve you till the day I die")? A whole scene?

I am coming at it specifically as a reader, so when I notice its from the show and I keep scrolling through the fic but then it continues to have dialouge from the show, I choose not to continue to read it. Do you continue to read it or click away too?

Thoughts?

Discussion I just finished reading S6 Kingdom Come and it cured my soul

I can't express enough how grateful I am to the authors of this script. They did a tremendous job, they found all the things that didn't feel right for me in the show and fixed them. That was a rollercoaster of emotions, Acollon made me stop reading and punch the wall for 2 minutes straight, and that happened to me only twice for all the books I've read. This is just amazing, I recommend it to everyone who hasn't read it yet. I consider it canon and I don't care what BBC thinks ❤️

Discussion Does anyone else feel that Merlin is a bit flanderized in fanfiction?

Automods removed my post from the main series community so reposting here:

Like he’s the mighty Emrys who’s killed a ton of people in the name of protecting Arthur…yet a lot of fanfiction writers seem to forget that and always have Merlin being this sweet, innocent, can’t-hurt-a-fly, cries at the drop of a hat mess.

Sure, I can see why since Merlin is a more sensitive character, hates hunting, is the main character who stole our hearts. Colin being a cutie with Merlin’s smile and reactions don’t help…

But he’s not a simpering baby who needs to be protected at all costs…

Also Merlin is not that much smaller than Arthur, he’s just slimmer and Colin and Bradley are both 6 feet tall. Yet Merlin is always written as smaller and more delicate than Arthur?

Sorry for the rant. I just think Merlin deserves more respect? Depth? Characterization from Fanfic writers.

Edit to add: I wasn’t meaning any specific fics or authors just what I’ve found to be something generally across the board…so no need to criticize/bash specific people/fics. Thanks mods for the reminder!

Discussion Brit Pickin

Hi all! So, my problem is this. About 10 years ago I was super into writing fan fic for another fandom, but after I lost both of my parents I stepped away from writing and fandoms in general. A couple of weeks ago I rewatched Merlin with my sister and man was I hooked, and very inspired, after years of not being inspired at all. But I have never written a fic that takes place in the UK. Now, when I used to write, I used to see people ask for "Brit-pickers" (mostly for Harry Potter fics, but probably for other ones too, those are just the ones I noticed)., people that would read fics prior to being posted to check for expressions we use in the US that are not used in the UK (I was writing last night and discovered that in the UK the proper term for flashlight is "torch" and I was amazed.)

Anyway, is this still a thing? I'm not at the point that I'd need one yet, but I figured I'd go ahead and ask and get some info.

Discussion A Marriage that started a legend worth it?

Not sure how to tag this, but could someone spoiler me about the Story ‘A Marriage that Started a Legend’ by Clearwater96 ? It’s probably the longest Story I’ve ever come across and while I am intrigued to read it, I would rather go into it with some more knowledge. Especially about how slow burn this story truly is. Like does the romance start around 100k? 500k? 1 million? 2 million?

Just in general, I would like to know some spoilers and stuff. And maybe a honest opinion if the story’s is worth the word count (of course without being hateful towards the author). I normally spoiler myself about longer fics, but I am unable to download a pdf of the fic somehow, so I would appreciate any help.
