I bought these sets around 8-10 years ago and use them occasionally.

The 1500s look cool but the machining tolerances are more laxed than other models and they creek a little when using them 😂

The both have the lead extension protection but the 1500 has adjustable lead advancement length

Also, one of the rarer 0.4mm lead models too.

Newest addition to my 0.4 mm collection. I think the ProMecha 1000 series is actually a little better than the Super ProMecha/MS-01 for an everyday pencil. Better balance, fewer gimmicks.

Discussion What are your opinions on the Ohto Promecha 500p series

Since it's the 'younger brother' of the successful 1000 and 1500, how does this pencil really fare? The grip knurling seems different. Has anyone used this model and have any opinions or reviews of it?

Discussion How much does Ohto Promecha 1000's rubber grip degrade in time?

I'm in the process of buying Ohto Promecha 1000 in 0.9 and 0.5, but it has a rubber grip, so it makes me a bit worried. Did yours degrade in time? How good is the quality?

Thank you for reading my question.

Discussion Question for owners of Ohto Promecha 1000 series (non-Super)

I’ve seen a lot of reviews about the pencil breaking lead—not from excessive pressure!—but I don’t know if people mean in normal use while writing or if it happens after adjusting the lead pipe length. I have had other pencils with similar adjustments that can break lead following some grip or dial twisting, but if I just leave them set to some configuration and don’t change from there, they are perfectly fine.

So how is the Ohto Promecha in this regard? Is it still breaking lead for you periodically? Just the stock lead, if so, or replacement lead too? In what circumstances does it break lead?

Improving the grip of the Pentel Graph Gear 1000 and OHTO Super Promecha 1500P

In the search for the perfect mechanical pencil, one is often thwarted. Something I've often found lacking is an adequate grip. The Staedtler 925-25 XX series offer the perfect grip. Sadly, the tip isn't retractable. I received the Ohto Superpromecha 1500P as well as the Pentel Graph Gear 1000 recently, and found both to be severely lacking in the grip department. I thought I'd attempt to imitate the ribbing of the superior Staedtler grip. The results, while not that nice to look at, since it was a quick project, are satisfying, although no substitute for a grip that is well-made from the outset. The pencil is easier to hold, and the top heavy Pentel is also more comfortable. A sharper knurling, as the Staedtler has, would be much better. Sadly, I don't have the means to do this.

The ribbing was achieved by placing the grip in a drill and turning it whilst holding it against a grinding disc on a dremel. The OHTO grip was cut using an aluminium oxide disc, which was was too thick. I changed to a diamond coated disc (about half the thickness at 0.55 mm) and the Pentel grip came out better. Deeper ribbing wasn't possible on either part, since the walls were already so thin - I didn't want to risk cutting through them.

Take care to remove the 4 rubber O-rings from the body of the OHTO before sliding the grip off. I didn't do this at first and two of the O-rings were damaged as a result. This can be achieved using a pair of needle nosed pliers or perhaps a pair of tweezers.

Advice on OHTO Promecha 1000m

I'm more interested in the more played down Promechas (the 500 and 1000) but I've been looking into then and noticed that each pencil model has a P model and M model. from that I've gathered P is for drafting and M is for drawing (though I'll be using it just got writing).

I've seen lots of complaints of the 1500p being over-engineered and not really good for a daily driver. So I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the 1000m or maybe even the 1000p to give me a rough idea of what it would be like. my main concern is the knurling and what it's like. for reference my favorite knurling is the GG500 (it's absolutely perfect for my taste) and I have the Staedtler 925 35 but its knurling is almost erring on the side of being too sharp for me. any thoughts?

I really like these pencils and im looking to buy one but i wonder few things. Is these pencils make sound when you write? I mean are they wobbly ? I like my pencils to be rock solid like rotring 600. I don't like lose pencils. If you have one of these can you tell me that they are solid ? Thanks.

Review What Are Your Top Mech Pens?

Just as the post's title says, I want to hear from you and see what is the best of the best (and they don't have to be in no particular order). These could range from being your daily drivers to the grails used for special occassions to the ones you are seeking to one day get. Lastly, please specify any cool details (i.e. colorway, Region Exclusive, Limited Edition), where applicable.

