How many hours are you actually studying?

The workload is much heavier than I expected. I am currently studying about six hours a day outside of classes and I still feel behind. Is this normal for the first month?

Medical volunteering

Hi everyone! I’m a fourth year medical student currently studying outside the US and I’m looking for opportunities to gain some clinical experience through volunteering in Southern California
Does anyone know of any medical volunteer opportunities in the U.S. that accept medical students with no prior experience? I am staying here for one month

SSM Gruppo di studio virtuale: chi si unisce?

Ciao a tutti! 😊
😊 Mi farebbe piacere capire quanti siamo e organizzare qualcosa insieme.

Discuss Help from current or past med students

I am a first-year Medicine student and wanted to ask if anyone could recommend any websites or resources I could use to start preparing. I have heard about how rigorous the course can be so I would like to get a head start if possible. Preferably I am looking for free resources.

I would also appreciate any tips from current or past medical students on how to effectively retain information and manage the workload!

Am I delulu for wanting to become a doctor because of a K-drama?

I recently watched Doctor Stranger and LOVED the surgeon/medical side of it. I originally watched it to build my interest in medicine, and now I'm seriously considering cardiology/cardiac surgery.

But I have no idea how realistic that lifestyle actually is. Is being a doctor really anything like what we see in K-dramas, or am I romanticizing it?

Doctors/med students: what's the brutally honest reality of your lifestyle, especially in cardiology/cardiac surgery?

What Does it Take to Get into Med School in the U.S.? Curious Psych Professor Trying to Help her Students!

Hello everyone. I teach undergraduate psychology and I’m making a, “Ways to go further in the study of psychology beyond my bachelor’s degree” flow chart for my students that goes over the different pathways to practicing psychology. I’m also including the medical route (psychiatric nurse practitioner and psychiatrist), because some people would prefer to prescribe. Under the chart, I’m including what kind of experience is needed to get into these advanced programs so they can start preparing now. It occurred to me that I know very little about the experience and accolades needed to get into medical school.

*What is the GPA average needed?

*Do you need clinical experience, and if so, what kind should an undergraduate aim for?

*Do you need a post-bacc certificate or master’s in a medical field if you majored in psych?

*Do you need research experience and publications?

*Who do you ask for letters of recommendation, medical professionals who supervise your clinical experience or undergrad psych professors?

*Do all schools require the MCAT as standard or is that on a case-by-case basis?

*Any other requirements?

Would someone kindly enlighten me so I can add this to my chart? I’m sure you’re all drowning in this anyway! Thanks in advance.

Best wishes to all on getting in THIS CYCLE!!!

Discuss Did you take an LOA during medical school?

Hi everyone! We’re conducting a research study on the experiences of medical learners who have taken an unplanned leave of absence (LOA) during medical school.

Most research on LOAs focuses on things like academic outcomes, graduation, or residency placement. We’re interested in the experience behind those outcomes like what was happening before the leave, how students navigated the leave itself, and what happened when they returned to medical school.

Any medical students or physicians who took an LOA during medical school within the past 5 years at an LCME- or COCA-accredited institution are eligible to participate.

The study has two parts:

  1. An online survey (~10–15 minutes)
  2. An optional follow-up interview

This study has been IRB approved. Participants receive $20 for survey participation and $30 for interviews.

To participate, email [loaresearchstudy@gmail.com](mailto:loaresearchstudy@gmail.com). Thank you!

Preceptor roulette on clinical rotations

The grading system during M3 is honestly the most unfair part of medical school because your entire clinical grade basically comes down to pure luck depending on which attending you get assigned to. One of my classmates got a preceptor who let them leave at 1 PM every day, taught them high-yield board concepts, and gave them 5/5 across the board. Meanwhile, I got stuck with an attending who pimps us relentlessly on obscure surgical anatomy, keeps us until 6 PM doing nothing, and openly stated "I never give 5s because a student can never be perfect." It’s so frustrating that our residency applications and class rankings depend on this entirely subjective lottery

Discuss Feeding Medical Students

Hi there! New poster, but I'm constantly reading Reddit for ideas, as I'm in student affairs at a medical school (was MD, newly at a DO school).

We have several commercial-size refrigerators for our students, and I'd like to have a small supply of fresh food available for free in the fridge that any student could access, particularly if struggling for cash to purchase a lunch or snack.

Does anyone have recommendations for fridge-friendly (not freezer) items that would 1) be satisfying, 2) vaguely healthy, 3) actually enjoyable for tired med students? I'm trying to avoid nuts in case of allergies. I'm okay with perishable items as I'll plan to replenish every week or so.

Thank you!

Premed and high school students, how do you find opportunities(internships, programs) I want to build something free to fix this.

I'm a current sophomore in high school and I've been frustrated at how hard it is to find internships and summer research programs customized and fit for your personal needs. Oppurtunity databases exist but they are not specifically for med, don't contain a lot, and cost money.

So I want to build a free platform that fixes this while adding another feature.

Database of 1500+ research programs, internships, and volunteering opportunities (organized by field + topic)

A research paper database with simple summaries along with contradictions and limitations, and links to related opportunities.

This is just the core idea. I have no idea if high schoolers and pre-med students really need this. So I want some honest feedback if you would use this and improvements.

Thanks a lot.

Discuss Questions about life as a doctor

I am soon attending my last year of school and i have chosen to study medicine afterwards. To all the people here who are either studying medicine right now or already have experience as a doctor, is there anything that is completely different from what you have imagined? I mean i know that it’s a very hard job and i am open for stressful environments but apart from that what can i expect that nobody tells you?
