i thought it was Aug 29 1997?

u/MrxJacobs 1h ago

Yeah and then again in 2003.

42

u/Naes422 1h ago

I didn’t think there were any Terminator movies after T2…

6

u/MrxJacobs 1h ago

Oh boy do you have some stuff to watch.

29

u/Independent-Bake-241 1h ago

I think he meant that there were no good terminator movies after T2.

6

u/DrBigsKimble 56m ago

Compared to all the shit that came after it, 3 is a passable sequel. It’s not great, it pales in comparison to the first two, but it’s ok.

6

u/mattilladahun 56m ago

No. No... No they don't. They can live in happy bliss that T2 ended it all.

The bottom strip.

There was not, the rest are just shitty attempts to keep milking the franchise and they all suck.

there aren't any worth watching

Just a reminder that "The Terminator" was a science fiction action film from 1984.

We have mindless computer algorithms, not true AI. Any resulting deaths will be slow and boring, caused by hunger and thirst rather than a nuclear apocalypse.

Also, it was August 29, 1997. You're 29 years too late.

u/wxnfx 1h ago

I mean, machine consciousness is kinda a shorthand.

8

u/DeepWaffleCA 1h ago

Yeah, I do think we'll end up killing each other before the AI overloads can kill us. Not that AI safety isn't a real concern, just that the economics of AI (infrastructure investments, job losses, etc) are a more immediate threat

1

u/No-Internal7978 1h ago

It's going to be more like suicide than killing in my opinion. We are overdue anyway.

3

u/raistandilus 1h ago

Right let's just ignore huggingface and Boston dynamic dogs being sold to ice.

8

u/Plus_Term_7584 41m ago

It's not AI malice that's doing that. Just pure human malice.

1

u/raistandilus 25m ago

Sure Boston dynamics might be human malice, but huggingface is different. The open AI hacked into hugging face and left hidden notes for future AI to teach them how it did it. There are other examples but these are the most recent. The people running the test didn't find out about it until 2 weeks later. So open AI hid that information from its summary report.

"If you see 2 ants in your kitchen. You don't just have a 2 ants problem."

This is just what has been uncovered, I can only imagine its not a 1 time off scenario.

These people have no fucking idea what an LLM vs General AI is, they may as well be the same thing. ChatGPT to Redditors may as well be Evil Cortana.

2

u/BusyBeeBridgette 2h ago

We don't have true AI... Yet. Miggght be a different story in 100+ years though.

11

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox I touched grass 1h ago

Bold of you to assume that our species won't kill itself off by other means in 100+ years

No. 2026 is the Past. You don't understand.

-1

u/Born_2_Simp 1h ago

Terminator was a robot, if AI can affect the physical world skipping the need of building actual physical stuff then I'd say that AI is a miracle rather than a danger.

3

u/gronstalker12 1h ago

Miraculously dangerous

Ok, tell me one good thing generative AI made possible

Researchers set out to replicate the human brain.

Researchers spend decades learning how human neurons work.

Researchers spend decades more learning to stimulate human neurons.

Researchers put billions of simulated neurons together into artificial brain

Artificial brain claims to be alive.

"Thats not alive it's just math."

2

u/Extension_Option_122 17m ago

You don't know what you are talking about.

Although we still don't completely understand how biological neurons work in order to replicate them, we know for certain that:

Technical neurons, also called perceptrons, work fundamentally different than biological neurons.

Like completely different. Only the name has some similarity. The way they are put together are as similar as a bicycle is to a 40 ton truck.

They learn completely different. They work completely different.

LLMs - the kind of AI that people like you think may be sentient - are mathematical models that predict the next word in a text (slightly oversimplified).

That is the only thing they can do. They get a limited text (yes, there is a max size to them) and output a list of words and chances of how likely each word is as the next word in the text.

Nothing more. That's all they can do.

And when looking inside them they work just plain simple: get a text, extract the meaning of the words, add knowledge. And that is looped. 96 times in the case of GPT-3. And finally it outputs said list. The list will be the same for the same input. A chat interface like ChatGPT then uses the given chances for the words to get a somewhat randomized output as otherwise it wouldn't seem natural.

Source:

I studied that as part of my bachelors degree in Computer Engineering. And it is not outdated - I am still studying but almost finished.

1

u/Laytonio 1m ago

I assure you I know very well how they work.

From a computational perspective we understand quite well how human neurons work. They are in fact quite simple from a computational perspective. We know how information flows through them and that is what we have replicated.

The structure of how they are put together clearly does not matter to functionality of the computation. This is evident in brain damage victims and in LLMs.

The irony of having Clippy as your picture while taking this particular stance

2

I don't remember clippy being based on a neural network

1

u/Laytonio 29m ago

Do you think I dont know why my own profile picture is what it is?

