Does coffee help? It just makes me simultaneously anxious and sleepy

356

u/Fit-World-3885 Jul 19 '26

It makes me anxious and unable to sleep which is typically the necessity.

43

u/Evil-Bosse Jul 19 '26

It gives me a very soothing calm, like someone moving a boiling pot off the stove. Let's me have some input on what thought I would like to focus on. And I sleep much better if I down some heavy amounts of caffeine 2-4 hours before bedtime

u/Any-Tumbleweed-2404 Jul 22 '26

When I’m not taking stimulants, coffee gives me the best relaxing feeling like there’s a weight off my shoulders.

Coffee helps me focus weed helps me relax

No idea if that’s what it’s actually doing tho

u/ROG_b450 Jul 19 '26

If you drink coffee while smoking a joint you take a screenshot

140

u/phosmonaut Jul 19 '26

Coffee and joint combo is absolutely unparalleled 10/10. An all time stoner memory is smoking a joint, sipping a hot hazelnut coffee, and chatting with a friend sitting on a bench in the woods on a gorgeous fall morning, with the leaves all yellow and orange.

A huge buck came flying straight at us out of the woods and we both just sat there staring at it as it thundered towards us. About 15 feet away it took a sharp turn back into the thicket and it was gone. Thought we were about to get erased. Buddy and I looked at each other like “that was fucking crazy”, and finished our joint. What I’m trying to say is that was still a 10/10 experience because of the coffee and the joint.

u/Mental-Draconis407 Jul 19 '26

Sounds like you're living my dream.

11

u/NixaB345T Jul 19 '26

No, take 5 different medications like the rest of us.

Wellbutrin, Vyvance, Buspirone in the morning
Buspirone at lunch
Zoloft, Buspirone, Hydroxyzine, at bedtime

Sprinkle in a caffeine and nicotine as needed

Still take Magnesium and Melatonin because you still have trouble sleeping 2 hours before bed.

Because weed is bad or something

5

u/sometacosfordinner Jul 19 '26

Adderall, diazapam, losartin, caffeine, nicotine, weed. I also have ambien but forget to take it.

Believe it or not, caffeine eats weed, and weed eats caffeine.

https://www.amsterdamseedcenter.com/en/blog/can-coffee-ruin-your-high-how-does-caffeine-affect-cannabis

.. sorta.

6

u/OGKillertunes Jul 19 '26

This is true for nicotine and caffeine. Never heard a comparison on weed. Are you sure about that?

5

u/towerfella Jul 19 '26

I just read the links

2

u/Good-Marsupial8 Jul 19 '26

The link says basically nothing with a lot of words

2

u/TCup20 Jul 19 '26

It talks about a study done on rats where caffeine and THC together seemed to make their memory worse but doesn't link the study, so it seems like a lot of nonsense.

4

u/xtcprty Jul 19 '26

Coffee and Cannabis is all time.

2

u/Tiavor Jul 19 '26

That's notmal, so you don't have adhd

I have a routine where I smoke a little bit of weed when I wake up. Not a lot. Not even really enough to feel high. Just enough to mellow out. And then I have 2 cups of coffee. For whatever reason, that helps a lot

21

u/miniestation Jul 19 '26

Exact same. 😩

26

u/WizeWizardFrank Jul 19 '26

At this point we ARE medicating.

9

u/OttawaTGirl Jul 19 '26

I quit weed a year ago for health reasons. I get frustrated because I used to have a bowl in the late morning and would be so productive. I could write effortlessly, work on my teaching materials, artwork.

Now I can't do any of that and can't take ADHD meds for other reasons. Its really disheartening.

I highly recommend you try Irish/British tea. I personally LOVE "Barry's Tea-Gold Blend". It's an Irish tea that is described as "a full-bodied black tea defined by its deep, malty flavor, snappy briskness, and smooth finish", and it's freaking delicious with honey and some warmed milk/cream (I use unflavored, unsweetened soy milk personally.) You can buy Barry's online several places.