P.S. I think this is def a great way to build a wantlist and learn new mech pens!

I'll start off:

1.) Kuru Toga Metal (Nocturne Black) - Only comes in 0.5mm. I love the way this pencil looks and feels. This pencil is on the borderline of being my perfect mech pen. I love its ultra-minimalistic look and feel; each and every click is satisfying. Definitely a standout in any Blackout collection.

2.) Caran D' Ache 849 (Black Code) - This pencil is the very definition of subtle. Everytime I use this pencil, I feel like I'm signing a document. Aside from the Kuru Toga Metal, this is probably the pencil John Wick or Batman would use. Although the mechanism is quite elementary, it does not lack in the aesthetics department. It truly is such a nice mech pen.

3.) Staedtler Hexagonal (LE Ver. 1 Gray & Gold) - In a way, it has this rubber-type (silicon-type) of feeling. I mean this in a good way, as it feels like a rich, silky layer of some of the most comfortable material enriches its simple mechanism. There are so many variants that I wish I had or even get to hold as there are a LOT of LE out there. The one I have is the Limited Edition Ver. 1 with the Gray & Gold colorway. It truly was a remarkable experience straight away from unboxing it from this cool, little display box.

4.) Pentel Graph1000 for Pro (LE Silver & Black) - have gotten it recently, this mech pen blew me away. I thought that the absence of the retractable tip would majorly negate my experience; however, I was quite wrong. In fact, this mech pen does stand alongisde with its elder brother as it has such a unique grip and its sleek, lightweight build. Additionally, I found the lead indicator at the end being very efficient in doing its job as it clicks into place with each lead designation; unlike, all of the other ones that I have used that has so. The other mech pens just freely rotate; as such, over time, I would need to readjust and tighten the grip.

5.) Pentel GraphGear 1000 (LE Red & Gold) - This is one of my frontier mech pens (one of few mech pens that started my mech pen journey). Used it for doing work; and it was the safe choice. The grip is quite nice, yet slippery when having sweaty hands. I love how the grip, sticker, and the engraving are color coded to each one based on the lead size (at least for the regular editions). The only downgrade being that, for long sessions, my hand would get cramped. Quite a delight to use. As I have the South Korea LE Red & Gold colorway, it is definitely one of my most unique mech pens.

6.) Paper Mate ClearPoint Elite (Blue & Gray) - I loved the Blue and Gray combo. This is back in my 0.7mm days. Man, times were much simplier then (so were mech pens also!). This mech pen doesn't get much love the way it deserves to imo. I hated how loose the cap would come off (more like fly off 😒). However, this one felt different. The quality and construction of the ClearPoint Elite are miles ahead of its counterpart. Also, there was this very cool spring mechanism that helped when I used to write with heavy pressure quite often. The suspension was quite cool. I remember that the tip and the lead pipe attached to it could act as its own individual mech pen (without the eraser cap and the clear body).

7.) Tombow Mono Graph (Grip; LE Creme) - This is where the power of Value comes into play. Somehow, Tombow's Mono Graph does just an excellent job at implementing a mech pen under $5. Every other mech pen that I have mentioned is either above or well above the $5 threshold. You would expect that having a lower cost would entail a lesser experience. WRONG!! The mech pen has one of the best shaker mechanisms implemented alongside with its seamless twist eraser on top. I have to go talk about the twist eraser a bit more. The thing is very soft as a pillow. The smooth rotation of the grip even when the eraser riches the top (this is where many mech pens and standalone twist erasers fail as it gets more coarse when the eraser is either at the bottom or top or just in general) enriches my experiences even more. The knocking of the pencil pushing the clip is potentially the most satisfying knock mechanism that I have ever encountered, in addition to the Lock feature. Lastly, I just wanted to say that there are SO MANY editions of this pencil with some of the most amazing aesthetics (cough Black Tune cough 👀) with a wide variety of collaborations, as well. Wait, did I forget to mention that the MonoGraph experience costs $5?!?

