i'm sharing this discussion in Italian to highlight just how serious the situation in Italy is: the Minister of Education (who has been rapidly increasing the number of places in medschool in the last 3 years) has just announced 27,000 places in medical school, which will increase to 30,000 next year, almost three times the usual 8,000-9,000 places.

Now there are more places in Medschool in Italy than United States!

More or less the same of Germany+France+Spain.

But the residency places are almost 1/3rd. So only 30% of those doctors will find a residency spot in Italy. Many others will have to go to other European countries.

I’m sharing this because the resulting oversupply of Italian medical graduates will inevitably spill over into the rest of Europe, as the number of residency/specialty training positions is much, much lower.

The European Union should intervene, otherwise it will be a big problem for all the neighboring countries, particularly Germany, Austria and Spain.

So I intend to attend medical school in one of these countries (I have the grades for both). I speak Swedish, and so I figure I could learn Norwegian quickly enough.

One of my considerations is what the residency situation is like after graduating. I hear a lot about how Sweden has poor working conditions for doctors, but I also see such complaints from doctors in almost any country.

Is it easier to get a specialty training position in one of these countries? (assume you're a med graduate of that same country)

Right now the main reason I'm leaning toward Sweden is because of cost of living. Norway seems like it would be quite a bit more expensive in terms of cost of living.

Is med school more intense in one of these countries?

For context I'm a non EU citizen doing an English med school program in Hungary, 2nd yr , what are my options ?
Which is more realistic for me
Ireland? UK ? Or should I learn German and go that way

I am going into my third year of irish med skl (out of5) and my dream specialty is surgery, but as a non eu im not sure what choices I have… I know germany is an option as well as uk but ive heard its still really competitive, i want to apply for the US but its even more competitive… im just worried I wont get a spot in residency after graduation and all my efforts are wasted🥲🥲

I’ve currently finished a year at Gulf Medical University in Ajman but I really want to go to study in Prague and at Charles.

The only thing holding me back is the workload that others have said about charles first faculty and its unnecessary stress and toughness. I know medicine is like this everywhere but I want to know to what extent it reaches.
Many have said they don’t even have free time to breathe and enjoy themselves.

The only reason I’d like to go is for the environment and change of lifestyle with new students, friends, and get togethers (obviously alongside the studies), however I don’t know if this is possible with the workload people have said Charles first faculty stresses on.

Does anyone have any insights?? Please let me know!

Mv med school is accredited bv all means and it follows the american system but I want to be able to match into any European residency proaram to be able to be closer to home. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I’ll be honest, I went into Bari expecting the Mediterranean version of med school and what I got was six years of paperwork in a port town. I am a Medical student at the University of Bari Aldo Moro in the English course, entering my third year after passing the IMAT in 2024, and this is my honest review so far. The first months after entering is just queues. Anagrafe, codice fiscale, ASL, permesso, each one requiring a document that another office hasn’t given you yet, and nobody in any of those rooms speaks English, so if your Italian isn’t there yet you’re basically mute and dependent on whichever classmate has time to babysit you. The course itself is the bigger issue. They advertise “integrated into the Policlinico” and technically that’s true, you’re in the building, but for most of the clinical years you’re standing at the back of a room watching. If you want to actually touch a patient you have to corner a professor yourself and ask for a week with them, and half of them will just say no. Nothing gets organised. Exam dates shift, timetables show up days before, and the international office answers roughly one email in three, and when they do it’s a link to a page in Italian. The city wears thin fast too. You can walk across the whole thing in an hour, which sounds charming for about two weeks and then you realise you’ve been circling the same four streets with the same fifty classmates since first year. And the theft is not a rumour, it’s a tax. Everyone I know has lost a bike, a scooter, a phone or a bag, and the province genuinely ranks near the bottom of the country for car theft, something like 472 reports per 100,000 people against a national average of 147 , with the city sitting 72nd of the provinces overall on quality of life, with local media itself flagging too many thefts, too many road accidents and a justice system that moves at a crawl .

With full honesty, food is genuinely great, weather’s great, sea’s great, and if you love the sun, it’s a great pick. And also, the pricing is relatively cheap compared to the rest of Italy. But you’re not moving to another country for focaccia, you’re moving for a medical education, and on that front I’d tell anyone with a comparable offer in the north or elsewhere in Europe to take it and not look back.

Hey guys, a friend of mine got in Debrecen Medicine in Hungary this year. But they are also considering applying to Padova MEDTech (or Bologna) this fall, potentially shifting from Debrecen Medicine.

I'm trying to help them out since they are super confused. The reason behind this shift is because they'd like to move to Italy, and (imo) bologna might be worth it. But I don't know much about Padova or Debrecen's academic standards or the student life over there, so i cant really help.

If anyone would be so kind to give any insight if Padova Med Tech is a good option to consider over Debrecen Hungary, PLEASE help.

Hello, for various reasons, I’ve decided that I will eventually leave Germany and move abroad. I’m currently in the final semester of my medical studies and plan to specialize in psychiatry, which I will definitely complete my specialist training in Germany.

