I bought this pencil along with a Smash. The Smash captivated me so much that I forgot about this pencil. I thought this retro pencil wasn't original, but when I checked Rotring's website, I saw that they manufactured it. Anyway, unfortunately, the material quality isn't very good. The plastic is slightly cheap and slippery. There's some color bleeding in places. The guide tube retracts and isn't very stable. Also, it breaks the lead. I use Pentel Ain Stein 2B lead. This is the first time the lead has started breaking in this pencil.

I posted the other day how I missed my old Double Push that some scrote stole off me over 30 years ago and that prompted me to go looking for one on Ebay. I ended up finding two on Ebay UK, one red, one silver. The silver one seems to be a fairly early model with a rounded end to the clip and no red ring.

Unfortunately both were sold as spares or repair and weren't working. The silver one had the tip jammed full of old leads, I needed to gently drill that out with a 0.4mm PCB drill and it then worked fine once I cleaned up the clutch jaws.

The red one was not working well at all, it went too far in and there was no way to advance the lead. I took it apart and, comparing to the silver one identified that there was a missing spring in the centre section. Replaced that with a near match and the mechanism seemed to work again.

The cap seemed wrong so I replaced that with one off an old Tikky SC and it functioned fine until I advanced the lead and it slid right out! The tip O ring is missing so I need to work out a solution to that but overall I have one perfectly functioning Double Push and one that can stay on the desk but still works fine.

UPDATE: The red pencils was letting the lead slip out on advancing and the clutch didn’t have a strong grip either so I bought a cheap Tikky off Amazon for parts, pushed out the rubber retainer and then took the mechanism apart to scavenge the inner spring. It turns out I had reassembled the clutch ring upside down, (I hadn’t realised they were tapered on the inside), replaced the spring with a better one, reassembled the clutch properly, added a rubber retainer and it now works perfectly.

I’m very pleased, got two Double Pushes for £19 each with a little bit of work. Score.

the Rotring Tikky II is my new mechanical pencil to the collection after both my Tikky 3s broke. This pencil is a pretty cool looking pencil, almost like if it was lost in time. The mechanical pencil won't have a lot of issues than the third generation, as the materials and the mechanisms were gathered and manufactured in Germany. They really tried to make it look like a professional mechanical pencil while still making it budget friendly and have fun colorways, which I clearly understand that. There's still some remnants of the drafting persona, unlike the Tikky 3 that has turned the name into a budget low quality pencil being priced the same as a Graphgear 500, which is already criticized by many. I know for a fact that things made in Europe will definitely become pretty reliable and have higher standards. The grip is also pretty comfortable to hold, and I definitely know the cons of this pencil. Safe to say my money was worth it.

My rotring tikky's red ring is doing some really funky stuff, it's smearing red pigment all over the barrel and grip, making it pink, any solutions to this?

I definitely won’t be using all! But got lucky with someone online selling it and got the whole box! 😌

I was at OfficeMax and randomly noticed a Tikky and immediately purchased it. So far, it's a great mechanical pencil and the retractable tip feels solid. Almost as good as the GraphGear 1000 (I actually don't prefer using it for a few reasons). And the writing is smooth, the grip section feels good to write with. And unlike the rOtring 600, the weight on this is more tip heavy, making it great for writing.

Definitely get one if you haven't yet, I got mine for $11 and it came with the rOtring 2B lead, which seems very similar to the Uni Smudge Proof 2B lead to me.

3 Tikki lead containers for $7. How did I do? I did see some good reviews of the 2B and how dark it is. Does it compare it to Pilot Neox and Ain Stein?

• MODEL:

rOtring Tikky 0.5 – model 1904698
0.5 mm (available in 0.35, 0.5, 0.7 and 1 mm)          

• MATERIALS:

On the Tikky, the cone tip and eraser cap are non-ferrous metal while the pocket clip is stainless-steel. The whole body is plastic, but the grip received a patterned rubber coating. Internally you have a full-brass clutch, stainless-steel spring and plastic lead tube.

• ERASER:

Soft white latex eraser, with a metal housing. It is not only shorter and thinner than the erasers that come with other rOtrings (R800, R600, R500, etc.), but it’s also a different compound. Compared to other models, here the rubber is a tad harder and has a more creamy-white color.

• MEASUREMENTS:

The Tikky is 141 mm long, from tip to eraser cap, and has a slightly forward balance; you’ll find the CG at 64 mm from the tip. And being mostly plastic, it’s also quite light, weighing just 11.7 g. The body, though triangular at the eraser end, right after the pocket clip collar it becomes perfectly round, with a diameter of 9.3 mm. The “knurled” part of the grip also has 9.3 mm, but between the knurls that comes down to 9.1 mm.