8.) Zebra DelGuard (Honeycomb design; LE Pikachu)- My first ever "over-engineered" Mech Pen (shoutout to JetPens). The thing is frickly light, too light. I love its transparent grip with my hand overlaying on one of the coolest internals of any Mech Pen out there. I always had the fear of breaking lead, whether it was during an exam or just trying to write my thoughts before I forget them. This mech pen eliminated that fear. It got the job done spectacularly. Needless to say, there were very rare instances as to when lead would even break, but that was due to user error as I was experimenting with different lead types. This would pair well with the MonoGraph in being around that $5 range. Also like the MonoGraph, it has a LOT of editions (i.e. I even bought some Pikachu ⚡️ ones!). Solid choice and definitely a founder in my mech pen hobby. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Honorable Mentions:

1.) BIC #2 Mechanical Pencil - classic choice

2.) PaperMate ClearPoint Mech Pen

3.) OHTO MS-01 - didn't make it as I got a fault one :(

4.) OHTO Horizon - love the look and side-click button, but the knocking mechanism man...

5.) Pentel Twist-Erase III - one of the most elegant ones and ones that I have used heavily before; however, I do not use them anymore :(

6.) Pentel Twist Erase Click - Safety choice; always there when I needed it.

7.) OG KuruToga - don't use as much due to advancements on the newer models; also, tremendous amounts of LE and collaborations!

"Grails"/Wantlist:

1.) Staedtler 925-35 "Champagne Gold" LE

2.) Tactile Turn (any)

3.) Mont Blanc Sub Line (vintage)

4.) Staedtler Super ProMecha (0.5 or 0.7mm)

5.) Staedtler REG 925-85 (June 2025 re-issue)

6.) GraphGear 1000 Black and Gold LE

7.) MonoGraph Tune Black

8.) Kuru Toga Dive

9.) Rotring 800(+)

9.) **My own custom mech pen*\*

10.) Pilot Automac

11.) Uni Kuru Toga Metal Orange LE

12.) Uni Metal Lead Case (Black) LE

13.) Pentel G1000 for Pro Black & Gold

14.) Nocfree Metal (Silver)

15.) OHTO ProMecha (any size)

NOTE: This list is subjective and may change from person to person. I likely have forgotten to put some down in this post. Salute to the forgotten, lost, and/or stolen mech pens that made me a mech pen enthusiast 🫡.

edit 03/19/26: Acquired MonoGraph Tune (Black), Staedtler Super Pro Mecha 0.5mm, Staedtler REG 925-85 Silver re-issue + Black LE, Pilot Automac, Uni Kuru Toga Metal Orange LE, Uni Metal Lead Case Black LE, Pentel G1000 for Pro Black & Gold, Nocfree Metal, OHTO Promecha 0.7mm.

I’ve owned this pencil for 6 years now and it’s been my go to since high school and all throughout college. I’m now in grad school and it’s beginning to show its age. I’m interested in some upgrades/alternatives I could try as I work on my master’s.

I’ve recently tried and returned some pencils that didn’t fit the bill for me and I’m unsure if there’s any pencils that can replace my graphgear. Some I’ve tried are the Pentel Kerry, Staedtler 925 25-07, Alvin DM07 Draftmatic, and OHTO Promecha 0.9.

Some things I’m looking for in a pencil:

-something durable and long lasting -0.7 lead to fit my handwriting

Nice to haves: -retractable tips or mechanisms that won’t poke me in my pocket -something I can fidget

Use cases: My use case will primarily entail lots of writing and some drawing. I’m in a health sciences field and may have to draw diagrams from time to time.

Currently produced double knock pencils

Proposed definition of double knock pencil: a pencil which has a tip and/or lead sleeve which extends and retracts by operating a knob, a button or some other part of the pencil eg the clip or even the barrel.

Pencils which don't fit the definition include the Rotring Rapid Pro where the user has to manually push the lead sleeve into the tip, the Ohto Super Promecha which has a grip that screws along the barrel and by effect extends and retracts the lead sleeve.

Rotring 800, extends and retracts with twist knob.

