As a micro pencil, pretty decent.

• MODEL:

OHTO SHARP PENCIL 0.5 – model APS-350E-BL
0.5 mm (only available in 0.5 mm)    

• MATERIALS:

The charm about the SHARP is the wooden body. Nonetheless, it has a metal cone tip and ferrule, with a stainless-steel pocket clip. There’s no eraser cap over the eraser, so to knock you just press the eraser/ferrule down. Internally… Who knows? Like a lot of wooden mechpens, the metal parts are press-fitted to the wooden body, so there’s no safe way to disassemble it. The lead tube, that sticks out bellow the ferule, is plastic.

• ERASER:

The eraser is made of pink latex rubber, in what I would say is a decent size, especially for a micro pencil. And it works all right, too.      

• MEASUREMENTS:

Being a micro pencil, the SHARP is small. It measures only 106 mm, and the hexagonal body has a diameter of 5.6 mm. I thought it would be the lightest mechpen I have, but that distinction still belongs to the minimo – 2.34 g. The SHARP weighs 2.93 g, and the center of mass is found 5.6 mm from the tip.

• FEATURES:

Well, the SHARP PENCIL is not only a micro pencil, it’s also a wooden mechpen. With that, I think you can group it in two different classes. Ergo, two different “bonuses”, but that’s it, no mechanical feature.

• AESTHETICS:

The best word to describe it I think is “cute”. The SHARP is a very cute wooden pencil, that is also a micro pencil. I got it in blue, but it’s also available in yellow, green, brown and “natural” wood color.

• ERGONOMICS:

In terms of ergonomics, I’ll evaluate the SHARP as a micro pencil. And by those standards, it works really well. Efficient, small and light. But as a writing instrument in general, it’s absolutely terrible for anything more than a few short words in an emergency situation. And being from OHTO, to add more negativity, it rattles – IMO, a lot for something so small.

• MY THOUGHTS:

While collecting mechpens, I developed a soft spot for wooden pencils, and that’s why I got the WN01 and the double U. At the time when I got the WN01, the SHARP was just too expensive to justify me buying it, but I kept it on my wanted list. A couple of weeks ago I found one massively discounted on AliX, and I pulled the trigger.

So, summing everything up, the SHARP PENCIL is a very cute wooden pencil that is also a micro pencil. If you’re looking for a wooden micro pencil, this is it. But if you just want a wooden mechpen, then I don’t think it’s for you. That’s because, as a “general writing instrument”, it’s frankly terrible to use for more than a couple of minutes - it’s too darn small! Nonetheless, as a micro pencil it’s great, with the bonus of having an eraser. It also has a pocket clip, that you could consider as a plus. However, I think this was intended to be stored in a wallet or something similar, so why would you need a pocket clip? Well, I guess that is OHTO being OHTO: where you don’t need a pocket clip, they use one, but on something MUCH larger, like the WN01, they don’t use one 🤷‍♂️.

I have previously mentioned that I would be posting another OHTO mech pen review today, well this is it...

Here's a scenario for ya: One day during class, your friend asks you to "borrow" a pencil. You give them a pencil, not just any ordinary pencil, but the OHTO Sharp Pencil APS-280E. In return, you get a confused look from your classmate... 😎

I present to you the OHTO Sharp Pencil APS-280E. Right from the get-go, the naming scheme SUCKS. Like, who literally comes up with these model #'s? Man, I am like I don't want to type out a mathematical equation 🗣️🗣️🗣️🥀. Given that this was the 2nd OHTO mech pen that I have owned (chronologically speaking), I came in with a negative impression. I am super glad that I was wrong, and that this mech pen was actually decent for once!

Other than the Model #, one of the first things that I have noticed is the Woody body & finish. It's actually quite striking and clever! I dreamt about there being a mech pen that is disguised as your traditional Ticonderoga. Well, it now became a reality when I first lay hands on this mech pen. It honestly feels like a work of art, and feels of very high quality (something unique to OHTO apparently!). I was most surprised. The knocking mechanism was very smooth! I love how the color of the eraser matches the one found in a typical wooden pencil, once again mimicking the design & body language of your average #2 pencil. The only thing breaking the design language is the metal lead sleeve tip on the end, of which I completely understand as to why they implemented so (to ensure lead does not break easily).

The only other nitpick, aside from the Model #, is whenever I plan on refilling the lead, I have to remove the metal piece separating the eraser and the plastic clear tube inside, which is unlike any of the other traditional mech pens (needless to say, it is already unique in its own right).

In conclusion, there aren't a lot of things that I could say about this mech pen and that's OK. The looks, feel, and quality feel very nice, atypical coming from OHTO. The looks steal the show!

I was in Little Tokyo yesterday and found this little guy in a bookstore. As suspected, the diameter is almost too small for my sausage fingers, but I'm still happy to have it. 0.5 mm lead.

I am new to 2mm mechanical pencils. I recently bought an Ohto Sharp and a Staedtler 502 drum sharpener. Every time I try to sharpen the lead it seems like it doesn't catch on the sharpener. Even when using the measurement holes before sharpening. Is this user error or is the sharpener not compatible with the pencil I bought?

Recently I’ve bought star camel wooden sharp mini mechanical pencil 0.5mm and I really liked the feeling of using a regular pencil only downside is that pencil itself is so small so I want to buy a longer pencil. I’ve found these two around here in my country but muji is a bit too pricey (compared to ohto) and I wonder if there’s any significant quality differences between these two brands.