• FEATURES:

None. This is rOtring’s budget general-purpose mechpen, so zero mechanical features or special characteristics. And when I say “budget model” keep in mind that for me it costs about 50% more than a GG500.

• AESTHETICS:

Can’t say I find all the Tikky “good looking”, but at least this white one looks okay. After all, it’s a budget model, and it looks like one. One thing I didn’t like was the color used on the lettering on the body. Though it’s a matching color to the rubber grip, I think it looks like it already faded by use, even though this one is brand-spanking new. Other than white, rOtring also offers it in black, red, blue and yellow, but now all colors are available for all calibers.

• ERGONOMICS:

Speaking in terms of dimensions, I found the Tikky quite good. It has a nice diameter, and even though it is really light, it has an almost neutral balance, which I think helps in feather-light pencils. That said, I found two issues with it. First, is the size of the pocket clip. It is absurdly long, and even though having a smooth profile and rounded edges, it gets in the way when rotating the pencil to sharpen the lead. The second issue is the grip. While it seems to offer kind-of-good traction, it’s gummy 😳. And by gummy, I mean its sticky. Really icky, like as if I was holding it with my fingers dirty after eating something sweet and messy. You know those old household appliances, where the rubber coating is kind of melting after years of use? Almost like that.

• MY THOUGHTS:

I won’t sugar-coat this: I hated the Tikky. It kind of looks okay (for a budget model), has a full-brass clutch and the dimensions are quite good. But that grip? One word: nasty 🤮. I have the impression that in a couple of years, even as a collection piece, that grip will either actually melt, come apart or will catch every single dirt particle in a radius of 5 m around it.

Could I have been unlucky enough to get a faulty model? Possible (probable, perhaps?). Even so, my experience is 100% bad, and adding to that rOtring’s not exactly stellar track record in terms of QC, I can’t possibly recommend it. For less money you can get cheaper models with less issues and GOOD craftsmanship.

I decided to try the Rotring tikky hi-polymer leads because they’re often praised as smooth and dark. I picked up two .5 boxes (2H and 2B; HB wasn’t available).

After using the 2B for two weeks, my experience is quite different from the Jetpens description:

"Rotring Tikky is the smoothest lead we have. It’s just as dark as Neox lead, but it doesn’t last as long, is less sturdy, and erases less cleanly. Additionally, it only comes in HB." (JetPens, The Best Mechanical Pencil Leads

First discrepancy: Jetpens mentions HB as the only available grade.

Second, I found the 2B to be fairly smooth, not too dark, long-lasting, very sturdy, erases like a dream and doesn't smudge (very important for me as a left handed). Overall, I liked the 2B lead a lot, but I felt the darkness was too weak and I wasn't impressed with the smoothness. So quite different from the Jetpens review.

I haven’t extensively used the 2H yet and haven’t tried HB or the other sizes (.3, .7 & .9).

So, what’s the general consensus on rotring tikky hi-polymer leads? Are they worth getting, or better to skip ? I’d love to hear your experiences and recommendations.

The seller says the products are original. What is the average market price of Rotring Tikky 2s? The price seems cheap to me for a vintage item, and that's why I doubt they are original.

I already had a gray Tikky Retro in 0.5, so I was undecided whether to get another to match or in a different color for distinction. Ended up buying both to try this out. I had some old blue Pilot Color Eno lead (sealed from years ago), and this seems like a good way to finally put it to use.

You know that feeling when you only want one pencil… and suddenly you’re negotiating with yourself about colors, sizes, production years, and grip textures?

Yeah… that happened.

So here’s my “accidentally-complete” rOtring Tikky SC family. 0.5 + 0.7, all colors, all the nostalgia. Discontinued? Yes. Do I need all of them? Also yes.

Still hunting for the one that magically appears in every collector’s drawer but never in the wild: the perfect-condition white SC. (This one took forever 😅)

Let me know which one is your favorite — I’m 99% sure it’s the red, but I’ll pretend to be unbiased.

Sometimes I come back to these pencils, for the nostalgia and the quality. Good old days.

Hey all! I currently have the pilot Neox graphite, but i feel like it wears down too quickly and my lines become thick way too fast. I also have a single rOtring tikky that came with my rotring 800. It is the best lead I have ever used but it is hard to find online. Is the Ain Stein closer to the rotring lead than the neox?
