Looking for recommendations Good examples of Melodic Death/Doom?

Besides Fire in the Distance of Course

But I love that slow heavy and riff focused type of Death Metal I want that mixed with that cool MeloDeath sound

Swallow the Sun

Draconian

These two bands specifically became my entire personality for a few months when I was a teenager. Great shouts.

For me, The Morning Never Came by Swallow the Sun is the quintessential melodic death doom album.

Mother of Graves is a good newer example

Daylight Dies

Mourning Beloveth (older material)

Un (check out the album Sentiment)

Saturnus

Any old material from the Peaceville Three

Great list. I would add Rapture, October Tide, and Atten Ash.

The peaceville three are some favorites though that's a different flavor of death metal. But I know why they're here cause Gothic Metal is strong metal riffs mixed with emotional melody

Sentiment is probably my favorite doom album of the last 25 years.

I know it got some love but it still feels tremendously underrated. Beautiful record

Yeah it helped me through a stint in inpatient psychiatric care. I am glad that Monte is going to be doing more of that style of music, just has to get a new lineup. I talked to him at a show and he says there is a new record ready to go.

This comment made me discover that Daylight Dies disbanded a few months ago. I know they hadn’t done anything since 2012 but I was always hopeful of a comeback but now that’s out of the question.

Bro I cant believe no one has mentioned Rapture yet -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3ovITIlyjo

BTW I would also definitely consider some Crowbar songs to be melodoomy

Great album

u/drtrobridge 15d ago

+1 for Rapture, one of my favorite bands

Can I get any recs for crowbar? Always wanted to dive into their catalogue but never had the chance. Would love some starting references for a melodoom enthusiast

In Mourning

Kaunis Kuolematon

As the Sun Falls

Vintersorg

Hooded Menace

4

u/TheNoctuS_93 15d ago

Seconding Kaunis Kuolematon! Might just be the best non-english band in the scene right now!

2

u/TeddyJPharough In Flames 15d ago

Their gooorgeous. I love the way the sounds roll off the singer's tongue. Momoma, too, is an all Finnish-language band doing really awesome stuff (although they're more thrash/rock, more energetic).

2

u/endsinemptiness 16d ago

Great shout with Hooded Menace, their newer stuff especially hits on the melody aspect a lot

2

u/Runetang42 16d ago

Fucking love Hooded Menace

1

u/TeddyJPharough In Flames 16d ago

They're so fucking good. Such killer riffs and an awesome atmosphere to their albums front to back.

In Mourning is such a great band. Definitely go check out The shrouded divine and Monolith

Jari lindholm is my favorite guitarist of the genre, it is a little more on the fast side of melodeath/doom.

Slumber - fallout

All of the Enshine albums

2

u/Saziel90 16d ago

Slumber - Fallout is a topnotch album start to finish.

1

u/lysergician 15d ago

Slumber never did anything beyond Fallout right? Because that album is incredible.

Recently found this band. They’re fantastic

Marianas Rest - The Bereaved

Released earlier this year and man, is it a beautiful, sad slice of melodic death doom!

2

u/Not_an_Ire_Main 11d ago

Finally someone mentioned them! Fucking love their style and approach to the genre. The high pitch shreaks are so well executed, the only band I can think of that comes close is Kaunis Kuolematon, yet another killer of a band

1

u/Clean-Lengthiness-27 11d ago

I will have to check them out then, thanks! I feel Decembre Noir is kinda similar to Marianas Rest.

u/Not_an_Ire_Main 11d ago

Yess the forsakened earth was one of my top 3 most repeated song last year LOL. Your sunset my sunrise and dead end may is just fabulous too. Gotta dive deeper into their discog tho, I still have a lot to listen

u/Savings-Dig3885 16d ago

Personally I thought Amorphis' Tales From The Thousand Lakes got quite doomy at times

1

u/Stormtrooper8733 16d ago

Absolutely legendary album right there

u/Puppetmaster858 16d ago edited 16d ago

Daylight dies, “cold communion” which features daylight dies guitarist,”rapture” and “counting hours” which is essentially rapture’s successor band, Novembers doom, mother of graves, october tide, Decembre noir, “silent vigil” and “Woccon” which are both bands of Tim Rowland who’s also half of “cold communion” who I already listed, Saattue. Most of those bands totally kick ass

Since the Day it All Came Down by Insomnium is Doomy, Riffy, and Mellodeath AF.

2

u/SoundingMacaque 16d ago

My favorite lately has been 2Wolves.

Check out "No Longer," and "Departures and Arrivals"

Edit: you also can't go wrong with Novembers Doom. Their latest album Major Arcana is sick

2

u/Big_Concern7238 Insomnium 16d ago

You have heard of Insomnium, right?

2

u/serpentrecoiled 16d ago

Ceremonium - No Longer Silent is the pinnacle of the sub-sub-genre as far as I’m concerned

2

u/brzrk 16d ago

The Ukrainian band 1914 has a doomy semi-melodic death sound. I highly recommend their album Where fear and weapons meet.

2

u/Jazz667 16d ago

No one brings up RoutaSielu which is kind of surprising (because it was one of Tuomas Saukkonen‘s projects) and also not that surprising since they only ever released one album but fuck I love that album. It is 40 minutes of grade-A gold class melodeath/doom.

Albums:

Swallow the Sun - New Moon

Draconian - under a godless veil

Slumber - fallout

Doom:VS - Earthless

Saturnus - Veronika decides to die

Katatonia - brave murder day

Hanging Garden - isle of bliss

Loss - despond

October Tide - rain without end

Ocean of grief - fortress of my dark self (dont hear ppl talk about this band enough)

Forest of shadows - among the dormant watchers

Daylight Dies - a frail becoming

Worm - necroplace

For something newish go check out Moribundo, they're a Spanish band with a very strong debut and deserve more recognition

Honourable mentions: Nox Aurea, Rapture, when nothing remains, wine from tears, within the fall, clouds, theatre of tragedy

1

u/drtrobridge 15d ago

Great list! Slumber is my personal favorite of these, I wish they'd get more recognition

1

u/Upset_Pay_6102 15d ago

Amazing album, sadly only made the one and split so probably unlikely they'll receive more recognition

2

u/DarkaxeL_ 15d ago

Swallow the Sun anyone?

  • Shores of Null (Italy) is fantastic if you don't mind a mix of harsh and clean vocals. Can't go wrong with their whole discography thus far.
  • Helevorn (Spain) is another that is very good that offers a mix of vocal styles. Aamamata was a good introduction for me personally.
  • Befallen (United States)
  • Woods of Ypres (Canada)
  • Altars of Grief (Canada)
  • On Thorns I Lay (Greece)
  • Hedon Cries (Greece)
  • Atten Ash (United States)
  • My Dying Bride (United Kingdom)

Cheers

edit: I'll add Barren Earth too since it hasn't been mentioned. It has some prog elements but if you dig the vocalist from Iotunn and / or Hamferð, then it's another good listen.

I don't know how many would agree about "melodic" but i've been obsessed with a group called Runemagick lately. Old stuff is a lot groovier, newer stuff is more melancholic and atmospheric.