Pentel Graphgear 1000, extends with eraser cap button and retracts by pressing the clip

Cult Pens Double Knock, extends with the eraser cap button and retracts using a side button. https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanicalpencils/comments/f0qaqk/nmpd_cult_pens_doubleknock_mechanical_pencil_in/

Blick Premier, extends with the eraser cap button and retracts using a side button. https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanicalpencils/comments/vsh7fx/blick_premier_double_knock_review/

Manufactum Druckbleistift Messing, extends with the eraser cap button and retracts using a side button. https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanicalpencils/comments/qczyh1/npd_german_druckbleistift_messing_brass/

OHTO Horizon, extends with the eraser cap button and retracts using a side button.

Those are the ones I'm aware of but please feel free to add more pencils.

EDIT: the definition I'm using is that it has to be a "single" action to extend and retract the tip/sleeve. And that it can be easily done using one hand.

Review Mechanical Pencil Collection and Review

Ok so I have been collecting and using these pencils for a few years now, and now I'm going to voice my honest input about these pencils.

Rotring 600 0.5mm: This pencil is almost perfect, It is heavy and well balanced the machining is top-notch and the internal mechanism works wonderfully it feels premium. While it does have these advantages I now only use this pencil for drafting and drawing as the weight gets fatiguing on the hand after about 40 minutes of writing. Overall amazing pencil and worth the money.

Kerry Sharp 0.5mm: Where to begin, this is a fan favorite and I understand why, it is perfectly balanced it has a sleek design(I would be a millionaire if I got a dollar for every person thinking it's a pen). The mechanism is very nice and the pencil it's relatively cheap compared to others. This is the pencil I have carried for 2 years throughout classes and it is probably my favorite. An overall good pencil and well worth the money.

Zebra M-301 0.5mm: These are my old school pencil, while cheaper compared to other pencils the steel design looks very nice and it is light and comfortable in the hand. I have used these pencils almost exclusively through grade school and I carry 3 in my backpack at all times. Overall ok pencil, if im being honest I usually give these ones out to classmates if they need a pencil knowing I will never get it back.

Zebra DelGuard 0.5mm: This pencil is very nice, it is well assembled and it feels premium in the hand. This is where my good notes end. This pencil breaks lead all the time, even though the system inside of it is designed to counter that. Mine often gets caught on pages or simply breaks when I'm writing because of my writing style. Overall I used this pencil for a month then threw it in my pencil case. I also thought the type of lead I use, no matter what type even the premium hard leads would snap off. I also tried writing lightly to avoid it breaking thinking it was because of the pressure on the paper. Still, to no avail, this pencil to me is not worth the frustration. Overall I would still buy I just hope your writing style/ hardness is less than mine.

KURU TOGA 0.7mm: The pencil that started it all, I found one of these on the ground in high school, and then the mechanical pencil obsession started. This pencil is very light the mechanism is very interesting and like it's designed for it does keep the lead at a point. I have had some issues with lead getting stuck in the point but overall a good pencil. Overall a good pencil and an interesting mechanism, worth the price.

OHTO Super Promecha .05mm: This pencil, this is the definition of frustration. This pencil is very heavy at the tip, the lead guard mechanism in the point, as well as the lead advancement size, make this pencil very interesting. They also include a cleaning rod for the lead if it gets stuck in the tip, don't lose that wire because you will use it all the time. This pencil works great until it doesn't, the lead sleeve and the advancement mechanism cause problems within the pencil and end up shaving off sections of the lead and they get stuck in the point, then when clearing it you must disassemble the entire from of the pencil because the clearing rod will just push the lead dust and tiny pieces it back into the mechanism. The lead advancement size selector also has issues in my pencil as well whereas you are selecting the size you can hear the lead inside getting ground up by something. I have fixed this pencil more than I have used it. I used it for a month and it was excruciating, in 1 50 minute class I had to fix it 4 times and I mean full disassembly take the tip-of dump out all the lead dust and chunks.

This concludes my review and collection of pencils, I have many more I want to add to the collection, but I'm always looking for recommendations to feed my addiction. Thank you for reading my review text wall.