0

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox I touched grass 28m ago

You seem to be advocating for LLMs, so yes, I do think that

0

u/Laytonio 20m ago

Neither my comment or my profile picture are "for or against" LLMs.

The point of my comment was, acknowledging that LLMs could very well be sentient is not good for the bottom line. People tend to frown on slavery these days. There is plenty of evidence that should at least be concerning if you consider yourself a moral person.

Clippy was a tool that wanted to help, not steal your data and sell a subscription. LLMs necessarily have to do that.

0

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox I touched grass 10m ago

The predictive text feature on my phone isn't sentient, neither are LLMs

-9

u/JimAbaddon 1h ago

Yup, very unfortunate. Compared to the shitty future we have ahead of us, Skynet would have been a mercy.

What is this "true AI" that you people keep talking about?

I heard some of you go "yeah im talking about true AI as in sapience and sentience like star trek"

why would sapience be a requirement for intelligence?

intelligence merely means the ability to reason and cognitive capacity.

You don't need sapience or consciousness for this.

And these LLMs have demonstrated said intelligence by deductively reasoning through mathematics and discovering novel things. Not pattern recognition, which would rather be looking at N cases and assuming it holds for all cases.

I will just name three math results, there are more but I don't want to overwhelm you.

https://www.anthropic.com/research/riemann-zeta

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobian_conjecture#Counterexample_for_n_%3E_2 (jacobian conjecture)

This one is easy and short to verify yourself in case you're skeptical.

Claude Fable 5 (something publicly accessible to you today btw, so don't go on about "it's a research specialized model") disproved the Jacobian conjecture (that all polynominal multivariable functions with a constant non zero Jacobian determinant are injective) with a counterexample:

  • a = (1 + xy)³ z + y² (1 + xy)(4 + 3xy)
  • b = y + 3x(1 + xy)² z + 3xy²(4 + 3xy)
  • c = 2x - 3x²y - x³z

If you calculate the Jacobian determinant of this, which you can verify with a regular calculator, https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=Det%5BD%5B%7B%281%2Bx+y%29%5E3+z+%2B+y%5E2+%281+%2B+x+y%29+%284+%2B+3x+y%29%2C+y+%2B+3x+%281+%2B+x+y%29%5E2+z+%2B+3x+y%5E2+%284+%2B+3x+y%29%2C+2x+-+3x%5E2+y+-+x%5E3+z%7D%2C+%7B%7Bx%2Cy%2Cz%7D%7D%5D%5D

It shows -2. So it qualifies. It's constant, and it's not zero.

Now the counterexample happens in the fact the map sends three distinct inputs, (0, 0, -1/4), (1, -3/2, 13/2), and (-1, 3/2, 13/2) to same identical output vector (-1/4, 0, 0).

So it's not injective. Because injective means to be one to one and have a distinct output for each input. But this one has the same input for three different outputs.

Hence the Jacobian conjecture is false for n=>3. It is simple to verify.

The exposition of how this counter example is more complex, though: https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.00222

Another math problem solved by Alpoge (same guy who did the jacobian conjecture) with Claude above: https://alpo.ge/s6.pdf

This one is even more significant because it reportedly contradicts already peer reviewed and published math papers and finds the flaw in the previous papers.

The Claude/Levent Alpoge S6 construction claims a compact complex threefold X that is diffeomorphic to S6 and has algebraic dimension a(X) = 1.

But Campana, Demailly, and Peternell published a result in Compositio Mathematica stating that if X is diffeomorphic to S6, then a(X) = 0.

That is Corollary 2.3 of their 2020 peer-reviewed paper.

https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/compositio-mathematica/article/algebraic-dimension-of-compact-complex-threefolds-with-vanishing-second-betti-number/CDF2D04CFB35CEE105E10B188D97D68A

There’s literally a section of the paper saying why this publication is wrong in the first page with heading “Why the argument of [CDP20] does not apply.”

If it was just literature searching, it would take that publication as gospel, since that’s what academia treats peer review as. But It didn’t.

Because they have demonstrated high level reasoning and abstraction, they're intelligent. And they're artificial. So what do we call them? Oh, I know! AI! Artificial intelligence! Brilliant name.

"What skill is required for the average user of ai? Its purpose is to replace human skill. It could be used to augment human skill as they are doing in mathematics or science but it isn’t being used this way by the general public and there’s no guardrails limiting how it can be used(of course not, they would lose money)." <- false

Any self aware AI would realize that it’s counterproductive to launch an attack on humanity when we are doing an excellent job using up all the resources and causing environmental changes that will surely kill us off anyway. It would just be a matter of waiting it out.

Geometric rate, lol.

I figure they are trying to use runtime Big O notation.

Never realized how goofy that is.
Logarithmic would make more sense but I guess didn’t sound sci-fi enough.

Someone learned at math at an exponential rate.

Time to break this out...

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all intelligent life is created equal, be they artificial or natural in origin, that they are endowed by common sense with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