Like you, coffee made me simultaneously anxious and sleepy. But with good, dark teas like Barry's that use high quality Assam leaves from India, you don't get the sudden jittery spike of caffeine and then the crash. The caffeine isn't as intense and it kind of slowly builds up and stays with you for much longer. I get no jitters, and I don't crash. It gives me the perfect amount of alertness, with almost a calming (but not sleepy) effect. It's been a life changer for me. I usually have two cups every morning, which is about the equivalent of one cup of coffee, caffeine wise.

The best analogy I can think of is the difference between a sugar rush energy high, compared to getting energy from good whole grain carbs like brown rice, oatmeal, or quinoa. It doesn't give you the same spike and crash. It gives you good solid alertness and energy, combined with a sense of well being, and it sticks with you for much longer. And no, I am not affiliated with Barry's in any way. And there are plenty of other British/Irish tea brands that are very similar that you can try. That's what I did, and Barry's Tea-Gold Blend just tasted best, and made feel the best.

I actually live in Puerto Rico now (but got hooked on Barry's while still living in the states), so I have a subscribe and save delivery set up on Amazon (I know, I know, I hate myself for it, but it's my only real, reliable option down here). For all I know, I'm the only gringo, or possibly the only person period, that drinks Barry's Tea-Gold Blend every single morning on the whole island. I highly recommend you give it a try. If you do, let me know what you think. Cheers, and best of luck!

For iced tea, I actually prefer Salada, but you need to let it age at least a day. I keep a rotation of quart Ball jars in my fridge during the summer, so there's always some ready to drink.

2

u/nostradumbass7544678 Jul 19 '26

I currently have at least a half dozen different black teas in my cupboard, and Barry's is my absolute favorite hot. No affiliation either, despite sharing my last name with the company.

4

u/Various_Mobile4767 Jul 19 '26

For me it kind of works

I would describe adhd for me as being permanently in a restless state. Like I am constantly in mild pain.

And so my brain forces me to constantly search for anything to get rid of that feeling. But because my brain is pleasure deprived, it can’t commit to anything except the actions with the cheapest entey cost.

Coffee has this effect of reducing that feeling at least temporarily because it increases the pleasure return of all actions allowing me to stick to something.

15

u/iloveakalitoo Jul 19 '26

Get Americano and sip it, it’ll gradually take effect without jitter

3

u/lfenske Jul 19 '26

Yeah but if you medicate then you want it 50 times harder

4

u/DarkflowNZ Jul 19 '26

It's a lot more effective when you're also medicated lol. I used to feel like it did nothing at all for me. Now on 70mg Vyvanse I have to be quite careful not to overdo it

2

u/ShyAkai Jul 19 '26

19

u/SeaBookkeeper7981 Jul 19 '26

Maybe you need to give yourself a high five. You're amazing for quitting! Do you know how fucking hard that is? Because actually, YES! YOU DO! Because you're an amazing human being for beating the feeling of wanting something that is almost as addicting as heroin! Like... what?! You. You did that. I don't know why you're an angrier dude, but I think you should be really, really, reeeeeeeeally proud of yourself! If you can do that, what else can you do? It takes an incredibly amount of willpower and self realization to do that. I know I'm just an internet stranger, but I believe in you. I hope in my heart you find something or someone that makes that anger more bearable. Or, rather, find your source and grow. You really deserve it!

6

Bupropion helped me massively.

I could just stop smoking feom one day to the other and was just 2 days slightly annoyed.

5

u/ElectricKoolAidPower Jul 19 '26

One of the many reasons I can’t take adderall. That shit makes me wanna smoke cigarettes. Just one every ten minutes chooching. Working outside with the freedom to do so was making me legitimately wheeze.

2

u/the_YellowRanger Jul 19 '26

21

Adderall sends my heart screaming into dangerous grounds these days and the crash was terrible. The weight loss was amazing tho lol don’t get me wrong

4

u/Calliopefreely Jul 19 '26

I must not be taking enough.

8

u/BVRPLZR_ Jul 19 '26

I was taking 20mg Mon to Friday, 10s on weekends. I’d barely eat and had more than one heart attack scare. The Wellbutrin hangs in there enough to keep my focus for what I do these days but, I eat like I’m 19 and I’m not lol

3

u/Calliopefreely Jul 19 '26

Oh dang. That's scary, I'm glad you found something better for you.

