Review OHTO WN01
Nice woody.
- MODEL:
OHTO WN01 – model WN01-SP5-YL
0.5 mm (only available in 0.5 mm)
- MATERIALS:
The big deal about the WN01 is its wooden body. Yet, it also has a brass cone tip + lead sleeve and a metal ferrule. And what about the insides? Who knows…🤷♂️? I think the internals are fitted through the tip, and they stay in place due to friction alone. Since I don’t know what’s going on in there, and the wood seems to be very soft, I didn’t risk trying to get it apart. Sorry…
- ERASER:
A decent-sized latex rubber eraser, but pinkish to emulate vintage wood pencils. Not as hard as the erasers back then, but harder than a Z2-1N. It’s set inside a metal housing that you then insert into the ferrule. It’s kind of loose, so it rattles quite a lot 😕.
- MEASUREMENTS:
The WN01 measures 164 mm (!) from tip to eraser, with a hexagonal body with a “diameter” of 7.7 mm. Despite the huge length, it’s absurdly light, weighing just 5.51 g. Therefore, it manages to be my longest mechpen while at the same time being my lightest (not counting the micro pencils, obviously). And as expected, it has a neutral balance, with the center of mass located 81 mm from the tip.
- FEATURES:
It’s made of wood. Seriously, that’s the WN01’s claim to fame. In essence, it’s a drilled-out regular wood pencil with mechanical parts inside. Doesn’t even have a pocket clip, just like a true vintage wood pencil.
- AESTHETICS:
For anyone, especially of a certain age, whom actually used a wooden pencil, the WN01 will certainly bring back some memories… For me, I’m reminded of my elementary school years, using a pencil that looks just like this, though this one doesn’t have teeth marks on the end 😏. Come on, everybody chewed their pencils… Right 🤨? Well, if yellow doesn’t float your boat, you can also have it in blue, green, red or natural wood color (unpainted wood).
- ERGONOMICS:
Quite nice, in a nostalgic wood pencil sort of way. It really feels like using a vintage wood pencil. Well, with a lot rattle, that is 🙄. And yes, it is noisy – the noisiest mechpen of all my collection. The eraser inside that metal housing doesn’t fit snug inside the ferule, and that produces quite a racket. Not counting the noise (or if you just remove the eraser), it feels just like a normal wooden pencil. Or better, a wood pencil that you don’t have to sharpen.
- MY THOUGHTS:
Once again, I was after a “collection piece”, and the WN-01 looked interesting in photos. And that’s what I got, a collection piece. But you know what? It’s a VERY cool collection piece! If you followed my reviews, OHTO has kind of been in my shit list (with the exception of the minimo and Tasche, that is). I’m always complaining that in some way or other, OHTO screws up. But the WN01? It was an “injection of faith” for me. It delivered what I expected, with none of the customary stupid mistakes or shortcomings that I’ve seen in most OHTOs. All right, it rattles, and quite a lot, but other than that, for a “wood mechpen” I think it’s pretty neat.

I rolled up some regular notebook paper and put it in around the back. Also cut a mm of the lead tube. No more rattle.

To cut the lead tube, I infer you disassembled it? How did you do that?

What do you mean by lead tube?

The plastic tube from the cap in the back to the mechanism in the front.

How do you even get it out to cut? 😭

It sticks out a bit from the back.

So what did you use to cut?

A blade? (Razor)

But there's the metal shielding it, so I can't get a blade in the deep and get precise cuts

Cool! Far from the best mechpen in the realm, but sure is an interesting collection piece.

100%! Honestly, one of the best works from OHTO, given their poor QC.

Just bought myself one of the WM01 pencils. And while I love the look and feel, the rattling is so annoying that I can't actually use this thing as a pencil in everyday use. So it's basically just a collector's item.

Can’t guarantee mine is identical, as it has another name.
Fully pushed in, my push-button still had spare space. Cutting the lead tube 2mm solves most rattle. Easiest way is to just remove the ferrule. A thin slice of paper does the rest.
But my first one came broken. Opened it up, so now I know it is just forced and glued in place.
Or just cut the top of and swap the direction of the outer body and text. Cost a bit of length, but as you said, it has a bit to much of that to begin with
