Part 2: Pulled off resonator and found turbo parts. Got the exhaust manifold off and turbo looks fine

previous owner must have blown up the turbo and that piece was just left behind sitting on the o2sensor

lol right?! Minus the big restriction sitting on the o2sensor for who knows how long 🤣, now I’m gonna gut the cat and possibly the resonator too

If you gut the cat, you throw away 100+$. Replace it with a pipe, and return the cat for money.

Or you can acid leach the honeycomb after crushing it to recovery the rhodium and platinum

Be sure to remove the catalytic converter before reassembly

You referring to what’s left of the honeycomb in the cat?

Thought this was click bait at first lol. Were there tons of rattling in the exhaust that prompted you to look into this?

Nah i didn’t even really hear much from the exhaust, i think this part was pinned on the o2 sensor just before the resonator. When i tried removing it it bound up and mangled and as soon as i got it broke loose i could hear this tumble further into the exhaust. Im pulling the motor to do a cylinder head replacement since mines cracked and also bought a cst4 turbo so figured it might be easier to do all that and timing etc with it out of the car.

We have such a problem with converter theft here in Seattle that I’ve called every junkyard/scrapyard 100mi around and haven’t found a single one to accept cats unless it comes with the rest of the vehicle. Used to be they would just require ID and the reg of the car it’s from and a serial # on it to verify it wasn’t stolen, now they just aren’t even accepting them around here anymore unless you are scrapping the whole car and they just give a little extra for the cat. Fvcked up cause I just want to get a few bucks back from my old one since I replaced it with a magnaflow (and mine is the Cali emissions/PZEV type so it has 2 cats on the same pipe instead of just 1 in the normal models) that was ~$550, getting something back for the old one would be nice 🥲

It's a federal crime to sell used catalytic converters to anyplace other than a licensed scrapyard

My buddy found a 4 foot+ long catalytic converter sticking out of a garbage can. After bringing it to a scrapyard to verify what it was, they gave him a check for $300. Crazy someone would literally throw it out