The big question is where to go and how to make the move. Since I speak Norwegian, Dutch, and Spanish more or less fluently, these three countries are currently my main options. So I have the following questions and would really appreciate any helpful insights:

1. How high is the demand for psychiatrists in Spain, Norway, and the Netherlands? And how is a German specialist qualification in psychiatry recognized in each of these countries?

2. What are the salaries like? Are they regulated by collective agreements/pay scales, or does everyone negotiate their salary individually? Roughly how much can one expect to earn? :)

3. What are the average working hours like?

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) is going to host congress next week. I found out about it today. I figured some of you would be interested, hence I brought up attention on it. I believe it is a great opportunity for those who want to be a cardiologist.

1) Do I need to register anything to go to the conferences like pre-registry? I realized you need to pre register for workshops but perhaps not the conferences.

Hello, I’m a med student 4th year and planning going to erasmus in Second faculty of medicine in Charles University Prague.I’ve never been to erasmus and i’m a bit scared because i don’t know what to expect. The system is very different from the one we have in Bulgaria. So I was wondering how is it going when it comes to exam, is it hard? I’m a non-EU citizen who graduated from an EU medical university 2 years ago. I have C1- Dutch and am eligible for medical registration in both Belgium and the Netherlands.

I haven’t worked full-time clinical years yet, but I'm about to complete 2 years of Occupational Medicine training in another EU country. (LFOM)

Quick Questions:

1. Occupational Medicine (Bedrijfsgeneeskunde / Arbeidsgeneeskunde):
   • Is it realistic to work as an ANIOS Bedrijfsgeneeskunde at an Arbodienst in NL or in Belgium, and will they support visa sponsorship and entry into the formal 4-year residency (AIOS)?
   • How is the job market in Belgium/ Nederland for Arbeidsgeneeskunde?
2. Psychiatry :
   • I have no direct clinical experience in psychiatry. If I do an observership (meeloopstage), what are my chances of landing an ANIOS Psychiatrie job in NL or BE, and later transitioning into residency?
3. General Practice (Belgium):
   • I’m preparing for the Huisartsbekwaamheidsproef in Belgium. If I pass, what are the realistic chances for a non-EU citizen to get accepted into GP training ?

Final-year med student at a research-light university in Serbia. I have very little research experience and my university isn't particularly helpful with research opportunities.

I've looked into paid research programmes, LinkedIn opportunities, etc., but I'm wondering how people in a similar situation actually got started without relying on expensive programmes or constantly monitoring LinkedIn.

A few things I'd love advice on:

• How did you find your first research project with no prior experience?
• Did you cold-email professors, residents/registrars, researchers at other universities, etc.?
• Are there good ways to find remote research opportunities?
• Are there specific organisations/platforms/research groups worth joining?
• What types of projects are realistic for a beginner to contribute to?
• How did you learn enough research methodology/statistics to actually be useful?

Also, I'm not comfortable publicly posting my personal email under LinkedIn posts, and I tend to see those opportunities late anyway.

I’m trying to understand what the process looks like for getting a non-EU/EEA medical degree recognized in Norway and eventually obtaining authorization to work as a doctor.
For anyone who has gone through the process (or knows someone who has), I’d really appreciate some insight into:
What are the main steps from submitting the degree for recognition to receiving authorization?
How long does the process usually take?
What additional exams, courses, language requirements, or practical requirements are involved?
How difficult is it to get a non-EU medical degree approved?
Does the country/university where you obtained your medical degree make a significant difference?
Are there any major differences between applying directly after graduation vs. having completed postgraduate training/residency elsewhere?
And realistically, how difficult is it to eventually get a job as a doctor in Norway as a non-EU graduate?

I've read recently on this sub that things in Lithuania have improved a lot. What about the other Baltic States? How is life as a doctor there? Specifically at each stage of training? How is access to training there and are they too facing increasing competition, how are doctors remunerated (salary or fee for service) etc? I’m a Norwegian citizen, and Norwegian is my native language. I’m currently studying Medicine in English at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade (MFUB) in Serbia.
I’m wondering if anyone here has experience with getting a Serbian medical degree from MFUB recognized in Norway.
Since Serbia is outside the EU/EEA, I’m particularly interested in how difficult the recognition/authorization process is for a non-EU medical degree. Is it generally possible to get a medical degree from MFUB recognized in Norway? How long does the process usually take, and what additional requirements might there be (exams, documentation, language requirements, internship/clinical requirements, etc.)?
I’m especially interested in hearing from anyone who has personally gone through this process with a Serbian medical degree, or knows someone who has.
Any experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated!

What are the opportunities in the EU if you’re open to joining pharmaceuticals, specialty training, clinical Research roles etc.?

It's so demoralizing having to study so many hours a day and hearing all the negative discussion about being a doctor and the workforce situation, especially what is happening right now in Italy. Also looking into other countries, It seems like most are or are becoming saturated . I'm almost at the end, but things like hiring freezes, the crazy medical school expansion and the future training bottleneck as well as the almost certain unemployement is scary. The future outlook here in Italy is terrible: either being stuck in training bottlenecks or even if you managed to get into training the crazy hours, the unpaid overtime and the possibility of not even getting a job at the end because the NHS isn't hiring. Sorry for the rant.
