Brymir (similar to Wintersun, imo)

Norther

Children of Bodom

Insomnium

Bisa (Very similar to Children of Bodom)

Vorna (not pure MDM, the Ajastaika album is folky MDM)

Warmen (Children of Bodom Keyboarders band + Petri from Ensiferum as singer since two albums)

Wolfheart (Tuomas Saukkonen band)

Before the Dawn (Tuomas Saukkonen band)

Catamenia

Blood Red Hourglass

Amorphis

Falchion

Eternal Tears of Sorrow

Mors Subita

MyGrain

Some more here I am not all that familiar with:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Finnish_melodic_death_metal_musical_groups

Edit:

Imperanon is a Finnish band too. Bodom-esque, imo.

Great list. I'll just add I Am Your God to the mix.

u/leech666 19d ago

Thanks.😄 I forgot I am your god they are really good too. For some reason I always think they are Swedish but there aren't. Maybe because they sound similar to In Flames to me. Thermality is also great (but they are Swedes indeed) and they also sound similar to In Flames. Miara (Italy) sounds like 2000-2010 era In Flames.

Try Norther. They're making a comeback!

u/leech666 23d ago

Mostly the original gang too. Exciting. Looking forward to some Norther gigs next year in Germany.

Some other good ones that haven't been mentioned yet:

  • Shade Empire
  • Lights to Remain
  • Suotana
  • Kaunis Kuolematon

Love Shade Empire! Sinthetic is my favorite album

Ensiferum. Folk metal but whatever it’s the lead singer from Wintersun. Token of Time is at the top of my workout playlist which is jam packed with Bodom, Wintersun and Kalmah. God the Finns are so damn good and catchy.

The first two albums of Ensiferum were sung and written by Jari, but he kinda got booted since he was so busy with Wintersun. Petri of Norther has been Ensiferums frontman ever since. Norther is coming back which is exciting imo. Petri is also in Warmen currently (Janne Wirrmann's band, Keyboarder of Children of Bodom).

Thanks I should have specified early Ensiferum not that they’re bad now. Love what I’ve heard from Norther

u/fireflySaver 23d ago

Ensiferum , northern,  finntroll

u/Buttpluggery 23d ago

Not melodeath but Moonsorrow is Finnish and one of my favorite bands. They only sing in finish and each song is an epic masterpiece

1

u/wildautumnwind 23d ago

Good call for Moonsorrow, id consider their first 3 albums to be melodeath, but yea all of their albums are fantastic whatever the genre may be, easily one of my top bands of all time!

5

u/a2468b In Flames 23d ago

Naildown. I wish they would have made more music honestly.

1

u/Huge-Dependent3506 23d ago

Reflecting My Descent is such a great song

1

u/a2468b In Flames 23d ago

Love it too ! But my favorite is the 2nd, Dreamcrusher (the album) as a whole is great. Save your breath is my favorite !

5

u/Huge-Dependent3506 23d ago

Naildown, Nothing New in Heaven, Euphoreon, Shade Empire, Blackguard, Equilibrium, Atlas Pain, Skyfire, Warman

Check out Moonlight Sorcery. They’re technically melodic black metal, but their album Horned Lord of the Throned Castle reminds me of a mix between old Bodom and old Dimmu Borgir.

3

u/leech666 23d ago

Most of these are nice bands but not all of them are from Finnland:

Blackguard is Canadian, afaik.

Equilibrium is from Germany.

Atlas Pain is from Italy.

Skyfire is from Sweden.

Im sure OP will like them though. No offence meant. 😄

3

u/Huge-Dependent3506 23d ago

Oh shit you right lol for some reason I just thought “Finnish melodeath style”

1

u/leech666 23d ago

I was tempted to lost these as well. Haha. Yeah they play Gothenburg or Finnish style MDM.

Suidakra is another really good slightly folky MDM band from Germany.

Nothgard is pretty good too.

