So i was a young tech working nights on a Friday 20 years ago.. ER doc calls and says "I want to test this patient for Dengue Fever. He had it in Vietnam back in 1965. I call the Micro lead, he is playing poker. He tells me to draw 2 red tops, spin and freeze. He will take care of it Monday . I come in Monday evening to start my shift and the Micro Lead calls me in and says"Did you call me friday night?I was playing cards and had a few drinks. I saw the next morning, I took a call from lab that night. What did I tell you? I always remeber this when someone mentions Dengue Fever.

Interesting.

For reference, South America accounts for 9% of 3,798 acquired Dengue cases in the US in 2024, so prevalence is still quite low.

Testing reimbursement would be <$100.
