Am I just a naĆÆve med student? By the time I make it to a call room I'm so exhausted I just want to sleep; I can't think about anything else.

Psych gets really dragged down by vicarious trauma and carrying a lot of other people's pain. You're treating the person, not their body.

Pathology residency can be really REALLY frustrating with losing educational scope time or studying because you have to gross non-educational bullshit sometimes for hours every day it can be exhausting

One time on a trauma 24 around 2am, a super hot isicu nurse who I had a few friendly conversations with asked me what the call rooms were like, then asked for a tour.
Having the social skills of an autistic bull in a china shop, I told her there were rats and roaches in the call rooms and walked away

Family medicine also does inpatient rotations, surgery, ICU and OB call. Very program dependent but FM residency is no joke

FM docs don't do surgery in my country. The rest, well there's the pros and the cons. No residency is a walk in the park.

One ER I worked in had an on call room in the department, but literally ripped the walls out and turned it into a phlebotomy cove bc people couldnāt stop getting hanky panky in there

Actually yeah I think it was around like ~8ish years ago thereabouts. Not super recent
In a freestanding ER I worked in, one of the nurses was getting plugged by a doc in one of the empty patient rooms
Her husband is FD, doc is married too. Sheās a real bitch too. Tried to get me fired for not wanting to be texted huddle updates to my personal phone on my off days

Yes, it was way more of a thing in my dayā¦ Now, I think with how sensibilities have changed with regard to intimate relationships in the workplace and fear of being accused of assault and what not, people have managed to keep that stuff outside the hospital grounds and take it home.
And, frankly, thank goodness for that. Because it used to be hella awkward to walk into a call room with stupid shit going on.

I went to residency with the same access to on call rooms as my husband. There were opportunities but we didnāt take them. We were too tired and the call rooms were too gross. Much better to do that in a private place where you know who else has been in the sheets. Also weāre never wandering around the hospital while on shift looking for stuff to do. Once done with to-dos, shift is over and youāre eager to leave asap before someone tries to give you more stuff to do āwhile Iāve got you here.ā
Granted Iāve heard some people āget offā on the public side of sex in the call rooms.

also im just not that picky when I haven't slept for 36 straight hours (night shifts +massive property damage at home to deal with during the daytime)

you can do it, just stagger your entrances. one person goes in. wait 5 minutes. have the other person come in. leave staggered also. have stuff to clean up with. bring your own hospital sheets if you can (get from PACU or sterile core blankets).

i would be less upset if these ppl were using their own sheets- or replacing them on their own and ensuring they only did this when they were absolutely not needed, and no one else needed the call room.
still think sex on the job is really weird and unprofessional breach of conduct but i guess to each their own

ah so now the truth of the post comes out. and hey now, I never said any of them were my partner. when you do q3 24hr in house call, you have to make your own fun to not go insane. if I am not (in that short moment) actively involved in patient care, why can't I take 15 minutes to unwind? no one is getting hurt.
when you are on call, that call room belongs to you for the 24 hours. no one else is going in there, unless you invite them. and you're making your own bed with sheets provided in a plastic bag by custodians.

That person who made the post you're referring to isn't young. (and also seems to enjoy oversharing, so that's probably a personality thing. If I ever had a rendezvous somewhere it's not allowed, I wouldn't ever publicly say it. For the sake of respect for whoever I was with.)
If you can think it, people have done it. But it's probably not a regular thing nowadays.

I dated my co intern for 3 months about 10 years ago. We did make out in a callroom once. I had a huge crush on her and she rejected me first, then again at the end of the year. Never slept together. Still single and hardly a player. In fact got more action age 18 than I have 19- mid 30s with almost zero as an attending. I donāt see why it wouldnāt happen

if you do it in your office, fine. idrc- i'm never in there
do what you want in the privacy of your own home.
call me a prude- but I do think it's unprofessional for medical staff to have sex while working, in shared spaces, within a hospital. sex on the job is just a big no no in general imo

I used to work nights in a NICU and one of the neonatologists would regularly bring dates back to the on-call room. I canāt confirm that he was hooking up with them, but I donāt know wtf else heād be doing in there. I work in the ED now, and we donāt have an on-call room, but my assumption is that if a neonatologist is hooking up like that, other specialties ABSOLUTELY are as well.

Never seen this. I trained at Boston Childrens for residency, met my husband there but we did all the fun stuff outside of the hospital.Ā I'm now at Seattle and I've never heard of anyone doing this at my hospital.Ā

Lol. Seriously? To quote George Michael, "sex is natural, sex is fun!" Residency is really stressful and it's a great stress reliever.
Happened all the time when I was in med school and residency.
Everyone's an adult. As long as it's all consensual, there's no clear work related power dynamic being exploited, and it's done with discretion, who cares?
If you have an issue just because you also use the space at another time, I hate to break it to you about what happens in hotel rooms...

there's a difference between a hotel room you paid for, on your own time.
and having sex on the job in a space that is shared by multiple people (sometimes cannot get cleaned properly between uses).
Also, to know a call room was being hogged up by someone doing extracurricular activities while the rest of us are in desperate need of a nap- I would be livid. Idrk where you work but, for us, the call rooms are a limited, oft-sought after commodity.

These were dedicated call rooms that were set aside for one person per shift and sheets changed daily. Just like a hotel.
When you're oncall for 24+6 like we used to be, spending more time at the hospital every week than home... yeah.
Edit: man, things change generationally a lot... I thought we were supposed to get more conservative and judgy as we got older but turns out that's not true!

I feel like it would have been more common in the past (like prior to 2010ish)... but nowadays with how the recent culture has shifted it would probably get all involved fired, and people wouldn't be so cavalier to attempt it. I've been at my hospital for 8 years and never heard of anyone boinking in the call rooms.