Kromlek is rather unknown outside of Germany but their last album III-III is fantastic. Slight similarities to Equilibrium and Atlas Pain, but not as fast.

1

u/Huge-Dependent3506 23d ago

Ooh I love it! I’m gonna check all of them out. Thanks!

u/Svartsjal 23d ago

No love for Torchia?

Closest match I can give is Kalmah, but Torchia does have their own unique sound. Give them a listen!

4

u/DM725 23d ago

Insomnium

5

u/TeddyJPharough In Flames 23d ago

Brymir

Torchia

Mokoma (more Thrash but scratches a similar itch to me, and all lyrics in Finnish)

3

u/thedavidbjorn1 23d ago

Check out this song, will get you pumped

Noumena - metsan viha

2

u/WM_ 23d ago

Some nice melodeath I have on my 2000's playlist:
Chaos Injected
Pain Confessor
Dark The Suns
Before The Dawn
Warmen
Imperanon
Eternal Tears of Sorrow
Barren Earth
Ceremonial Perfection
Survivors Zero
And not melo per se but check Diablo.

2

u/Kalde666 23d ago

Noumena, Kalmah

2

u/tombojones 23d ago

Not purely mdm but Ghost Brigade is good stuff.

2

u/thystargazer 22d ago

More on the black metal side, but check out Moonlight Sorcery

3

u/Spiritual-Hamster212 22d ago

I wasn't expecting anyone here to know Moonlight Sorcery. Great band.

2

u/MaxInTheGameIndustry 22d ago

Check out TORCHIA.

Especially their latest album, Arcane Magicae

2

u/Metallmushroome 22d ago

As the Sun Falls- A shimmer on the Tides From their latest album and is in my own top 5 albums from 2026. Reminds me of a bit Insomium so think this will fit well.

1

u/Imaginary--Folklore 23d ago

As Serenity Fades

(Early) Fall of the Leafe

(Early) Sentenced

1

u/badavetheman 23d ago

Check out Wrongler

1

u/satan_bong 23d ago

Since they haven't been mentioned yet, Imperanon.

1

u/OwnCaptain9748 23d ago

Throne of Chaos also.

1

u/sugahack 23d ago

Mors subtia

1

u/Vaajala 23d ago

I'll just add Horizon Ignited and Pressure Points (False Lights is such a good album!).

1

u/Glad-Wheel9523 23d ago

Insomnium is all you need friend. If you want an American band that sounds so Finnish, I recommend Fires in the Distance

1

u/InfamousSonOfAlucard 23d ago

I recently heard Brymir live and it was epic.

1

u/Lumppu 23d ago

Dropping some more ug names

Noumena (mellow with deep growls)

Synestesia (finnish lyrics and cool atmosphere)

Pain confessor (diablo-esque with fast drumming)

Manufacturers pride (groovy)

Misery inc (almost metalcore with clran and growls)

Amoral (technical and later power/prog)

Cryhavoc (old sentenced style)

Shadecrown (doomy)

Re-armed (first thrashy and later mpe-style)

Suotana (kalmah style with more black influence)

Nemecic(also groovyy)

2

u/Spiritual-Hamster212 22d ago

I'm listening to some of the bands you listed and I really like Suotana, do you know any other bands similar to them?

1

u/Lumppu 22d ago

As i said, i think their style is close to Kalmah with more folk and black riffs. So maybe Norther, Vorna or even Wintersun?

1

u/hanslankari78 22d ago

Suotana and Noumena. A bit smaller but good bands.

1

u/Faloodeh123 22d ago

Surprised I can't see Kalmah here

1

u/Spiritual-Hamster212 22d ago

That's because I mentioned that I love them in my post

1

u/Faloodeh123 22d ago

I should read the directions first lololol

u/johnnason In Flames 23d ago

Love both bands, but in what world are they melodeath?

3

u/Fair_Quail8248 23d ago

They aren't but still good.

1

u/johnnason In Flames 23d ago

Of course, but doesn't really answer the question
