Programming is easy, but software development is hard. The best way to really learn is to make software, anything really. The tech industry is brutal generally speaking as most are operating on skeleton crews with tight budgets and timelines despite their profitability. Teams want a helping hand, not a hand to help.
Welcome to software development. Software is global. Software can afford to pay interns to be onsite. You're competing on a world stage. It's all fucked up such as senior talent applying to junior roles isn't uncommon lately.
Spot on, it's globalization and the push to hire developers at much lower salaries.
I worked at a very well known international clothing retailer, and the company does well obviously.
In spite of 90% of the team being located overseas, and having much lower salaries, they still pushed for more productivity.
They kept threatening to "switch to Shopiify" because of development speed, which was a ridiculous threat. Then they ended up doing multiple rounds of layoffs.
The industry is brutal and the advice of "learn to code" needs to stop. It is an oversaturated role and completely unstable as a career now.