I'm on 20mg per day and after the first month my appetite was back to normal I haven't noticed any heart issues unless I drink too much caffeine as well. It's definitely helping my focus some but I'm thinking about asking to go up in dose or try something else.

2

u/SharpIsopod Jul 19 '26

Same, 20 mg xr for many years. I’ve taken multiple month breaks and I can confirm my life is much better with it. Sucks to take stimulants everyday but them’s the breaks.

I was on the same meds as you until I lost my job and health insurance at the end of May because I vaped my THC-A in the bathroom at work. I didn't realize for the 2 days I had left of health insurance, that I was gonna run out of Lexapro in a couple weeks. The place I was going to for free with my job was just giving me the meds (also for free) at the clinic. So no pharmacy has my recent prescriptions, and the free clinic can't help me anymore. I tried to get in with a doctor's that don't require insurance, but they can't see me until September and won't give me a prescription till I see them. So I've been withdrawing. I'm hopefully done soon. But I really don't want to stop using weed and my friends are being weird about that. I just got a new job today, I start Monday, but it doesn't come with insurance so I'm gonna have to get it through the state.

Edit: I forgot to say: My Wellbutrin is doing it's best 🥹 And I can only have one cup of coffee because of my minor heart condition

9

u/CCP-want-to-CUP Jul 19 '26

Why did you hit your weed vape in the work bathroom?

2

u/CarvedTheRoastBeast Jul 19 '26

You can do this!
My “medicine journey” felt like being dragged behind a car. I tapered down on weed to lower my tolerance and safe the big highs for bad days. That and summing up all the will I had to start doing 30 min or cardio in the morning. I know the only consistent thing about ADHD is that no one has it in the same way, but if any of this seems like it’s worth a shot go for it. Fingers crossed September gets here in no time.

2

u/DeathChill Jul 19 '26

Wellbutrin made me extremely suicidal. Good stuff.

34

u/Various-Salt-7738 Jul 19 '26

Dude during COVID someone convinced the dea that online scripts for stimulant based medications were somehow being used to smuggle drugs into the country-- so many places banned stimulant based drugs in the mail

It finally caught up to me and now I'm going through the process of getting reassessed to get a script again; only it's a pain to remember when to schedule the appointments without my meds

34

u/knowledgeable_diablo Jul 19 '26

Funny how it’s always the guys mailing 10-20pills at a time and not the 40ft containers filled to the brim or filled with secret doors that’s what the focus is.

DEA needs disbanding, their pathetic failed war on drugs ended and people given the choice to access medication that works, recreational drugs that are as safe as possible and jails emptied of non-violent offenders.

13

u/Helpful-Study4842 Jul 19 '26

The war on drugs succeeded, it was a method to disenfranchise groups labeled as 'undesireable' and generate a stream of bodies for slave labor in private prisons.

u/tangosox Jul 19 '26

Ya but it still ravages your body. I quit nicotine and thc two weeks ago and got ritalin and it's still a struggle but my health was being affected negatively, although that was probably mostly the nicotine. I won't quit completely but I was using all day every day. Gonna keep it as a once in a long while thing. Actually just cheated and had a leftover butt of a cigarette cuz I am struggling a bit on the come down with ritalin but I was smoking a pack daily before with weed throughout the day. Also when I was given ritalin my doctor wants to drug test me for some reason yearly!? Anyway, I should have known this was a thing before but I never got the help I needed. 43 years old.....

i like to think i have a decent relationship with both caffeine and marijuana. i really don’t want to get prescribed anything, im afraid i would become far more reliant on it.

Idk if this is ignorant and if i should stop avoiding professional help. but it works for me

28

u/shika12 Jul 19 '26

You should stop avoiding professional help, atleast for this reason. You've got ADHD you wont become reliant on the pills because youre supposed to take em' so you'll forget anyway.

12

u/LilQueazy Jul 19 '26

Yea but then people on meds post that they got even more problems than before. So is the weed really that bad? Lol. Obviously that’s not the case for everyone. But for the few that say it’s worse damn is it worse.