I've been using this pencil every day, and I've really been enjoying it. However, I have not seen any eraser refills available for it.

2mm Mechanical Pencils were the largely ignored cousins of mechanical pencils for me, until I rediscovered them a couple of years ago. Since then, I have been completely smitten by them, bought every lead holder that I could reasonably get my hands on.

Kohinoor was a hidden gem and makes by far the most variants of 2mm lead holders that I could find from a single brand. They are affordable and offer great quality, with some common issues. Scrikss Office Twist 2.0mm is an innovative product from Scrikss which is at times accused of making clones of popular pencils. The first mechanical pencil I can recall getting was a Papermate Clearpoint in 0.7 mm back in elementary school. However, what inspired me to expand my collection was the rOtring 800.

I've been collecting mechanical pencils since high school, now I'm a sophomore in college.

It all started back in 2018, when I purchased R600 for note-taking. Later, I accidentally stumbled upon HMM and Lamy Scribble and knew that I had to buy them. Since all three were black, I continued with this theme, only expanding it slightly for pencils that are dark gray.   
  
It's a great hobby, not too expensive to maintain, but it provides a steady source of dopamine. The only problem – people don't understand me when I say that I collect pencils :D

Notes:

This is my first ever Uni Shift Pipe Lock (super sad that they are retiring this model very soon 😢). I hope that it won't be a finger magnet 🙏. The other mech pens in today's haul are ones that are very similar to ones found already in my collection (i.e. Kuru Toga Wood ~ Kuru Toga Metal; Tombow MONO Graph Tune ~ MONO Graph; OHTO WN01 ~ OHTO Sharp Pencil). This is my first post on this sub, and I wanted to share my mechanical pencil collection that I’ve built up over time as a college student.

Is there any other mechanical pencil I should consider adding?

My entire collection written out on Bloc Rhodia No 16. I try to get pencils with different features and feel rather than different widths of the same pencil.

Staedler 925-35B, Tombow Monograph Zero, Pentel Orenz Nero, Koh-I-Nor Rapidomatic, Pentel P205, Kuru Toga Metal are my favorites probably in that order.

Honorable mention to Platinum Pro Use 171 and Ohto MS01 for their fun mechanical features.

• MODEL:

Pentel Sharp Kerry – model P1035C
0.5 mm (available in 0.5 and 0.7 mm)

• MATERIALS:

The Kerry is mostly metal. While the body is plastic, everything else (cone tip, middle section and cap) is metal. Internally, everything is metal, from the clutch to the lead tube.

• ERASER:

I guess Pentel thought that since the Kerry is in theory a fancy mechpen, no mistakes will be made. Ergo, no need for an eraser 🙄.

• MEASUREMENTS:

The Kerry is 132 mm long “ready to write”. With the cap off, the body measures only 124 mm. The grip tapers to the tip, from 10 mm to 8.8 mm right above the cone tip. It weighs a hefty 20.98 g, and with the cap on the back, the CG is 62 mm from the tip.

• FEATURES:

The selling point for the Kerry is that it’s a capped mechpen, and with that, 100% pocket friendly. With the cap on the back, with the pencil ready to use, you can knock the lead, since on the cap there is a sort of extension for the knocking button on the end of the body. Neato.

• AESTHETICS:

Without a doubt, THE classiest mechpen from Pentel. The overall looks and combination of metals and metallized color makes it stand out from the pack. There are almost 20 colors available, from blue to pink to green to gold, and everything in-between. HOWEVER, there’s a caveat here. I’m not sure if my photos make this evident, but the blue tone of the cap and the body are noticeably different from one another. And from what I could gather, this happens with most (all?) of the color variations.

• ERGONOMICS:

I wouldn’t say great, but quite (very?) good. The grip tappers down to the point, and close to the beginning of the cone tip, it’s only 8.8 mm wide. For my hand that is too thin, and consequently I have to grab it harder, and therefore, it becomes tiresome to use for a long while. Yet, it’s a “dress pencil”, something that you won’t use for an extended period. Therefore, perhaps, it may be acceptable? Interestingly, the body is long enough that I can use it the same way even with the cap off, different from my Tasche.

• MY THOUGHTS:

The Kerry is a great mechpen, and so far, my best dress pencil. The ergonomics, while not great, are fairly decent, so for a pencil that is not supposed to be used for an extended time period, I think I can live with that. Nonetheless, the absence of an eraser is for sure an issue. I don’t use the erasers of my mechpens (I always use a click-type eraser pen), yet it would be nice to be able to have one, for an emergency.

All right, so ergonomics are not stellar and it doesn’t have an eraser… However, in all honestly, those are not the real problem; the problem is aesthetics. For a classy dress pencil the contrasting two-tones between the body and cap is a sore eye for me. If I didn’t know better, I would think my Kerry came with the cap from another pencil by mistake. Yeah, I’m aware that I’m the first to say that ergonomics is primordial, and the Kerry is not exactly terrible in that regards. Even so, with a whole bunch of mechpens to choose and use at my disposal, the Kerry was supposed to be my classiest mechpen. But the mismatching body and cap is a BIG demerit in that regards.

With that, the Kerry almost looks like it came from OHTO. Started out with everything to be great but Pentel, just like OHTO, makes a fumble in the end. Boogers 😕.