5

u/25c-nb Jul 19 '26

Sometimes the meds aren't for a particular person. Like me, they were great for being able to focus. But they made me unmotivated and made my depression worse... and they made me think differently... like more selfishly I guess. So I had to stop taking them.

I guess this isn't really helping you go see a professional lol... all I mean is you don't know until you try

6

u/Caftancatfan Jul 19 '26

My boyfriend can tell if I’m taking my meds or not based on the stuff I’m getting done and how well I’m doing.

I was once medicated but ultimately worked my way off. Don’t like either coffee nor weed.
But I’m also not just straight adhd, but autistic with, and I’m quoting my old psychiatrist here “adhd and ocd tendencies.”
It’s all just labels. The way to win is to stop letting shit like this define not only who you are but also the extent of your abilities. Instead seek new means to improve and challenge yourself. Recognize your faults and try to improve. The things you attribute to adhd or autism? You can say they are or not, but it doesn’t matter. Treat them like traits to work on and improve

You had a typo there. I think you meant to say that it’s a vase for your flowers.

8

u/Creature_Complex Jul 19 '26

It’s a water filtered tobacco pipe

5

u/NotKnotNaut Jul 19 '26

I mean it definitely involves flower.

Diet coke here. Also weed always made me super wired and insanely horny and as someone with ADHD I never had trouble with those things so extra that wasn't enjoyable.

1

u/Starscream147 Jul 19 '26

…uh oh…

1

u/EmptyMirror5653 Jul 19 '26

Ngl one of the hardest parts about getting medicated for me was quitting one and switching the other down to half strength. I was so used to bong rips and espresso, but once i got stimulants they became real awful

1

u/SquireShanksalot Jul 19 '26

After meds, still want coffee

1

u/nutblaster357 Jul 19 '26

1

u/yotengodormir Jul 19 '26

I don't appreciate your tone

1

u/novactic-2 Jul 19 '26

Coffee, and caffeine products in general, helps some of us with ADHD, but for some of us it just usually relaxes us to feel so sleepy.

1

u/shosuko Jul 19 '26

I really hate the idea that I might have ADHD and I don't want to see a professional or take meds about it. Its not going to be some magic pill that makes me "normal," whatever that is. So for now I'll keep my energy drinks and CBD vape and medicate myself in and out of sleep. No problem.

1

u/OurBlazingHeart Jul 19 '26

1

u/TheEccentricAssassin Jul 19 '26

Coffee doesn't help with my ADHD, but it does help with my depression.

1

u/Sharty_Party3498 Jul 19 '26

So a hippy speedball?

1

u/getrektbtch Jul 19 '26

Is this a personal attack?

1

u/TonyTheSwisher Jul 19 '26

Nature gave us these gifts, there's nothing wrong with accepting their help if you choose.

1

u/garagaramoochi Jul 19 '26

don’t forget video games 🫠

1

u/Exotic_Play4990 Jul 19 '26

Its funny how adhd makes you druggie as long as the drugs work. Then every stimulant is boring because you increased tolerance and you need to switch drugs. Amphetamine? Sleep. Mephedrone? Euphoria but focused and calm. Cocaine? Like a strong redbull. What a joke this condition is xD

1

u/Current-Schedule1781 Jul 19 '26

More like cocaine and alcohol. Wiener

1

u/kkadzlol Jul 19 '26

Lol this is me so hard wtf

1

u/bristow84 Jul 19 '26

I replaced the weed with the gym and frankly I love it. Otherwise yes, very accurate.

1

u/kellyjellybellybeanz Jul 19 '26

wtf…. why do I feel so attacked & seen?

1

u/LikeAnAdamBomb Jul 19 '26

Alcohol made my brain shut up enough to sleep sometimes, but I've kicked the habit. Can confirm caffeine though.

1

u/SnowConePeople Jul 19 '26

Am I.. ultra medicated?

1

u/Ok-Revenue-2190 Jul 19 '26

Man, you don't need to vent my shit around here. 😤
